Greens were perfect!!! Pace of play not so much
The course has a great layout and is very challenging from back tees..greens were in excellent condition and were very fast..only bad thing I can say about this course was the pace of play..we teed off about 1:15 and didn't finish til almost 6:30..this was my first round at this course and would def give it a go again
Not bad
Big problem is pace of play (Saturday). Nearly a 6 hour round and delayed start. But good course for manhattan proximity.
Latty 4th hole
On #4 if your putt is facing back towards the tee box it will break right from anywhere.. All Greens were dynamite!
Great Time
What a great day of golfing, the weather was perfect, the golf course was in great shape and the company was the best.
Remarkably overpriced
This course charges ~$75/round when it should be closer to $40 based on the quality. The condition was awful - uneven fairways and some of the most poorly kept rough I've ever seen. Around the greens, they have rugged dirt cart paths next to the actual cart paths (and those dirt paths are next to the green), which makes no sense at all. Moreover, there was no ranger in sight and we wound up with a five hour round thanks to several slow groups. As for the actual layout, it was OK - nothing special and no memorable holes. All in all, it's a basic course that doesn't do the fundamentals well at all.
It was better than the last time
The course was in better shape than the last time I played it but the round was way longer but it was a nice day
Poor Management
Just terrible. I used to play La Tourette when I called Staten Island home. Back in the late 90s it cost about $35 with a cart. At that price, it was fine. Fairly interesting layout (the front nine at least) and in good enough shape for the price.
I went back and played this past weekend for mostly nostalgia. When I heard about the price tag I figured they put in some improvements. Boy was I wrong. Back in the day, if you played in Spring, the course was in decent shape since the local hackers who drive their carts where they want and dont fix ball marks didnt have a chance to completely ruin the course yet. Not anymore.
Its like they gave up. The course is in terrible condition. For almost $80 per player (including one from Staten Island) you would think they had some money for upkeep. This has to be the most poorly managed course I have ever played.
The greens are horrendous. Like they have never been treated. Multi-colored and obviously diseased. One green was so damaged it shouldn't have been open. And it was obviously damaged by an employee as you can see the cut outs for when they change the pins in about 100 spots in circular lines.
They switched front and back here this year and the back nine is actually the more interesting nine now.
The tee boxes are mostly terrible. The sand traps are full of water. With the record rainfall we had last week this course's drainage just couldnt handle it and everywhere is soaked, not just low-lying areas. Elevated fairways were soaked. You would think there would be a cart path only rule to protect the course, or at least a 90 degree rule. Nope. We didnt see one ranger all day.
Fairways were even overgrown to the point where middle of the fairway felt like short rough. There were player-made cart paths around almost every green (where players are NOT supposed to drive). There were no signs for "NO CARTS" that are normally 70 yards away from greens so every player basically drives right up to the green completely ruining the course.
The sad part about LaTourette is that with proper management and some money for improvements, this could be a very good course. Improve the drainage, maintain the course better, add in some more traps. SOMETHING. Pretend to care about it.
Decent at best
Course was in bad condition. What else is new for nyc golf. Tee boxes were a mess. Greens were all inconsistent. Standing water everywhere on course including the sand traps. No cart girl/ranger on the course all day. Course was crowded with Sunday hackers. Pace was slow and tedious. The range they have is horrible they have stalls with these hard uneven carpet mats. You think for all the money they take in they would invest in some upgraded true strike mats. OK my rant is over do yourself a favor and drive a few miles in any direction and play somewhere outside of nyc
Good course
It's a good course..kinda short but fun..the staff is extremely friendly and the course was in very good shape considering the winter we just had..pace of play could have been much better if it wasn't for the guys in front of me getting sloshed and not having good etiquette ..I would play again
Flip Flop
They flipped the course around. The back9 is now the front9. You would think that golf now would have something on the website telling you that. No signs at the course letting you know where the 1st tee is. No signs on the counter. No mention of the change from the counter person. Smh
Course not ready for the season yet
Parking lot is awful, better be driving a SUV or 4WD, because ist almost feels like you are driving off-road.
