Hidden Gem
TThis is a short, par-33, 9-hole course that you can easily play in under two hours. It's a great option when you just want to squeeze in a quick round of golf.
They have a small practice facility where you can work on your putting, chipping, and sand shots. At around $40 with a cart, it's a great value.
Don't let the short length fool you. Narrow fairways and mature trees make this course more challenging than you might expect. Accuracy is definitely more important than distance here.
My only complaint is that I wish they would cut the greens a little shorter. They tend to play a bit slow.
Overall, it's a fun, affordable course that's perfect for a quick round.
Want a Quick Round
This is a great course if you live near the lakefront and only have time for a quick round. With 1 par 5 and 4 par 3s, playing over two hours is difficult. We played in 1:40. They have a nice little chipping range but no driving range. Staff is friendly. The greens are standard muni but would be great if they were double cut. It would make the course so much harder. It is almost impossible to lose a ball with no water and well protected out of bounds.
Good Old Chicago Muni
Staff was extremely helpful and friendly, in getting us out in time to get 9 in. Nothing fancy but a great value for a classic Chicago Parks & Rec course. We came from Wrigley Field in search of a course we could get 9 holes in and this was one of the closest that came up. The layout and conditions were very good and pace of play was just OK. Very walkable, and they had nice pull carts for rent.
Staff and course
Bothe staff and course are amazing ... fun to play and meet great golfers.
I love all the CPD courses but this one is special!
Great little track that you can easily play in under two hours even on a weekend. The condition of the fairways and the greens is very good. I really wish they would put up some signs encouraging golfers to rake the sand traps. It’s ridiculous how bad the CPD (not just here) sand traps are if you play anytime after 10 o’clock in the morning. This is an easy fix Chicago!!!
The course is in great shape!
Mike, Wally, Aaron, PJ and Ed made it a wonderful day!
Robert Black Character
One of the best courses in Chicago.
Plenty of great golfers to match up with. Also best layout for pictures.
3rd times the charm!
I recently moved to Chicago from Southern California. I have been trying to re-energize my golf game and despite the more challenging weather, the city provides several low-cost options. Robert A Black is a little gem of a course. Not too challenging, but the fairways, rough, and greens are all in pretty good shape. Even the bunkers are OK if you get there early in the day (hey Chicagoans! Please rake your bunkers!). The guy at the Pro shop is awesome! Friendly and informative!
Great public course
Really enjoy playing at Robert Black Golf Course — it’s a well-maintained course that’s approachable but still fun and challenging enough to keep things interesting. The staff is always friendly, pace of play has generally been solid, and it’s a great spot to sneak in a round without leaving the city. Definitely a gem for Chicago golfers looking for a convenient and enjoyable place to play.
Great value, but…
This is a little gem of a course, but the bunkers need to be raked. As this is a low cost course attracting many golfers new to the game, there needs to be signs and maybe an encouraging word from the starter to have ALL golfers rake the bunkers! It’s a small thing to ask but would help keep the course stay in good shape throughout the day. Thanks!
