The Trout Club
About
The Trout Club (formerly known as Licking Springs Golf Club) sprawls across a scenic landscape of rolling hills dotted with natural springs that is also home to an abundance of wildlife. Jack Kidwell, a local course architect who has played in role in many of Ohio's golf courses, designed the challenging layout. The course has a traditional design covered with mature trees, which are especially concentrated along the fairways. The undulating greens provide excellent putting surfaces. Their small size and quick speed will test your short game skills. The course is definitely a shotmaker's layout, placing a heavier emphasis on the placement off of the tee rather than distance. It is a layout that requires careful course management and skillful strategy. In addition to the golf course, The Trout Club offers two practice putting and chipping greens as well as a public swimming pool.

enjoy the view!
have played here hundreds of times and always come back for more. my wife is a member here. great golf but very cold hearted greens. the back nine has a tough reputation but actually plays a couple of strokes easier than the front. enjoy the views!
Great place to golf
Cant complain about anything at Trout club. We had a few guys golfing behind us who almost hit us half a dozen times. But minus the brawl that almost ensued, it was a great time.
Getting Better - Off Course Amenities Are Perfect 10!
Many might harp on course conditions here as fairways were hard to distinguish vs. rough and bare spots were plentiful, likely thanks to area getting hit hard with grey leaf spot. 90% of the courses in this area got hit so perfect conditions for it to eat up the grass and make it look like they didn't water. Read up about it here - https://www.extension.purdue.edu/extmedia/bp/bp-107-w.pdf They were installing a fresh blacktop cart path when we played so expect some smooth sailing out there in another week or so. The fresh black against the green grass made for a great visual around tees and greens.
The greens were just punched but looked like they weren't in bad shape. The course layout itself on the front at least is fun, tight at times but a good mix of different types of holes. Some blind but not too many, use the GolfNow app for GPS, it'll help and they have cool flyovers playing in the restaurant as well. I hear the back is very hilly and each hole is carved out of a valley so lots of straight drives could end up in rough or wrong side of fairway which sounds frustrating but if it was easy, it wouldn't be any fun right?
The extra stars earned here are on the place's clubhouse area. The old trout ladders are nostalgic for sure, great looking pool area and overnight cottages right on site if you are looking for place to get away, they got rooms! Restaurant, bar area looks great, I've been here multiple times and only played once but I like to come just for the drive up and the little things they've thought of around the building. Can't wait to see what course looks like with more TLC, keep up the great work.
Great layout
Liked the course...greens are good but fairways are not so good. Overall a great value.
Trout Club
Paid $13 so I'm not gonna complain to much but if you are expecting anything remotely nice or challenging then play elsewhere. Front 9 is way better to play than back 9.
Nice course
I have played here several of times over the past 8 years and I can honestly say that the course was in excellent shape this past time that a friend of mine and I played. The club house is extremely nice since they had the fire and the staff was great. Only thing we had a problem with was over scheduling the tee times , we had to wait for 5 different groups to tee off before we could even though we had a tee time and when people came that didn't already have a tee time they let them on the course at the same time as us. So it was kinda ling wait to tee off because of that , however other than that , the course was in excellent condition and the greens have never been better. Thank you.
Course needs work-but fun to play
The course layout is very tight. And the way it is layed out makes finding your way around difficult. They have a few signs but they are faded and hard to see. If they put the funds in the course the way they did the restaurant and other amenities it will be a great course. If they clean up the layout it would be a nice executive course. I enjoyed my round and would go back. Can't beat 22 on the weekend!!
Hidden Gem
Was a very pleasant surprise. Course was in great shape. Greens were well taken care of. Has some challenging holes due to no visibility of greens. Amenities and food was great. Planning on coming back for a weekend of play and staying at the new chalet rooms with pool. Enjoyed the trout dinner and golf very much. Definitely a great course to get away from the city. Only improvement would be nice to have drinking water on some of the holes
Blind Shots
Lots of blind shots, forecaddie to get an idea of the lay of the land, up and down often and slopes induce ball to run left or right. Stay below the hoes to avoid unstoppable downhill putts. No sand traps. Take plenty of water with you..no water stops on the course. No curtesy refreshment cart on the Tuesday I was there.
Pretty, but could use a little better grooming..
This is a pretty course, but rough on edges. With better grooming, it would rival some of the nicer courses in the area, but as it is, leaves something to be desired.
to many 90 degree turns
my tee time was not showing on the facilties site and the gentleman diid not like working with golf now.golf now was great gave me a 10.00 voucher.just to many 90 degree turns to the green.
Clubhouse amazing, course is close to being good.
Although course is very short fron blue tees the undulation of fairways and greens protects the course from crazy low numbers. From what i had previously heard the greens were always fast, this has not been the case the last 2 rounds. Greens are " fuzzy" otherwise they roll pretty true. Par 5's are very reachable in two, most holes give the oppurtunity to score. Fairways were in good shape, although on May 28th the fairways were starting to brown already, hope they have watering systems in place. Will play the course again, looks like it is def heading in the right direction, aesthetically the clubhouse and surrounding areas are beautiful!
Worth the Drive to Newark!
Had a great early morning round. Course was in good shape for Fall. Lots of hills and water made for some challenging shots! Staff was awesome, told us a bit about this year's renovations. Club house & restaurant were beautiful! Excellent value, worth the drive to Newark - 10/10 will return!
Trout Club
Great value & experience. Course getting better clubhouse & food excellent.
What a neat place very nice course
Drove up from Cincinnati - 2 1/2 hours....Worth the trip!Played 18 had a great lunch. Beautiful views, nice course, staff was super. Get the reuben sandwich at the bar.
WOW.
Booked this course on a recommendation from a neighbor... Did not disappoint. Far exceeded every expectation... In a word, our experience was WOW!
Amazing clubhouse and pool
I grew up playing here.It was the first time back at the course since the ownership changed. First off the renovations were amazing. When we were here last the place was really in need of tlc. Now the course could use the same tlc that was used for the rest of the facility and I am sure in do time it will.cant wait to see again once the course conditions improve. My rating is strictly based on course conditions.
New Found Gem
First play here. Grounds and building are very nice. Staff very helpful, Some remodeling on course. We skipped number five, between construction crews, and terrain for new pond didn't seem wise to try. Back nine have several holes placed out side to side traveling back and forth. Watch for errant shots from the other fairways.
A very positive first visit. No doubt we will return
Very pretty clubhouse and swimming pool - fun course
The newly remodeled clubhouse and swimming pool area are really pretty. The front nine is fairly level with sloping greens (stay below the hole) whereas the back nine is really hilly with less severe greens. The course is not long, but is fun to play because it rewards good shots.
