The Golf Club Star Ranch
About
Hutto’s been put on the golf map now that the first-class Star Ranch has opened up on what was once a cattle ranch, boasting a unique collaborative effort from the Morrish brothers (Jay and Carter) and the Bechtol, Russell design firm.
The course sits on a hill and is built around a centralized lake, featuring the typical spectacular Hill Country topography highlighted by plush, undulating fairways and bleached white sand bunkers.
No. 2 is one of the most difficult holes and the first real challenge of your golf day. The 417-yard par 4 has more of an open feel than some of the other holes, but it’s length generally means a rather long approach, and the green is surrounded by several massive bunkers.
Getting there : From Austin, take I-35 north and exit Parmer Ln. Turn right and go east on Parmer to Dessau Rd. Turn left and go north on Dessau, which becomes FM 685. Go 5 miles past FM 1825 in Pflugerville and the club is on the left.

Not common of course, but this happened one round when the cows from the neighboring field decided the grass was greener on the other side. Photo submitted by GordonATX on 07/03/2013
Great Track. Always well maintained
Highly recommended. Absolute beauty of a course and friendly staff
Sub-Par
Club house was friendly and helpful, and that’s all.
However after beginning our round we tee’d off and were immoderate held up on hole 2. By what? A 5 some on a holiday. At first we slowed our game play, enjoyed our round and then by hole 4, stuck and waiting for 15-20 minutes before we could tee off. They took their time chilling, killing grass and putting for days. Now I know, this is not a faculty or faculty issue. That is, until hole 10. We proceeded to drive past the 5 some, and head on to hole 11. After we passed them (just 2 of us) we were met with an outranged 5 some. We politely explained we were just waiting quite a bit, so we passed with clear sky’s and open green ahead, since we were playing much quicker. Later we were met but the marshal whom the 5 some complained to. He informed us, that we needed to get back behind them because it ruins the game flow. I would completely understand if there were a hold up of sorts, but there was not. The marshal explained that the club house must have allowed the 5 some because they are members and they have to play in their favoritism.
Now let me say, I know it’s not proper etiquette to pass a group of guys playing, however they were causing quite the jam behind us as well. That’s said. The faculty and facility did not handle the situation well.
Beeping Beep Beep Beep
First. I love Star Ranch. Its a great course. I only have ONE complaint. Back off on the BEEPING golf carts. Its annoying and unnecessary. Beeping about a turn. Beeping to tell us to order food. But the worst is driving into a restricted area. 5 feet into the rough on quite a few holes. Beeping. Cart stops. Had to back up over and over. I understand not driving into native areas. But this was the rough! Why would you restrict the carts to the fairway??? Please fix this annoying issue!!! its the only reason i'm giving a reveiw. Its that bad!!!
Only issue was that it was cart path only snd I don’t think it was that wet
Great course. “Good” condition
My second time playing this course. It’s a really good layout. Wide open fairways…lots of undulation…the only problem is they had just sanded the greens. They still rolled pretty true, but it affected the speed and reads. It’ll be back in shape in less than a week.
Great facility
Pro shop - always friendly, this time it was Danny.
Range - grass was in great shape and balls are easy.
And the course was in great shape overall and pace was right at 415 which for a weekend is decent.
Great course..reviews are accurate
We walk into the Star Ranch clubhouse, a clean and friendly environment. The staff were nice and very welcoming. They explained the facilities and sent us on our way to the range. One of the bestnpractice ranges you will find...balls are there so no hustle on that point. Grab a bucket and go hit! We didn't have time to try the putting greens. As for the course, it offers wide fairways and some very well maintained greens with challenging pin locations. The pace was a little slow that day as the winds were higher than normal.
Can't wait to go back!
