Regulation Eighteen at Smithtown Landing Golf Club

About
Smithtown Landing Golf Club offers both an 18-hole regulation course and a nine-hole executive course. The courses are open to the public on weekdays and to Smithtown residents on the weekends. The Regulation Course has a surprisingly tough layout with subtle but tricky contours throughout that cause some challenging lies. Mature trees line the fairways, making accuracy a necessity and there are also several strategically placed bunkers lurking along the greensides. At 6,114 yards from the back tees, it's a golf course that requires strategy over length, beginning with the first hole. This dogleg right par 4 will force you to carefully think about the placement off the tee. In addition to the two golf courses, Smithtown Landing also has two practice greens with surrounding short game areas and a driving range.

Poor Pace of Play.
Tee times weren’t spread out at all. Too many groups sent out too close to each other. 8 minute intervals lead to pulling up on group in front, every hole, still yet to tee off. Meaning 10-15 min waits each hole.
Great to play
Course was in great shape tees to greens. Pace of play not too bad for a Friday afternoon. Tough walking course as there are a lot of elevation changes. Only complaint- many of the garbage cans on the course were overflowing and needed to be changed. Other than that- excellent!
Worst course so far on LI
Lets start with the positive(s),
Lots of elevation change, its a pretty challenging course. I don't use a range finder, and judging distances was certainly more challenging than the other courses in the bracket of $70-$100 (this was $75).
As it is a challenging course, the players they attract can be newer golfers and take more time, and booking groups as tight as they do leads to constant delays at every hole.
We booked a tee time around noon.
After progressing a couple holes, we waited for an average of about 10 minutes at each tee box, and then had the ranger come around to rush OUR group into going faster without even knowing what the hold up really is.
If the delays weren't enough to frustrate the group, the ranger certainly pushed it even further towards never booking that course again.
But we get it, people ahead might be new, the ranger might have pressure to speed people up with no idea who the problem is.. but
The cherry on top of it all... the disrespect of the maintenance worker was unbelievable. With a hose sprawled across the green while people were approaching the green and then continuing disrupting players while they putted ahead of us was something I myself have never seen anything like. Not to mention when that group was done, the worker stayed on the green for 10 minutes while we were waiting at the Par 3 Tee box. Seeing as they didnt have intentions to move and with a ranger likely making their way back around to pressure us again, we just tee'd off and missed the worker by about 10 feet.
The polite cart girl crew was the most respect the course showed us as a whole. Being quiet around tee boxes and greens, and being very patient.
As we finished 18, you'll have to lug all your stuff back about a quarter mile to the parking lot. We did it while thinking about that experience and that was the nail in that coffin.
I've never even wrote a review before, look at all this. Enough said. Dont waste a weekend of golf here. Or waste one weekend to re-appreciate your other preferred courses.
Hands down worst experience on Long Island
The course itself is a great challenge. Many elevation changes, and slopes designed to bring your ball into tough places. Greens were what you'd expect from one of the cheapest courses on LI.
Aside from the course, we had to constantly wait 10 minutes at the tee boxes since they overbook for the time it takes golfers to progress the course.
If waiting frustrates you, don't even bother continue reading.. we had the ranger driving around chirping us to pick up the pace when we can visibly see the group ahead still waiting at their tee box. So unecessary pressure to move took away from the game.
Then to put a cherry on top of never considering this course again, the maintenance staff had zero regard for golfers. In one unbelievable instance we watched the group ahead of us try and putt around a worker with a hose across the green. The video is uploaded to this review. You couldn't make it up. After the group in the video finished, the worker remained on the green in our way for at least another 5 minutes until we simply weren't going to deal with the ranger complaining to pick up the pace again. So we tee'd off and let the worker deal with their consequences. Luckily for them, we didn't hit them by about 10 feet.
Great Layout
I’ve been meaning to play this one and was glad I got to. Enjoyed the walk, the layout and the suprisingly fast greens. Good elevation changes as well. Pace of play was on and off but expected for a weekend holiday. Would play again
Fun day at Smithtown Landing
Lots of challenging holes . Putting greens were excellent.
Fairways could be slightly better but overall course was in nice shape. EXCELLENT STAFF.. Always courteous, friendly and trying to help!
19th Hole
I had an early afternoon tee time so I figured I’d have lunch at the 19th hole.
There were 2 people behind the bar and I sat at the bar for about 5 minutes before anyone asked me what I wanted. (1 person was tending to the cash drawer so I thought the other person would help me but that didn’t happen)
I had to order from an electronic kiosk and what came out did not look like the photo. It was what I ordered but the photo showed chips but none were on the plate. It just didn’t feel inviting or at all pleasant. I won’t be eating there again.
Phenomenal course, don’t expect to play on pace.
I’ve played at this course multiple times over many years. The course itself is a great layout. It provides a good challenge but never does it feel unfair. A lot of score-able holes. The course is always in amazing condition. The greens are pure. Nothing to complain about on that end. My biggest complaint with this place is the pace of play. We were a threesome and it took us 5 hours to play. The three of us shot mid 80s. The guys in front of us were slow as was the group ahead of them. No one enforces pace of play and it’s frustrating. If you are in a hurry and need to play a round in a decent amount of time. This isn’t the place for it. The tee times are 8 mins apart which is probably the biggest contributor to this issue. Great course, terrible pace of play. I play this on a deal time because time is money.
Stay away in afternoon
Tee off was approximately noon, extremely slow play, foursome in front did not care how long it took to play hole, quit after 5 hours and did not play hole 18. No rangers on course. Four par 3’s golf cart only which is normal, then four par 4’s cart path only, so basically 1/2 course cart part path only, just terrible. On hot days or older golfers not the place to play. Stay away, I will never go back, I thought it would be better after a three years not playing there again and would not recommend.
