About
Sunset Valley Golf Course is consistently ranked as one of the best public courses in New Jersey. It is one of four golf courses in the Morris County Parks system and it's considered the toughest. Located in Pompton Plains, the course is nestled in a wooded valley. It has a dramatic topography that provides plenty of ups and downs throughout the golf course. Golfers can expect a variety of elevation changes as well as a few blind shots and forced carries. Strategically placed bunkers come into play along the fast, undulating greens and mature trees line the rolling fairways. Water hazards come into play on a few holes too. Sunset Valley Golf Course's final three holes present one of the area's toughest finishes. The trio begins with the uphill par-5 16th and then finishes with two long par 4s.

Golfer Reviews
Great municipal course
Liked very much the layout and the corse conditions. greens especially were in a quite good shape.
Frustrating pace of play
First time here, really enjoyed the layout. Pace of play was an issue, and we did not see a ranger until the 15th hole. Even then, he seemed content with the situation. Back 9 took 3 hours, 5hr 15 minute round overall.
Course was in very good condition, greens were better than most public courses in the area.
I would go back, but I will try to find a less crowded time.
Good day gone bad on the back nine
We love this facility but we were disappointed when we got teamed up on the back nine with new players and the three in front of us also slowed down the course. We could not finish our round of 18
Nice public access venue
Challenging par 70 layout; well kept for a public course; pace of play quite tolerable
Extremely delay on the weekend, too many books
Book too many tee times, extremely delay
They should not take too many tee times.
Fantastic track
I am embarrassed that it took me so long to discover this gem. My father in law had told me about Sunset Valley yet I had never made it out. Man I am glad I finally did.
Great staff at the start, maintenance crew was kind enough to back out of the way (I was out at 6am and walking so they were changing the hole locations when I was approaching the greens)
The only rub I had was 16, 17, 18. It was described to me as some of the best finishing holes in NJ -- maybe so -- but each fairway was soaked. Totally saturated ...
All in all, a great place. I hope to get back soon.
Pin placements can make this course very challenging
Overall, liked course quite a bit. Since Billy Caspar started managing seems the overall upkeep of the course has improved. Love that they offer 5:30 a.m. tee times. Course requires you to shape shots in certain situations which is fun. Nice variety of very challenging homes and holes that provide a little reprieve. Green complexes can be very severe, depending on pin placement. In some cases if you do not hole put you can go 7-10 feet by hole. Pretty penal at times. A lot of potential to slow down play, but overall was not an issue on the day.
Nice afternoon
Pace of play was slow. I was paired up with 3 other golfers that knew each other but we had a nice day. The course had a cart shortage, waiting for players to come off 18 to get new groups out. Conditions were great. Greens were slower than one would expect. The blue tees were playing up, but we played from the white. Overall it was a great day
Best county course in area !
I play here 10-15 times a year for last 7 years course has never been in better shape. Some tee boxes still need some work overall course is good shape. great layout, with tough greens. Remember this is a nice county course close to nyc and everything so yes its gonna be busy like any other course in the area thats worth playing so if u dont want a long round tee off early.
To long of a round
Course was good but it shouldn't take 4 hr and 50 minutes to play. The rangers need to enforce the times!!!! Thats the most important job they have and they can't even do that!!!!
Good County Course
It is apparent that resources have been devoted to upgrading course conditions, of course it is early in the season and conditions should be good. I have played here before when tee boxes were dirt and the greens were rock hard so this is an improvement . It is a hilly course, walking is an endurance test, better to ride. There was a heavy rain the night before and the sand traps were compacted, but unlike some county courses there was sand in them. The staff was friendly. Golf now added some charges from the price on the website when I checked out.
great improvements
I have played this course many times in the past but not in the last 12 years and always liked the layout. Since I last played several of the holes have been reconfigured and new tee boxes and greens have been added. All of the improvements are fantastic! The condition is pretty amazing for a public course. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone looking for a well maintained and challenging course and with a greens fee of $37 is a very good value. I booked the tee time the day before with golf advisor and we teed off at exactly the time that was booked.
Beautiful Golf Course
The starter and bag attendant were absolute gentlemen . Thank you and I will be back.
surprised
Course was a little wet - cartpath only - it played well - not terribly long but presented some interesting challenges - the one thing I didn't like was booking through golf now for 51 bucks only to find when I printed out the confirmation that it was the walking price - had to pay another 15 bucks for cart - not cool
horrible pin position
the front 9 had the worst pin positions. we are not pros we are trying to have a good time. the club said not to use golf now, that they are sneaky.
2014 Season begins at Sunset Valley
The start of 2014 season brings new management to the Morris County golf courses. The management will run and maintain the courses for the season. The website is still under construction at this time and employees are learning the new procedures.
Playing the course this time of season was in average condition considering this past winter. Played as a single and finished 18 in 2 1/2 hrs
