Confidence Builder

The easiest of the Westchester County public courses to get an early weekday teetime. Have played multiple Fridays teeing off before 7am and finishing in 3:30 to 3:45. Definitely slower later. The first hole, a par 4, must surrender a fair number of aces as it is easily reached with a driver as long as you don't mind challenging the trap running parallel to the front of the green (and even then there's an opening on the left.# Holes 2 thru 5 will basically determine how your round will go as these are the Amen Corner of the course. Two is, I think, an especially challenging par 4 because the fairway narrows to your landing zone and you are dead when left and especially right. The green is slightly below the fairway, and you'd better not miss right, but there's a huge tree left to challenge your approach shot. Three requires you play the ball left of center because it will drain downhill right, and then it's a short shot to an elevated green. Four is a long 4 that requires a solid drive and take an extra club for that iron approach going uphill. Five is a slight dogleg right downhill where players often bag the driver and try and coax a 5 or 7 wood into the smallish landing zone. After that you will get 5 par 3s and 3 5s in the remaining holes. So you can absolutely make hay. 3 of the first 5 on the back 9 are par 3s. On 11, a dogleg left par 5, keep your drive center/right and continue to keep your ball on the right side so that you have a clean shot at the green on approach. On 13, just hit a club that you can knock 160-180 yards out. 17 and 18 (a par 3, of course# can provide great views of the Manhattan skyline on clear days. Your approach shot on 17 will play longer than it looks thanks to the ridge in front of the green, Definitely a walkable course, though the front nine is hilly and 9 is a huge uphill climb followed by a long walk to the tenth tee. Greens are fairly unchallenging, with 3, 6 and 9 the slickest. A fun course for a quick round #if you don't mind getting out ultra early) and a low score possibility. Can't remember it ever being buggy in any way. You may see fox or turkey here. Love playing this course at twilight.

disappointment lurks here...

even with the friendly staff and the cordial grounds crew hovering over you as you tee off, this course left much to be desired. The greens are in dire straits. I understand this being a public course but c'mon! This course features huge brown patches all throughout, compacted bare earth (SOLID), beat up greens and then the unforgiving treelines as well as the blind drives... I don't think I've ever lost this many balls. Never again. Not unless there is a regime change here. I played at Mosholu the day before and Saxon woods the week prior... those courses run circles around this one.

The course is challenging, yet fair for all skill levels

Dunwoodie's staff is friendly and accomodating and the golf carts surprisingly have GPS, totally unexpected on a public course. The course is reasonably well maintained, has interesting elevation changes and slow, flat greens that could use some alterations. Overall playing here is a satisfying, mostly rewarding experience.

Nice course - greens need attention

Enjoyed a nice round of golf on this course which I played for the first time. When I heard it didnt have any water hazards it felt nice. However, after playing a few holes I realized it wasn't as easy as I had expected. The fairways are narrow and sloping which makes it tough. The placement of the driving range could be better and the safety net was inadequate as several range balls had made it onto the course. The greens were generally bumpy and #10 was being repaired.

Cheap course, decent fairways, greens were in rough shape

Starting marshall was very rude; golf pro was super friendly. Greens were in rough shape given the time of year (July), too much sand on them. Driving range - 1/4 of the balls in the bucket were cracked - not worth the $$.

Good fun

Busy public course with a tight front nine & open back nine.
Some holes had GUR, but generally the course was in good condition with true greens. Bunkers could do with attention.
Play was very slow with a group of older players in front, but they soon let us through & from there, no hold-ups.
Enjoyable public course.

Absolutely worth it

Excellent value -well maintained, decent difficulty: overall exceeded my expectations. My only complaint was the quality of golfer that was present on that day -there were some people who hadn't played before, causing us to wait longer than we would have liked. It was just bad luck, nothing to do with the course itself. I'm looking to book another round asap because it was such a great value

Fun day of golf.

Dunwoodie is a great confidence builder. Short course barley need to use your driver. Par 5's are reachable if you can drive it 250 yards so you can have a few possible Eagle chances. Most of the greens are acceptable but 3 and 5 are usually in bad shape.

Worst of the county courses

This course is often in terrible condition due to the fact that it slopes so much water settles in fairways and too many trees block the sun and keeps grass from growing. Very short and good for beginners. Many holes are unplayable due to the slope. Ok warmup facility but few amenities to speak of. Grumpy old county workers as starters.

Great start for my first NY course

Overall good course. The par 3's had good layouts, some par 4's were fairly short. Good for keeping par. (I almost drove 2 greens from the tee). I would definitely recommend this course to others. Only one hole had an excess of water but the course was maintained well, especially since it had rained the day before. The only problem was the tee times were a little backed uo. Even though I tees up 30 minutes after my time I felt the staff was friendly, courteous, and handled it well. I definitely plan to go back when it gets warm again.
