Castle Bay Country Club
About
Although it is tucked away just north of Hampstead, Castle Bay Country Club will make you feel as though you've been transported to the British Isles. The golf course offers an authentic Scottish-links design that incorporates the natural wetlands of its coastal Carolina location, giving it a truly unique character. The landscape of rolling dunes is covered with native grasses but completely devoid of trees. Tall sand bunkers are strategically placed throughout and there are also expansive waste areas, both characteristics that are true to its links nature. Water hazards come into play on several holes as well. Accurate shot placement is the key to doing well on this course and just like any seaside links layout, the coastal breezes play a prominent role. Much of the difficulty of the golf course comes from negotiating with the prevailing winds.

Too Wet!!
It rained yesterday which made the course almost unplayable! The bunkers were small ponds, and the fairways were mush. All of us were left with soaked and squishy socks. Historically a nice course but DO NOT play after a rain day!!
Slow back 9
Course was a little damp which was expected and dried off on the back half. Front 9 had great pace but back 9 was very slow. No rangers to help with pace of play.
Favorite course
Hurricane proof course as few trees. Almost always a four hour round for a foursome. Play most all courses within 30 miles but play here most often.
Back to golfing
First chance to golf post Hurricane Florence. Glad we decided to play Castle Bay. The course was in much better condition than we expected. Fairways & greens were in very good condition considering the devastation of the storm....Kudos to all who were involved in getting this fun course back into great playing condition!
Glad I didn’t pay the premium rate
Course was in very good shape except for the greens. A LOT of ball marks and very slow. Otherwise, great shape.
course layout
Back nine more difficult, have to hit longer drives to clear hazards.Fairways in great shape and so were the greens. They do need rangers to help speed up play. I can only imagine the time to play if there were walkers.
Would Play Again
Typical beach course, nothing dramatic. The only “danger” is missing fairways from the tee box. Other than that, the course is not trick golf and enjoyable for any level. Probably the best course in the Hempstead/Topsail area.
slooooooooooooooooooooow
Love the course, but thought a mid-day time would give us a faster round. Wrong. Over 5 hours to play, no rangers in sight to speed up the slow group(s). Second time this year with an excruciatingly slow round so I think I'll try one of the other local courses next time.
Like to play this course when I am in town visiting family and friends. Always enjoy the links style course as it is a good change of pace. Seems that there is always a breeze which helps this time of year. Apparently, the winter was colder than usual and a very wet spring, course is still in solid shape and the bent grass greens are in great shape. Staff was professional and courteous.
Not good this year
The course is not in good shape this year. I’m quite disappointed in the upkeep of the course. I will not be playing here for a while. Greens bad, fairways bad, bunkers awful, and the overall upkeep is bad.
Good course for time of year
A lot of other courses in the Wilmington and surrounding areas currently have terrible greens due to the harsh winter. After reading some reviews it seemed like Castle Bay had greens that were still in good shape and the reviews proved to be correct. Overall I thought the course was in good shape especially considering the volume of rain the week before. No wet spots. Tee boxes were nice and soft to get your tee in and were in great shape. Fairways and greens were also in great shape. The rough is a little unforgiving but that is the way the course is styled. Only minor complaint was the sand traps seemed to have some rocks/gravel rather than all sand. Overall I would recommend.
Best in Topsail
Of the courses I’ve played in Topsail Island, this was the best value. Well layed our with quality greens. Used GolfNow to book. Right challenging fairways. Recommend to everyone.
Great staff, great course
The greens had been punched several days before my round but that only affected the speed, the greens were slow but still rolled true. There were a few bad spots on the course but they really didn't factor in to play. Overall, a great course, awesome layout, and the staff here is very friendly. This is a links course so hitting into the rough is penalizing. Driver isn't needed on most part 4's. I definitely recommend this course.
wish i played sooner
I've been coming to this side of the state for 15+ years and have never played here until this year. I'm sorry I waited this long. The course wasn't as hard as I expected. In fact, it was pretty wide open. There's some bushy rough, but for the most part, it's easy to stay out of trouble most of the day unless you're a complete hack. I can't wait to play again. See you the week of the 4th.
Decent Value
Although I've played this course probably30-40 times I hadnt played it for almost a year. Prices have gone up and its not the bargain it used to be.
I played this past weekend and the course is in the worst shape since I've been playing it. Having said that, the greens were ok with only a little Broccoli type stuff growing in it. However , they put some new sand in the bunkers which is horrible..its full of dirt clods and rocks and is very low quality sand that should not be in a sand trap. The fairways had really tight lies mostly and there were a lot of bare areas on the fairways and adjacent to the greens. This area has had really bad weather and its really hurt the golf courses this season.
Challenging links course. 6hcp. Greens bent. Fairways bermuda. Greens very receptive this time of year. And about 9 stimp speed. What would expect from bent this time of year in south. Fairways plush and thick. Look forward to fall when temps cool and bent greens get slick and fast. Best value for money spent in the area. Very Well kept public/semi private course. Kudos!!
