Sunset Valley Golf Course
About
Sunset Valley Golf Course is consistently ranked as one of the best public courses in New Jersey. It is one of four golf courses in the Morris County Parks system and it's considered the toughest. Located in Pompton Plains, the course is nestled in a wooded valley. It has a dramatic topography that provides plenty of ups and downs throughout the golf course. Golfers can expect a variety of elevation changes as well as a few blind shots and forced carries. Strategically placed bunkers come into play along the fast, undulating greens and mature trees line the rolling fairways. Water hazards come into play on a few holes too. Sunset Valley Golf Course's final three holes present one of the area's toughest finishes. The trio begins with the uphill par-5 16th and then finishes with two long par 4s.

Huge greens
This course has the biggest greens you will find around. A hilly course but the fairways give you a good lie. Very challenging with some blind shots. It helps to play with someone you has played the course before.
Will play again for sure.
One of my favorite courses
cant say enough good things about this course. Unique layout, some challenging greens. Great for walking if you want to get some exercise. Tough finishing holes 16-18. Nice staff. Looking forward to playing there again soon.
Good course but tough to walk
Had a great time but I wish someone had told us that it's a lot of up and down walking , would have preferred to take a cart.
Good but challenging
Nice layout, challenging course with tough greens. Tee ground could be in a better shape. Paid $67 with cart on a Sat which seemed a bit on the pricey side but would like to come back here again.
Sunset Valley
Course overall was in good shape although some of the greens were in rough condition and the fairways were a little thin, but overall in good shape.
My biggest objection was after reserving it turned out that carts were not included. I think this should have been made clearer from the start. They charged us an extra $18 per person for the two of us.
Great course but slow play
Course not terribly too long although back 9 a little challenging for walkers.
Frustrated by slow poor; it would appear that the ranger had no effect on the pace but he's a nice guy.
Middle or back tees?
I was so happy that I played this course twice on consecutive days. Both tee off times around 9:40 am on Saturday and Sunday.
First day - played from the middle tees and found my target golf skills need work. Firm fairways and many narrow with small landing areas. Wide and well placed bunkers. Still too many hackers not racking or fixing ball marks. Courses which get a lot of play must have players that take care of their track.
Greens were hard to read and lightening fast. Some pin placements are down right illegal. The toughness of greens slows down the play considerably.
Second day. Played from the back tees. World of difference for me- much more fun and scored significantly better. If you like to walk which I do, a strenuous but enjoy hike. Last three holes are the best in NJ public courses.
Nice course
The course is in a nice setting nestled up against a ridge in the valley. There is not a driving range so the only warm up you can do is on the practice green, however chipping is allowed. The course is a little tight in places so accuracy off the tee is a key. Water comes into play on a few holes and there are some large elevations drops from tee to fairway. The course was full but the pace of play moved along fairly well with minimal waiting. The greens were aerated and quite bumpy, would like to play this course again when the greens are rolling true. The greens are also quite large with some undulations.
Airated greens and heft price
A Very nice course but greens were airated. We were not notified and still paid full price for an extremely annoying putting round.
I'll be back
Fun course with great layout and crazy undulating massive greens....only issue was greens were aerated on Monday 8/18. Tough course to walk but well worth the effort to enjoy the course and surrounding scenery.
Golfnow very nice !!
I enjoyed the course and the care of persons. Was very good .....
Great municipal course
Liked very much the layout and the corse conditions. greens especially were in a quite good shape.
Frustrating pace of play
First time here, really enjoyed the layout. Pace of play was an issue, and we did not see a ranger until the 15th hole. Even then, he seemed content with the situation. Back 9 took 3 hours, 5hr 15 minute round overall.
Course was in very good condition, greens were better than most public courses in the area.
I would go back, but I will try to find a less crowded time.
Good day gone bad on the back nine
We love this facility but we were disappointed when we got teamed up on the back nine with new players and the three in front of us also slowed down the course. We could not finish our round of 18
Nice public access venue
Challenging par 70 layout; well kept for a public course; pace of play quite tolerable
Extremely delay on the weekend, too many books
Book too many tee times, extremely delay
They should not take too many tee times.
Fantastic track
I am embarrassed that it took me so long to discover this gem. My father in law had told me about Sunset Valley yet I had never made it out. Man I am glad I finally did.
Great staff at the start, maintenance crew was kind enough to back out of the way (I was out at 6am and walking so they were changing the hole locations when I was approaching the greens)
The only rub I had was 16, 17, 18. It was described to me as some of the best finishing holes in NJ -- maybe so -- but each fairway was soaked. Totally saturated ...
All in all, a great place. I hope to get back soon.
Pin placements can make this course very challenging
Overall, liked course quite a bit. Since Billy Caspar started managing seems the overall upkeep of the course has improved. Love that they offer 5:30 a.m. tee times. Course requires you to shape shots in certain situations which is fun. Nice variety of very challenging homes and holes that provide a little reprieve. Green complexes can be very severe, depending on pin placement. In some cases if you do not hole put you can go 7-10 feet by hole. Pretty penal at times. A lot of potential to slow down play, but overall was not an issue on the day.
Nice afternoon
Pace of play was slow. I was paired up with 3 other golfers that knew each other but we had a nice day. The course had a cart shortage, waiting for players to come off 18 to get new groups out. Conditions were great. Greens were slower than one would expect. The blue tees were playing up, but we played from the white. Overall it was a great day
