River Vale Country Club
About
River Vale Country Club (formerly known as Bergen Hills Country Club.) sprawls across the gently rolling hills of northeast New Jersey. It has been ranked on Golf Digest's list of "Best Places to Play," but it still manages to remain one of Bergen County's most well kept secrets. You'll hardly ever run into crowds on this golf course. The layout has a classic design that incorporates a variety of elevation changes. Tricky uphill and downhill lies will be your biggest challenge on this layout. Strategically placed bunkers lurk beside the greensides and there are several holes where water hazards come into play, including the par-5 fifth, which has a lake on either side of the green. River Vale a tight golf course that demands accuracy and while it's not overly formidable, your skills will definitely be put to the test.

Management is bad
The staffs don't even offer to put your bag in the golf cart, they don't tell you what the pin placement is for the Day and there are no rangers around to keep the pace of place flowing. Not worth of the money
The greens were great
This course has some gimmicky holes. Fairways with side hill lies and blind spots. Luckily I played with someone who knew the course. A lot of elevation changes from tee to green. The greens were in excellent shape and rolled really true and at a fair speed. Nice course to play at least once.
Great conditions, especially the greens
Course was in fantastic shape. The greens especially were lightning fast, on par with any good private or high end resort course. Considering how good the conditions were, good value for the money. Pace of play is reasonable, we finished in a little over 4 hours and we hardly ever waited to hit our next shot. Course is pretty tight. It’s a good test of golf
Good course
I would recommend this course. Conditions were good. Very nice layout too
Really nice facility!
First time playing there on a day when I had to not go too far from the city. River Vale was a great pick. Got it on a lightly-rainy day where there was no breakfast or coffee available, but I get it, tee sheet didn't warrant it. Course was in great shape, Seemed very fair to all levels including thoughtfully-placed forward tees for newer players. Loved the green-tees idea for the newest player (and maybe juniors?), though they only seemed to be on the front 9. Wouldn't mind seeing those tees get rated. Good variety of interesting holes. Greens rolled fast. Pace was incredibly fast as a pair with nobody in front of us on a slightly wet weekday morning. Gem of a place. Will absolutely be back.
Great time
Greens are super fast and very challenging with breaks and hills - course was amazing
Disappointing pace of play due to a large group match
There was a group of 12 students playing a match right in front of us. Because they were playing as a large competitive group, the pace of play was incredibly slow. We ended up having to skip multiple holes just to finish our round.
While I understand this is a public course, the management should not allow such large matches to occupy consecutive tee times without proper supervision, or they should at least stop taking bookings immediately following such groups. It ruined the experience for everyone behind them. I hope the course takes better measures to manage the flow of play in the future.
Great Go-To Option in Bergen County
The course is in pretty good shape for the start of the season, and River Vale usually keeps the course very nice throughout the year.
Greens were fast in April, and hilly in areas, and the course is also pretty wide open, which made the round comfortably challenging.
They have a few places to get warmed up, with a chipping area, which many course don’t have. The amenities are great, a convenient food stop in between the front and back nine, very good food for before/afetr the round and a full bar.
Can’t go wrong if you’re looking for a relaxing, convenient round of golf.
Rainy day golf
It had rained all morning but the course was in really good shape. Not a lot of people out on the course which made pace of play great. For the beginning of the golf season, course is in really good shape