Obviously they are not quite ready for business yet, no one to clean the used cart or even remove the cups and garbage from previous group.
But the course does have good layout
A Bad NY Winter
Played SI's favorite track on Saturday in 20 MPH winds. Fairways, and greens showed the effects of the harsh winter. Nothing better than playing though. New this year is a reverse of the 9's back to Latourette's early days, with 10 now being the opening hole.
total value
So yes ... the reviews are right. It is a muni ... and it is not the most amazing course. But come on people, what do you expect? It is like walking into a Dive Bar and expecting 3 Michelin Star service. But for $35 ?? I will totally go back ... Worth noting, the lack of bunkers is made up for the excessive amount of sand on all of the greens. I suppose they were just plugged and it is what it is ... I was lucky, I was the first one out for the day and flew through 18 in just over 2 hours. Nice club house and solid staff.
greens slow
great course but at this time they are air rating the greens. a lot of sand tough putting conditions.
They don't care about the public golfer!!
Played twice this month and the course is in good condition. Now for the bad. Had a 6:45am tee time on 9/10 and played a 5 hour round. No round starting at that time should take 5 hours unless you play at this course where they surprise you with an 8 am outing starting on the back nine. So much for booking a spontaneous early tee time the night before in hopes of playing a fast round!! This course has become the King of Outings. Call before reserving a tee time as they refuse to post the outings on the website. Played on 9/24 and the round took more that 5 1/4 hours, this on top of teeing off 30 minutes past my tee time. They said it was because they had a group from Silver Lake come in and they slowed down the course. At one point the round was going so slow that the group waiting in back of us on the 12th tee went and yelled at the group on the 13th tee box to speed things up because they saw a small opening on this hole to make up a tiny bit of time and that group wasn't taking advantage of it. Can't make this stuff up!! Playing here makes me rethink the saying, "a bad day of golf is better than a good day at work!!!".
The ground is HARD on Staten Island
Course has great lay out. There tee boxes were hideous. Occasional bold spots on a couple greens. But the ground was so hard it was impossible to find any touch around the greens. I think they had skimped on the water on and around the putting surfaces. But again beautiful location but I think there are better courses in the metro area for the price.
overall expierence
The golf course was in pretty good condition. The man in the grill room was exceptionally great , knows how to treat his customers. The kids behind the counter at the pro shop are either on the computer or watching tv and then they tell you carts have to be in at a certain time because they want to go home.(even though there is and hour worth of light left).
Three Words - Six Hour Round
Very nice course. Unfortunately, due to the amount of hackers they let on, and the fact that not a single ranger was spotted keeping the pace of play, there were routinely 15 min-20 min delays at the par 3's and an overall pace of close to 3 hours for 9.
Poor staff friendliness on the day I played.
When does a tee-time mean a tee-time? Well not at la Tourette. This has nothing to do with the great service GolfNow provides but the basic poor service of La Tourette.
I like had a 6.15am tee-time and was on the course well in advanced of this like others who had booked a tee-time that day. One twosome (who we ended up playing with) had their tee time pushed back twice so there time became 6.30 instead of the 6am they had booked. We in fact ended up teeing off at 6.45. 45 mins later for one set of guys and 30mins for me. One of those guys asked the starter why this was as the starter kept pushing foursomes after foursomes (7 groups in total) out before us. Now as the course’s first tee-time was 5.45 that day you can see why those who had booked a tee-time for the early morning were a little miffed that this was happening. The starter did not want to answer why this was but we later found out that on Wednesday La Tourette push a local club out first but make all those that have a legitimate tee-time wait until they have gone.
I am partly fine with this…. IF, La Tourette would make a block booking for this so mugs like me and others do not have to wait around while the best of the best get to jump a line, jobs for the boy’s.
This has happened at a few of the other NY publics and was stopped, but not at La Tourette as it seems.
Anyway just a heads up for all those early morning golfers wanting to play at this course and as I was always taught, “if you don’t like it, go somewhere else and hurt them in the tills” and I’ll be doing that.
Course wise it’s in good shape, one or two greens need a bit of work but happy with the golf at La Tourette, just not how we were treated
