The Trout Club
About
The Trout Club (formerly known as Licking Springs Golf Club) sprawls across a scenic landscape of rolling hills dotted with natural springs that is also home to an abundance of wildlife. Jack Kidwell, a local course architect who has played in role in many of Ohio's golf courses, designed the challenging layout. The course has a traditional design covered with mature trees, which are especially concentrated along the fairways. The undulating greens provide excellent putting surfaces. Their small size and quick speed will test your short game skills. The course is definitely a shotmaker's layout, placing a heavier emphasis on the placement off of the tee rather than distance. It is a layout that requires careful course management and skillful strategy. In addition to the golf course, The Trout Club offers two practice putting and chipping greens as well as a public swimming pool.

Outstanding course
Another awesome experience playing The Trout Club. This course is always in the best shape. Layout is very challenging due to crazy elevation changes and blind shots. Tees, fairways and greens were awesome.
Always a pleasure to hit the Trout Club
Played on a hot sunny day then 1st of July with some long time friends. The hot deal price was too good to pass up. The course was in great shape. There is no sand on this course but does have trees, hills, and water to contend with. It is more of a placement course and if you are above the hole, lookout.... it is a fun course to play, that is in very good shape and the course is looking after itself ensuring the course stays this way. We will definitely be back..
Great course
Unbelievable course, great layout, pace of play was awesome, greens, tees and fairways are awesome. Staff is very friendly, I recommend this course to everyone.
Great course
Been playing here for the last 40 years, greens are always very challenging.
Nice time at the Trout Club
The Trout Club is in wonderful shape!!! The front nine is a little different from the back. The back is much more billy goat and provides some blind green shots which helps to have a playing partner fore caddie for each other... the course is not by any means cookie cutter. No traps, but plenty of trees, streams and ponds to contend with.... very challenging test of golf....
Good Greens, Shabby Course
The Trout Club has a very grand entrance and a nice restaurant. It’s got a decent course layout, and the greens are quick and true. However, the fairways are not short or plush, and the rough is even worse. There’s hardly any cart path anywhere, so if it’s your first time, it can be hard to figure out where to go. Luckily, I was with friends that are from the Newark area, so they’re familiar with the course. It’s a fun course, but don’t have super high expectations. Be on the lookout for the deal time; they frequently post deal times for $14 for 18 holes + a cart. I wouldn’t play The Trout Club for much more than that, to be honest.
Very fun/challenging course
I recently played 18 here for the first time and it was a great time. The facility is a hidden gem on the back roads with a very nice couple of putting greens & restaurants (perfect for an afternoon tee time)
The front 9 was fairly straight with a few dog legs & several bodies of water, for the most part you were able to view the green from the tee box. The back 9 is where it started to be a bit frustrating as there are extreme hills... and more hills. I’m more of your weekend golfer but I do have a decent swing but tracking the ball on the back 9 was challenging to say the least. There are a couple times on the back 9 where you will find yourself having to wait on another group to tee off from a completely separate hole due to them being so close to one another or even 10-15 infront of your tee box.
Overall great experience but next time I’ll most likely opt to play the front 9 only.
Unbelievable Course
Great Public Resort, awesome layout, extremely challenging due to rolling hills on the back nine and quick greens. Can’t wait to play again.
Trout Club
A fun tricky course the layout is pretty basic most holes go back to back but do have some difficulty. I recommend this place for new people or people who don’t have long length on the course
Good tine
Front 9 is great, back 9 has some holes that are impossible. I would play the front 9 twice
Not in the greatest condition
We have played this course for years, and it was always in reasonable condition. But now, the tees, fairways and greens are extremely hard. Like a piece of wood. And there is crabgrass and bare spots everywhere. The course itself is challenging with all the elevation change, and it is in a beautiful setting. But the maintenance has really fallen off. Maybe it will be better next year. Beware that they have already aerated their greens also. They are playing very slowly right now, despite the firmness.
Unbelievably Slow Play
Unbelievably slow play on a Sunday. Slowest play we’ve witnessed in many years. Front nine a twosome held up 4 or 5 groups and had almost the entire front 9 open in front of them weren’t letting anyone through. Got to the back and there were 2 new groups that magically appeared in front of us. Obviously they decided to start on the back. There were 4 groups backed up on #10 and every hole on the back had at least 1-2 groups waiting. Most of these groups weren’t seen on the front so the course was either teeing people off on the back nine or these groups decided themselves to start on the back. Took 45 minutes to play hole #10. Quit after that did not feel like taking 7 hours to play a round when usually we finish in 3. Will not be back for a while and never again on a weekend.
Very scenic golf course and challenging!
We look forward to our return trip to play and have dinner . The facility is a jewel in Licking county
The greens were extremely hard and starting to burn. The tee boxes were in terrible shape and most were extremely hard as well. Usually a great course not sure what is going on there at the moment.
The trout club cleaned me today
The trout club is a true test of a shot maker. There are numerous ponds, streams, trees and elevation hurdles to negotiate. Don’t let the short yardage fool you, with the elevation changes in the rolling hills and blind shots, your skill level of any kind is truly tested... with the great golfnow rate and a reward I could not pass up the lengthy trip to do so with my step Bro n law... I don’t believe any traps are on the course. Don’t need them with all the hills, trees and water....the restaurant looked very inviting even though we passed on it. They have bungalows to stay in for the traveling golf folks...
Awesome Course!!
I absolutely love this course. One of the best golf courses in the Newark, Ohio area. The course was well maintained and the staff is always friendly. I play this course once a year but this year I plan to play this course a few more times this summer and fall. The fairways are in nice condition and the greens are nice. The landscape here is beautiful. Again, a great course. This course allows for some low scores, while presenting some challenges that could result in a dreaded boggie. I will definitely recommend this course to everyone, the scenery is beautiful and the course layout is awesome. So if you have never had the chance to play this course, DO IT!! You will not regret it...
