Rose City Golf Course
About
Rose City Golf Course is the second oldest municipal track in the Portland area. In 1921, A.H. "Jay" Gould played his first round of golf ever at Eastmoreland Golf Course. After returning home, he decided to look for a good place to hit golf balls and came upon The Rose City Speedway. He spoke with C.P. Keyser of the City Park Bureau and obtained permission to burn the tall grass on the infield so that golf balls could be found.
Jay and friend Herbert George used shovels and hoes to carve out a nine-hole course on the speedway infield. Tin cans were used for cups, packing cases for tee-boxes, and iron rods and rags for flags. The Oregonian and Journal Newspapers ran a story on the new golf course and 30 golfers showed up the following Sunday to hit balls around on the burnt grass and dirt. The main hazard was a head-on train collision that occurred earlier in the summer and partially blocked the seventh green.
After a few weeks, the Rose City Golf Association was founded which marked the beginning of the course. Full cooperation from the city and donations from businesses and individuals solidified the construction. George Ott drew up a nine-hole plan and work began in the spring of 1922. Play continued in the spring, but was stopped in the summer due to long grass and no mower. Play started again in the fall, but stopped again due to motorcycle racing. In the winter of 1922-23, the viaduct on the west end of the track washed out and put an end to the races. On Jan. 31, 1923 the first green fee ticket was sold to Jay Gould and in the spring, more than 800 played in one day. The city then took over the course completely.
Today, Rose City Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-72 course with rolling fairways that are lined with a variety of large trees. Water comes into play on holes 10, 11, 14, and 15 and greenside bunkers are well placed.

course in great shape
course in great shape. They were able to mow the ruff after some wet weather. made it easy to find balls.
Stellar condition
This is one of my favorite (public) courses and it is in the best shape I’ve seen it in years. Greens are rolling pure feel smooth (not bumpy like most public courses)
Fairways are filling in nicely (from the typical muddy up-heaved winter fairways) and most fairway and rough lies were pretty plush.
Btw very little to no goose poop which you won’t find on just about all other Portland public courses!
GOOD DAY TO GOLF
WE PLAYED IN 4:15 LENGHT OF TIME. COURSE WAS WET MADE FOR DIFICULT SHOT MAKING DUE TO SOFT FAIRWAYS. ROUGH WAS LEFT LONG AND MADE THE BALL HARD TO FIND IN THE TALL GRASS AND LITTLE WHITE FLOWERS. THE GOLF CARTS ARE PRETTY NEW ELECTRIC RAN GREAT, BUT THE CITY THOUGHT THEY WERE WORTH $17 A ROUND. A BIT OVER THE $15 TO $16 I'M USED TO PAY. OFF COURSE AMENITIES WERE NONE. CLUB HOUSE IS A GRAND OLD BUILDING AND THE CITY SHOULD INVEST IN A TOTAL RESTORATION. THANKS RONALDB45
Pace of Play was way too slow
Had a 4:20 tee time and didn’t tee off until 4:30. Tried to play 18, but we made the turn at 7:30!!!! Ridiculously slow and somehow needs to be fixed
Post rain play
Afterbirth a web days of hat day ain't expected the course tobacco ev a soggy mees, but I wa surprise to it in great shape! Fantastic job grounds crew!
Great course
Very entertaining course, narrow fairways, nicely maintained., easy to reach from downtown Portland.
Awesome course
Great course, nicely kept. Friendly staff and hearty food. Very enjoyable.
Vert Playable
The course was in good condition for the end of January. Of course no carry on tee shots but greens were in very good condition and rolled true.
will play it again soon.
Wet every where in Oregon
In decent shape for weather. Please roll or cut green every day you can
Winter round
Course was in good shape, greens excellent and fairways good, surprising given the wind storms and all the limbs being down...the grounds crew did an excellent job cleaning up!!
Great condition
This course is in amazing condition for the winter. On top of that, the price is super cheap right now. Highly recommend.
Customer service needs improvement
I arrived to the course about an hour earlier than my reserved tee-time, I didn't ask for playing early but was told immediately that I have to play exact time that I reserved which is totally okay and it's right thing to do, but the tone and facial expression were quite aggressive. The gentleman seemed unhappy to communicate with people,
the green condition needs to improve much....
looks like the maintenance is gone away for good !
Place needs some upgrades
Greens/tee boxes are in rough shape.... guess you can blame that on the time of year but compared to the other courses around town these are in the bottom portion. The guy working hates golfnow and was not afraid to tell us. He didn't like that we were early for our tee time and told us if we wanted to play earlier than our tee time we could have paid them $30 instead of the golfnow rate. For $30 I would play just about any other course. Without that golfnow rate they would not have gotten our $68 in fees for dirty golf carts. Definitely not a course to keep in our regular rotation. Then he makes a rude comment to himself when he thought I had left the pro shop...pretty funny when I called him on it. I decided not to spend any more money in the pro shop. Definitely not the type of guy I want working for my company.
the green condition..... lots of room to improve compared to nearby courses
value wise..... o.k.
the green conditions.... worst ever saw in anyother course.... never want to recommend to anybody even with $ 1 to play
the staffs... rude. not polite....
;(((
November sunny golf
Course is in great condition, it always is. Only negative thing was being told to speed up our pace to be sure to allow the groups behind us "to finish before dark", like we didn't want to finish before dark?
