Nestled in the hills of Scotts Mountain, Harkers Hollow Golf Club was carved from a sloping hillside, giving it a challenging terrain with plenty of elevation changes. Opened in 1929, the golf course has a classic layout designed by Robert White, the first president of the PGA of America. Although it is a seemingly mild 6,551 yards from the back tees, the course plays much longer and harder thanks to the undulating terrain. The layout does offer a few lengthy holes as well as some interesting par 3s. The greens are small and fast with breaks ranging from subtle to dramatic. There is hardly any water but the Lopatcong Creek does run the entire length of the golf course and requires the occasional carry. The par-3 fifth hole is the club's signature. It is particularly notable for its scenery, which is why it has served as the backdrop for many weddings.

Nice Layout

Some holes are challenging; overall the course is fair. Some people walk but take a cart.

Solid Robert White Course

Course is laid out well over the rolling hillside. The layout weaves in multiple directions up and down the hillside on the front 9 and winds it’s way in a zig zag manner up to the highest point of the property on the back 9.

The greens appear all original and have both subtle and larger undulations. Course conditions were superb.

The only negative is the round was extremely slow, it was by far my longest round of the year and the course needed a Marshall

Complete 180

Let me start by saying I worked the Pro Shop part time for about a year approximately 8 years ago during the previous ownership. It was rough when I worked there and got far worse by the time it sold, Goat Trail worse.

I gave it a chance again about 2 or 3 years ago and it was still rough. You could see the new owners were starting to make improvements but it wasn't much better from the previous time I played. The fairways were bare, the greens were bad and even the tee boxes were rough and the creek was overgrown.

Fast forward 2-3 years and I found a complete 180 degree turnaround. The fairways are lush, the greens and tee boxes are fine, the creek was starting to get a little overgrown but the course ranger told me they were diverting some manpower to get there pool open (nice pool by the way) and the creek would be tended to soon.

As far as pace of play we just had a slow group ahead of us and the ranger got them moving after a few holes. A bonus is they now have an on course snack and beverage cart driving around.

I will definitely play again and I recommend you try it again if you haven't been there in awhile.

Enjoyable track

I'd seen positive stories about Harkers Hollow's revitalization and wanted to check it out. Fun round, the course is scenic, in nice condition and challenging, especially for the first time playing there.

Small greens require plenty of precision on your approaches and rolling terrain/elevation changes on many holes means you will often have tricky lies above/below your feet.

HH is a good value, less pricey than nearby Architects. The proximity of the two courses does offer a potential 36-hole HH/Architects golf day for those who might make the somewhat lengthy trip out from NY/Northern NJ metro area.

It’s a lot better than previous years.

Looks better than last year. New owners must be doing things right. Will come back soon.
