McNary Golf Club is located on the site that once was the homestead of Charles McNary (1874-1944), prominent Oregon Congressman, lawyer, and vice-presidential running mate of Wendell Willkie. Since he was an ardent golfer, it is appropriate that this course was named in his honor at its opening in 1962. The course was developed by Jim Sill who wanted to build an enjoyable course for the average golfer. Initially, the McNary home was used as the clubhouse. Today, modern clubhouse facilities, including the well known McNary Restaurant & Lounge, overlook the course. All the necessary amenities are available. The golf course features lush fairways, spacious greens, and hazards that provide a challenge for all golfers. Claggett Creek comes into play on holes 1, 9, 10, and 18. The challenge and beauty of the course has also been augmented with several small lakes with fountains.

A uniquely challenging course

This course is well designed and offers enough hazards and OB areas to keep you on your toes. The layout is unique with homes on the outskirts of most of the course, but were only occasionally in a 'slicer's' line of fire. The greens were terrible as they has just been aerated and sanded, and I could have easily saved a dozen strokes because of this. Still, I would enjoy returning when they settle and try the course again.

Ladies Day playing Swarm Ball

I am all for letting everyone play golf, young and old, male and female. But, everyone should also play with proper golf etiquette.
After you hit the ball, go to YOUR ball and prepare to take your turn after your playing partners hit theirs. It should not take more than 30 minutes to play a hole.
I tee'd off at 8am and made the turn at 9:30. At 9am the ladies club tee'd off on the both the front and back nines. Needless to say I had to wait and play behind 4 foursomes of ladies for the back nine.
If the starter would have told me this was going to happen I would have started my game 2 or 3 hours later. Instead I was held up by these groups which turned my 4 hour round into over 6 hours. Unbelievable. I won't be back. There are better courses closer to Portland that I'd rather spend my money.

old ladies day

I had an 8am tee time. When I made the turn there were 4 groups of old ladies in front that were playing swarm ball. It took 30 min to play 1 hole. No exaggeration. I picked up my ball and walked 4 holes in front of them and finished playing 17 and 18.
If I would have known they were starting groups off the front and back at the same time I never would have played.
I'll never be back. Its a perfect course for old retired people and ladies who want to socialize and hit a little white ball.

Good course in Salem area

Good course, in good condition, the majority of the course is pretty straight forward. On the shorter par 4's the fairways are tight, on the longer holes the fairways open up. Greens roll well, are not too challenging, with the exception of a few holes where you don't want to be above the pin. Maintenance does a good job, only issue I saw was the fringe was a little hairy, you could actually have a bad lie in the fringe. The 18th hole is a great closing hole, unless you can hit a nice draw, leave the driver in the bag on 18, large hazard from about 80 out to the green, will force a layup shot. Also 18 has a very large green, pay attention to the flag, you do not want a long downhill putt on this hole! Also there is no driving range, just a net that you can hit some balls into to warm up, nice chipping and putting green though. The patio at the 19th has a great view of 18 green, nice place to relax after your round.

Beautiful old-school course

Had a great round due to immaculate fairways, tough but true greens and no backup.
