Roses Run Country Club
About
Roses Run Country Club is touted as being northeast Ohio's toughest public golf course. The course has an interesting mix of holes from lengthy par 4s to tough par 3s and reachable par 5s. The front nine is a traditional links layout while the back nine hugs the Cuyahoga River with winding fairways that melt into fast, sloping greens. The layout incorporates a variety of elevation changes ranging from subtle to dramatic. There are also water hazards and strategically placed bunkers coming into play throughout. Roses Run Country Club will require some creative shot-making and the use of every club in your bag. It's a formidable layout that will test even the most skilled players. There is a driving range and practice putting green you can use for warming up, which might be a good idea before taking on this tough course.

Could be much better
Had played here a year ago, liked most of the holes and wanted to share it with a relative. Pace & Conditions ruined this day.
Tee Boxes (Gold): uneven, weeds and crabgrass, very long grass; #14 and #15 hit tree branches on my follow-through it was so overgrown; #13 I still don't know how i threaded the overhanging trees in an already narrow shoot
Fairways: No complaints
Rough: Uneven
Greenside: Fringe was not fringe, and made for very unpredictable chipping.
Greens: Horrible. Our entire threesome suffered all day, watching putts bounce, wobble and navigate everywhere but to the hole, save for my birdie on 18. Felt like they hadn't been rolled in weeks, and we were all easily robbed of strokes around the greens.
Pace: Waited on every shot on the front nine, which somehow included a 3-group backup on the 9th tee.
Sorry, but we don't plan on coming back.
Awful ....... gone downhill ....... a lot.
The course conditions were awful. Greens were slow. Velcro like! And bumpy. Fairways were patchy. Tees were full of clover.
Took 5 hours and fifteen minutes. No rangers. We had a specific tee time. When we showed up the "starter" (really a cart mover) told us to go get in line. What? No real starter. Could have been a free-for-all except the golfers were gentlemen. Ahead and behind us.
They should be ashamed. And I didn't play badly. These are not sour grapes. I played reasonably well.
I will not be back. A nice Brian Hundley designed golf course ruined by lack of attention to course conditions.
Awkward
Confusing layout with poor signage between holes. Played front nine in 1 3/4 hours. They double teed the back nine. Waited on every shot. It took 3 hours for the back nine. We won't go back.
Scott the starter is exceptional. The course is in decent shape and has lots of challenging holes.
Since I had an 1+ hour drive I decided to golf Fairways at Twin Lakes (9 hole course) before this course. I finished much earlier than planned so I was over 2 hours early for my scheduled tee time. Scott the starter let me go off the back 9 since the front 9 was packed. It was still packed when I finished my 1st 9 so Scott let me play the back 9 again. I really appreciate such wonderful
customer service!! Now to the course. The back 9 is loaded with tough challenging holes...bring plenty of balls because you'll need them. The course conditions fairways and greens were in excellent condition. The tee boxes do need some work! Highly recommend the course.
LOTS OF CHALLENGES ESPECIALLY ON THE BACK 9
I really like this course, and play it almost exclusively every year I've been in the area, about two years now.
The course is well kept, and last fall was just as good as it gets! I've only been out once this year because of all the rain. The course endured a lot of water, but was still in pretty good shape. Some tall grass in the rough, but that is to be expected as a result of weeks of continual rain. Two of the most challenging holes I've ever played, including 8 years in Florida, are the par 5 12th and par 3 17th. Man, they are difficult! Great price to play through Golf Now.com.
Worst design ever!
First and last time played. Poorly marked and distance between green and next tee box caused confusion. Many greens in poor shape. Got a good deal from GolfNow but will never play again regardless of cost as it may have been a bargain it certainly had no value
Memorial day
I have played the course many times- it's a fun but quirky layout.
The day I played it was extremely slow- took us 3 hours to play nine holes. After nine we called it a day.
I will try the course again later this summer
Fun Day
This is an awesome course. The front is a links-style with several sweeping dog legs and the back plays more of the typical American parkland with some forced carries over creeks and views of the Cuyahoga River. I don't get to play this course often, but it is always fun and through GolfNow $26 on a Sunday morning is a fantastic deal. Pace of play was a non-issue as the forcast called for rain so people must have stayed home. Course is probably impossible to walk due to the distance between holes. This was a good day.
