First time playing. Don’t be fooled by the fact that there is no direct way to get there and your route will take you through some sketchy areas of Philly. Was prepared for a dog track when we pulled up, but quite to the contrary.
I got to talking with who (I assumed) was the ranger and he explained that the new owners were investing in the course and making a commitment to improving. That was evident. Tee boxes, fairways, greens, all in good shape. Bunkers not bad (well maintained) but need a little help.
Layout is interesting- a few wide open holes, a few shot making holes, and a few challenges mixed in to make it a worthwhile play.
Pace of play was questionable, but we were behind a foursome of seniors so it could have just been rotten luck. The guy in the pro shop was stereotypical Philly- chip on the shoulder and an attitude, but it is what it is in the middle of the city.
Wouldn’t go out of my way to play there again just because it is inconvenient to get to, but given the right circumstances, would definitely go back.
Melrose
First time playing this course and I would definitely go back. The fairways were excellent and the greens were in great shape. A lot of bunkers around the greens.. We had a foursome and we finished in under 4 hours.
Melrose
2nd time playing this wonderful course in the last month. The new ownership has really made a big difference. The greens and bunkers are in great shape. Fairways are decent and serviceable. The tee boxes need work. It is a Donald Ross design so you really need to be accurate with your shot-making. All in all, it is a gem that will only continue to improve. I will be back to play it again.
New owners
Haven't had a chance to play Melrose this year but it is my home course. Much improved greens and fairways. I understand Tee boxes are next.
What a pleasant surprise food and beverages on the course. Staff was outstanding.
Next time we visit the lounge.

A very good test with a wide variety of
Shot values. The conditioning was acceptable
but could be improved upon.
Melrose
Very nice layout, shot makers course, put ball in correct position and you can score here, don’t short side yourself. It’s dam. Near impossible to get up and down if you do, green speeds seemed a little inconsistent, but an overall nice experience, food is good, barmaid and cart girls are gorgeous, and very personable! Go and give this course a try!!
Horrible course
This course is North Philly’s version of FDR. Mud for tee boxes, pools for bunkers, cliffs for greens.. every tee box was forward 50+ yards, so the already short course turned into a chip and putt. Starter told us to pick up pace while waiting for the group in front on every hole. If you pay more than $20 for this course, you’ve been scammed.
Great Course Overall
This is the fifth time I’ve played Melrose since May of this year it’s always a challenging course with a great layout. It’s hilly with plenty of challenging holes.
The greens are in great shape for the most part and the bonkers are well-maintained. The staff is friendly and the grill with a full bar is great. I understand the course has been sold recently and that improvements continue to be made. It’s also a very reasonable price for a great course in the area.
