Golfer Reviews
Great condition.
It was a great day, busy because of the holiday but played in less than 5 hours. Course is well managed and is challenging.
typical staten island course
once again, i gave this course a chance but i was let down like usual. cousre was nice for a fall day but pace of play is terrible. tee time of 2:20 and couldnt finish 18 holes due to the usual non golfer mentality of " its only them " on the course. played first four holes than had to swing around to play them again but still caught the foursome in front because of being inconsiderate. finished 9 regulation holes in 3 hours (played 13) and went to go off the fromt again not to be stuck behind bad golfers and was treated like trash by the "starter" wearing a NDA pullover. i was told if i wanted to play 18 holes i " shoulda came earlier". well since i shot -2 on the front my pace of play is sufficient to finish 18 holes in 2 hours but i can dral with 3 hours. after i was was talked down to and scolded by the guy whos just a tough guy " typical" , we swung back behind the foursome and continued to race the clock to bet sunset to no avale. we asked if someone could keep their pace of play up and was directed to call the club house. its mind boggling to me how no course on staten island has marshals that tell people you cant look for your ball for 15 mins and play ready golf. but as expected we miandered on into the darkness. 17 holes were play in regulation making it an unfinished 18 holrs in 4 1/2 hours. its also disgusting of how much these staten island "municipal courses" charge $50 USC , not pesos, to play a round of golf when it could be parralled to community service. thats the twilight fee too. $75 on weekend mornings!!! $50 during the week!!!! you can play rutgers in nj for $50 on a weekend and you have to keep the pace of play or they kick you off. its absurd how any course on staten island can charge more than $30 on their help yourself courses. GO TO JERSEY !!!!!!!
Nice course
Slow play no rangers out directing groups. 2 players took 5 hours
Terrible experience
Our tee times were 9:16 and 9:24. First group didn't get out till 10:14, and took over 5 hours to finish. No ranger on the course to keep groups moving and you can't continue to do 8 min tee times, most amateur players cannot sustain this pace.
Sunday golf
Greens were not in good condition, right after aeration. Round took just over 5 hours. Value for the money is ok but for a couple more bucks you may actually putt and finish a round in just over 4 hours.
Pretty views, poor conditions.
Simply put, the course is beat up. It's possible that because of a busy summer it was difficult for their crew to tend to the course's needs consistently. It isn't a terribly challenging course, though it is made complicated by the extremely slow pace at which I've played every time. I wish they wouldn't overbook, every time, and allow for a steady flow throughout the day. I will play there again, though I won't rush back.
Slow play rules the day
Play was slow as all courses have been on Staten Island this year. Course was nice and greens fast. Still think Silver Lake is the best shape for public course on SI but South Shore has improved ALOT over the last year and is a nice break from the busy Silver Lake course. Needs some more water in play to be a bit more fun. Overall a good spot to play plus 10 bucks back when you return cart.
Good course
Had a lot of fun and played my best round ever. Would have put up a better score if south shore had watered the greens and put a few yardage markers in the fairway.
remarkable renovation!
I grew up playing golf on this course in the early
seventies with persimmon woods & MaxFli Blue Dots/balata covered golf balls. The course layout
always intriqued me, but was a bit rough to say the
least. I was very surprised @ the present condition
of this great layout! So many improvements!!! I just
wish players would repair their ballmarks & divots
& show more respect & appreciation for Staten Is's
public courses I so highly recommend playing.
Country club feel
As a SI resident this is the first time playing the course in ten years or so.
The condition was good but crowded even for a 3:22 tee time.
We played only 15 holes in four hours,no ranger or cart person.
To add insult to injury the course collects ten bucks for the cart key.this is a first for this golfer and I have golfed in twelve states in the US and a few in Mexico.
Needless to say I forgot to tell my wife about the key and am out the ten bucks!
slow pace
I had 9am tee times and there were 4 foursomes waiting ahead of me and i knew it was going to be a long day. 40 minutes in and I didn't even finish the second hole yet. They need to space out the times better. Clubhouse smells like mold.
surprisingly shocked
Ive been playing this course for years but in the last year or two I have refused to play here because its was in horrendous shape. Until one of my coworkers said they got a new grounds keeper and he really fixed it up. And yes he did. The greens are in awesome condition. There are actual fairways. and for the most part the rough has grass where in the past it would have been weeds or hardpan dirt. In closing im really happy to see change for the better at SSGC. I always thought it had a fun layout and now it has to turf to match
SI back on the map
Hadn't played it in 30 years, best shape I've ever seen it. New owners, major improvements, very good shape. Played it down and never had a bad lie, fairway or rough. Good pace of play, 4:15 for a foursome on Thurs 9:00 am. If you haven't played it in many years, I highly recommend it, you will be pleasantly surprised.
Slow and Long at Times
Confusion on the tees with no pace of play kills this course at little. The layout is fun and some really challenging holes. Needs a little work but don't all. (Greens ) Ruff was challenging at times and distance will be hard for some short hitters.
South shore cc
it did cost 50 bucks a player on golf now but was worth it because of the courses amazing condition... The greens were immaculate and fairways just as nice.. Right now this golf course is a great place to play..
Course is nice
I like South Shore because it's in pretty good shape and is convenient to get to. The price I got from GolfNow was also good for myself and my daughter to play 18, with a cart. My only criticism is that they let on twilight and other players that start on the 10th hole and, while we were moving rapidly through the round through 9 holes where we would have been done in about 4 hrs, we were really slowed by people that came in and played from 10 on.
Good Time
Great course, excellent value for the money. Conditions are much better then last year
