Open fairways and some challenging multitiered greens
I played the West and East a few days apart from each other and I'm having a hard time deciding which I liked better. The West course is a little more challenging with tee placement and a little tighter of a course while the East you can get a away some big misses off the tee if you strategically choose the widest part of the fairway. Since the East fairways are more open, they increase difficulty by making a lot of the greens have 2 tiers so your approach shot needs to be accurate for the proper tier that the pin is placed on. If you hit the wrong part of the green, you can easily 3 putt on the trickier greens. If you struggle with your tee shots, I would suggest playing the East course with most holes giving you plenty of room for a miss without punishing you too bad.
Course conditions were surprising
Mercer Oaks is a favorite, worth-a-drive destination, which probably made the conditions even more surprising. The rough features considerable crabgrass, the bunkers need tending (some are rock and stone-strewn), and the ball washers were mostly dry. The staff was great, as always, and the course layout engaging, as always. I am sure the wet weather has been a problem, so hopefully when (if) conditions improve, so will the course.
Excellent County Golf Course
Mercer Oaks East & West are a true delight.
With many of the area courses closing or going private in high tax NJ , it is a breath of fresh air that this facility operated by Mercer County offers a top notch facility top to bottom for all golfers. Course conditions are always good and facilities are good and priced fairly.
Course in Good Shape
The layout is fun. The greens are challenging and well guarded. Tee boxes, fairways and greens all in good shape. Rough has some thin areas. People are really bad at fixing their ball marks on the greens.
Solid round on MercerOaks east.
The fairways were in good shape. The greens were about average speed but smooth and true. Plenty of rain recently helped. The areas just off the fairway are hit and miss. Some as expected and some barren with gravel. The bunkers need work. Like most public courses, bunker maintenance suffers. The middle of the bunkers have deep sand and the edges have some erosion and there is gravel to contend with and the grass edges are have been ignored this year. They should level the surface of all bunkers to reduce the required maintenance.
Overall a well above average public course that I have played many times. A fair price for the round at one of the best public courses around.
Good course in central NJ
Mercer oaks east is a challenging links style course. Course was in good shape considering heat of the day,88, and high traffic .Gripes: almost no rakes on traps, no water stations, and players were not repairing divots . 4 hour 45 minute round on a Thursday.
SBEagles
First time playing the East course, links style. Course in good shape, a handful of the greens had ball marks that I can’t figure out why people just don’t repair their marks. Some of the tee boxes could be in better shape but overall very nice conditions. Only complaint is no water on the course to drink, although cart girl was great and came around, should bring back the water coolers, Covid is gone. I would play again but prefer the west for its uniqueness and different terrain
great day for golf
Played a fairly quick round with a couple of short showers late in the round. Course is in good shape. would have liked fewer stones in the few bunkers I did hit into.
Most underrated course in area
Beautiful links style layout. Great shape, fun course to play. Definitely a hidden gem in the central NJ/Philly area if it’s at the right price.
