Rose City Golf Course
About
Rose City Golf Course is the second oldest municipal track in the Portland area. In 1921, A.H. "Jay" Gould played his first round of golf ever at Eastmoreland Golf Course. After returning home, he decided to look for a good place to hit golf balls and came upon The Rose City Speedway. He spoke with C.P. Keyser of the City Park Bureau and obtained permission to burn the tall grass on the infield so that golf balls could be found.
Jay and friend Herbert George used shovels and hoes to carve out a nine-hole course on the speedway infield. Tin cans were used for cups, packing cases for tee-boxes, and iron rods and rags for flags. The Oregonian and Journal Newspapers ran a story on the new golf course and 30 golfers showed up the following Sunday to hit balls around on the burnt grass and dirt. The main hazard was a head-on train collision that occurred earlier in the summer and partially blocked the seventh green.
After a few weeks, the Rose City Golf Association was founded which marked the beginning of the course. Full cooperation from the city and donations from businesses and individuals solidified the construction. George Ott drew up a nine-hole plan and work began in the spring of 1922. Play continued in the spring, but was stopped in the summer due to long grass and no mower. Play started again in the fall, but stopped again due to motorcycle racing. In the winter of 1922-23, the viaduct on the west end of the track washed out and put an end to the races. On Jan. 31, 1923 the first green fee ticket was sold to Jay Gould and in the spring, more than 800 played in one day. The city then took over the course completely.
Today, Rose City Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-72 course with rolling fairways that are lined with a variety of large trees. Water comes into play on holes 10, 11, 14, and 15 and greenside bunkers are well placed.

the green condition needs to improve much....
looks like the maintenance is gone away for good !
Place needs some upgrades
Greens/tee boxes are in rough shape.... guess you can blame that on the time of year but compared to the other courses around town these are in the bottom portion. The guy working hates golfnow and was not afraid to tell us. He didn't like that we were early for our tee time and told us if we wanted to play earlier than our tee time we could have paid them $30 instead of the golfnow rate. For $30 I would play just about any other course. Without that golfnow rate they would not have gotten our $68 in fees for dirty golf carts. Definitely not a course to keep in our regular rotation. Then he makes a rude comment to himself when he thought I had left the pro shop...pretty funny when I called him on it. I decided not to spend any more money in the pro shop. Definitely not the type of guy I want working for my company.
the green condition..... lots of room to improve compared to nearby courses
value wise..... o.k.
the green conditions.... worst ever saw in anyother course.... never want to recommend to anybody even with $ 1 to play
the staffs... rude. not polite....
;(((
November sunny golf
Course is in great condition, it always is. Only negative thing was being told to speed up our pace to be sure to allow the groups behind us "to finish before dark", like we didn't want to finish before dark?
fun course toplay and enjoy natures....
major monday setting is an excellent idea !
RoseCity, Public course
Super grumpy check in guy. No signs indicating where to go from green to tee box, would have been lost without my friend who knows the course. Beautiful day, wide open fairways, great course for the beginner.
Old growth trees make this a beautiful course.
Always well groomed with some challenging long holes. Three par 5's on the back 9.
First time at Rose City GC
I recommend playing 18 holes at this challenging old course. Tee boxes, fairways and greens were all in excellent condition. Challenges were narrow fairways for the long hitters, not as narrow for shorter hitters, making it challenging for all levels of play. Back (blue) tee boxes were not just 400 yards longer white tees, but more challenging locations as well. I played the white tees. Stay out of the rough, or bring extra balls! Plan your second shot carefully, approaching the green properly will pay dividends. I scored 8 over my handicapped par score, but would do things differently next round. You’re going to love Rose City GC.
Late summer golf
Course is well watered and greens were in great condition. Congratulations to the grounds crew!
Rose City GC
This course I love playing Everytime! It would be even more enjoyable if they blew air across the greens a little more often so the good greens they have putt even better, lots of trees leave some stuff on them. Maybe I’ll remember an extra towel next time ha but it’s a great value to play here IMO
Welll maintained golf course
Very well maintained and lots of big trees providing cool tree shadow.
monday, after major pga tour , very exciting and challenging.. pin position.. liked it much.. had more fun..
wish the green could have been faster, though
Best greens in portland
The greens are some of the best in porrland, for sure of the city courses, if only the great blue had these greens. Layout easy as length a bit short. Just fun pleasant course., well worth the money