Although there were some smaller things that are keeping this from being in the conversation with some of the premier courses. And some of it is understandable, running a course like this requires immense amounts of funds, and with so many courses around it (Brookledge, Ellsworth, Fox Den) being city owned the funds may not be coming here.
Some of the tee boxes were mostly crab grass and clover, they weren't chewed up and green, a little weed killer may fix this? It wasn't a big issue as you shouldn't be taking a divot on the non-par 3 tees anyways. played the tips and some of the tee markers were pushed so far back on the box, that you had an uneven lie as the tee box sloped down so I had to move a bit. Also, playing with my sister, there were 2-3 holes that didn't even have red tee markers out. On 13 & 14 there are big tree limbs that stick out in front of the tee that block the shot. A few minutes with a chainsaw will fix this.
The greens on the front were unputtable, too fast, and very bumpy as they had not recovered from punching yet. The back 9 they were perfect though quick and rolled much truer. Some pins were totally inaccesable- just a few paces onto the back or front of the green with nowhere to miss or bailout. A little TLC and mindfulness of the ground crew will have this be a top 10 course in no time. What I'm picking at is the edges and I want to restate that this is an amazing layout and a joy to play. I just don't want to see it go down hill like so many other courses. Keep up the good work and I will for sure be back to play again.
May Update, big improvement in conditions
Wow, course conditions have greatly improved since last playing in April. Green were fast and firm, the fairways were hard and fast too.
This course is fun, especially the back nine, the front nine is a more of a acquired test. Too many sharp doglegs, lacks tall trees in places to defend the doglegs and houses. Because of this several holes have nets, other holes have tall hedges (preferable to nets). Houses are really visible, not that they are really in play.
This course is best for better players, it can be more penal in some areas slowing down play. Lots of forces carries, but is pretty open for the most part.
I played with my four year old after leagues went out on Thursday, it took 2:45 minutes to play the front. The starters warned us that Thursdays were the worst night to play because of the leagues. We waited at least five minutes on every tee except the ninth.
Top form
Fast greens and best rough I've played this year. I have been losing a lot of balls in the thick roughs so far this year but I finally found a course that is cutting them. Best tip I can give is assume the greens are flat and straight if you aren't sure. Most of them are.
Late April Review
Roses Run was designed by Brian Huntley, who is a local golf architect and has design several of the finest courses in the area. RR is a nice course, some gorgeous challenging holes, but also some that are underwhelming and ugly (because of protection netting put up on the tee boxes). The 12th - the 15th are some of the most fun and scenically beautiful in the area. With view of the Cuyahoga River, waterfalling streams, and natural settings, it is pure enjoyment. I wish they would grow strategically larger trees to limit the routes of stray balls of tees into house on other tee boxes. But the design is better than its reputation and the typical maintenance of the course.
There was still aeration marks in the green making putting difficult. But for the last 15 years or so since I first played this course, the overall maintenance has been substandard for a course of this quality.
It is very similar to Raintree, another Huntley design, but not the best example of his work. It could use mature trees, like Manikiki on the 2nd hole, or Raccoon Hill on 13,15, & 16, but it doesn’t look like they have planned to do that in the past.
It was recently overseeded and the rough was very penal with spring rains and the greens needed to be rolled. Both are expected in April in Northeast Ohio. The course seemed to be in it’s normal condition which was below where it should be.
Lot of fun golf holes, and shots to be had.

Back Nine Challenge
For April, the course was in decent shape. There was no starter so it was backed up to begin, but played decently with minimal waiting.. If you can survive holes 12-14 you may have a good day.
JD @ The Run
Nice course, many hazards. Hole #12 is a great hole. Lot of OB because of the houses
Great Course
We really enjoyed this golf course. There where some very challenging holes, but many where open and long. It has everything you need to challenge yourself, water, bunkers, tree lines and a few tough greens, although not sure why they chose to place the flags as if it was the Masters. Over all we like it and we will play this course again.
Winter Golf
We played 18 holes with a cart. We booked our reservation on golf now. When we arrived to the course we were charged $6 more than the advertised rate. When I showed them my reservation they were very unfriendly and basically said tough, pay more or go home. Wow, then they blamed the booking service. It's not the $ it's the principle. They advertise a low rate get you there then charge more. I won't be going back. It's supposed to be FUN.
