Stay in the short grass
The crabgrass is brutal. Thick. And darn near impossible to hit from. Other day that it was well paced.
Have not played in a couple years and was pleased by conditions. Nice to be able to book on golf now !
Hackin' at the Rack
Before you come to play here you have to remember that you are playing a PUBLIC course and could be subject to a 5 hour round. Nothing can be done. The rangers are not coming out to hurry people along. Right now, the course is in the best shape since I began playing here 20 years ago. They actually closed the West course down for most of the winter and put up temps for the rest of it to let the course recover from the season which they've never done. They've taken down a bunch of trees to open it up, put actual golf sand in the bunkers, new mats on the range. The greens aren't perfect(remember it's a PUBLIC course) but for the most part, they hold and roll just fine. The West gets the most play but the East while somewhat less challenging is a solid course also.
Go Elsewhere
Tamarack an experiment in how to run a golf course. This is a county course that has never been dealt with properly in the last 20 years. Played Friday after noon around 3 starter left for the day so no since booking a time. One guy was behind the counter who was clueless. The course was soaked with no restrictions so the carts turned it into an ATV track. It’s obvious this has been going on for days. The crabgrass was all over the place and the fairways only fair. Best way to use Tamarack goto the driving range and play elsewhere.
Longest Round Of My Life
Picked this course because its centrally located and I was meeting up with friends that live all over the state. The course itself is not all that bad. Interesting layout, challenging holes, and it's in pretty good condition.
Now the bad. We also picked this course because it had a driving range. Of course it was closed so they could mow it. Would think they could find a less busy time to maintain the driving range than 9:30 in the morning when you have 500 golfers trying to get out and play.
Now the worst part. On Thursdays they have a womans group go out. They must have reserved tre times every week on this day. They slowed the entire course down. They were hitting the ball no more than 25 yards each swing. It looked more like croquet than golf. We hit the turn after 3 hours. The entire round took 5 and half hours to complete. Lesson learned, never again. Stay away from this place on Thursday total disaster.
Thanksgiving Day Golf
Setting out to play Tamarack West on Thanksgiving Day was a perfect idea, but my 11:50am Hot Deal got changed to an 11:30am start time when a nice guy from the course called me to say that their last tee time was going to 11:30. 20 minutes earlier was no problem for me since he was honoring the Hot Deal price. It only took me 30 minutes to get there and there were only a few cars in the parking lot and guys coming off of the course as I walked to the clubhouse.
I got a key and headed out to the West Course. The only issue I saw the whole day were leaves on the greens. I can deal with the leaves in the Fall in the rough and even blowing on the fairways, but when you hit a shot onto the green and can’t see your ball and start to doubt your shots it gets frustrating.
Love the layout and with nobody on the course I zipped around in 2 hours 15 minutes and didn’t see anyone until the foursome on the 12th tee who let me play through.
Now I booked the West because I had thought I never played it, but had 3 years ago, so I need to get back and play the East Course. They will see me again soon and I may have found a new regular course to put in the rotation.
The West
I have not played here in many years because of the condition of the course. But, it is in much better shape now. Greens were good, but not too fast. Some crabgrass off the fairways. It seems to be improving. The west is very challenging, you must be long and straight.
