Juniata
Had not played Juniata in 2 years but was looking to play 18 on a Friday for a reasonable price. Good luck! Found a Hot Deal for $18 including the cart. Beats the heck out of just going to a driving range or paying the over-inflated "Friday Prices" other golf courses are charging nowadays.
I had a wonderful time playing Juniata. The staff make you feel like you are family. Eileen and Bryn in the Pro Shop and Steve, driving the tractor, are all incredibly nice / friendly people. There is a real sense of community there that you do not normally find at other golf courses.
Are the course conditions "fabulous"? No, but you know that ahead of time and so if you go in with the proper mindset you can have a really nice time and save some money. You also can't beat their prices for hot dogs and beer!
I play golf 2 to 3 times a week, year-round.
I am going to add Juniata back into my rotation for those days when I want to play a relaxed round without breaking the bank. Definitely worth playing again.
The course needs a motto!
The staff can't be beat, even though I tried. Maybe next time I- will try to bribe them. Anyway, the course is situated on the beautiful and majestic Frankford creek which comes into play whether you like it or not.' If you are an occasional golfer or breaking in a novice do yourself a favor and leave the pro vi at home...If a Titleist is going to carry a hazard so will a Nitro. Which brings me to a suggested motto for the course "It takes a lot of balls (golf) to play Juniata! Go and enjoy one fun golf course. Just remember you're not playing Melrose!. ...............Ever.
City: Municipal Course
Took my son# who is learning golf, here for about $40/player with cart included. Solid value. However you get what you pay for. Cart barely made it up hills. Course is tight. Narrow fairways. Brought wasn't mowed and the greens were in rough shape in June. In August these must be burned out. Look. Have the right expectations. We had a good time. Got to swing the club casually for 18 holes for "cheap". But if you are used to well maintained courses... This is far from that.
Tough course to play
First of all, the staff was very welcoming and friendly. My problem was the course. It was not easy to follow because of the layout. The signs were confusing. We were criss-crossing from one hole to another. The grass was so high it was hard to find the ball. Most of the tee boxes were hard as cement, not easy to put a tee in the ground. For a hundred year old course I would think that's its not going to go away so more money should be invested in it. We didn't have much fun.
Confusing
Great, cheap round of golf - 18 holes for next to nothing through GN, plus the course gives you a hotdog and drink for booking 18, but the course is rough and the layout is super confusing, repetitive, and could use a bunch of TOC
What happened to my local course?
I played on Thrsday, I was discouraged on how the course has been managed since the death of Bob Wheeler. Bob had the course in great shape and now it is filled with crab grass and trash and weeds everywhere. The price is very good but the condition of the course was a big dissapointment. No water in either the ball washers or to drink. Giant holes between the 4th and 5th holes. Tees were overgrown and not cut or marked very well. I used to love playing this course but if it stays like this I just can't play like this.
A solid cheap option for a round of golf
This was my first time to Juniata. The course was honestly in better condition than I expected for early March and recent rain/snow melting, as well as for the price (~$35 for the round). A good variety of holes, especially for a beginner golfer such as myself. There’s a putting green, but no driving range. Staff members were friendly. A pro/con with the course is that they allow walk-ons, and tee times are on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you want to show up and play, this works great. But if you reserve in advance online, don’t expect them to honor your tee time. Depending on how busy it is, you might have to wait for a bit to start. Pace of play was pretty slow, took about 4.5 hours for the round. I think because of the price and this being one of the few courses open this early in the year, there were a lot of people in general and also a lot of beginners who don’t really understand how to keep a good pace. Overall though, if you’re looking for a cheap round of golf and you have the time to wait/play a slow round, this is worth it. I still had a great time.
