Boone Golf Club

About
Boone Golf Club is one of the area's most popular public courses. It was designed by Ellis Maples, the architect of many of the South's finest courses. Utilizing the dramatic Hill Country landscape, the course is as scenic as it is challenging. From the elevated tees you'll get a view of the surrounding mountains and the winding streams that meander through the golf course. The wide fairways are bordered by colorful wildflowers and the greens have subtle but tricky undulations. The par-5 sixth is one of the most memorable holes on the course. The green is the most challenging element of this hole, not only is it steeply pitched there is also water guarding the front. Boone Golf Club is a challenging but fair layout that golfers of all skill levels enjoy playing.

One of my favorites
Been playing this course a couple of times a year for years now. It’s one of my favorite courses. Not overly long or hard but fun to play. And a great environment with great views. It’s actually way flatter than you would expect. There are only a couple of “mountain holes”. The staff is outstanding. And the course is always in good shape. Especially for the amount of play it gets. It has rained a good bit lately. So it was pretty soft today. The price has went up a good bit the last few years. And a weekend round costs you $100. If you play on the weekend you should also expect a 4.5 to 5 hour round. They double tee. And the later in the wave you play. The slower it’s going to be. The staff is great. They treat you like they are glad your are there. The tees and fairways are in good shape. The greens are really good. Very smooth. And you don’t ever want to be above the pin.
1 is a medium length dogleg right par 4. Downhill tee shot with a great view. You want to be on the left. Approach over a small creek to a large green that slopes back to front.
2 is a longer par 4. Dogleg right. Very flat. Again. You cannot miss right.
3 is a longer par 3. The par 3s in general are great challenges and pretty long. You have to carry a natural waste area with water. There is a creek left. And the natural area moves around to the right as well.
4 is a medium length sharper dogleg right. It helps t have played before to know how much to cut off. The bunker through the fairway is reachable. And there is water right.
5 is the first dogleg left. Aim over or just inside the small mounds on the left. The green is huge. But slopes off on all sides and is a tough up and down.
6 is a dogleg right par 5. Keep your tee shot left of middle so the trees don’t block you out. Unless you are a really long hitter. Lay up short of the pond. You’ll have around 115 yards at that point. And do not go over the pin. This is an extremely steep multi tiered green.
7 is a medium length dogleg left par 4. The fairway is pretty tight. And there is a small creek left. This fairway is really hard for me to hit personally. The green is huge and slopes left to right. A back right pin location is near impossible to get the ball to
8 is a longer par 3. But there isn’t a lot of trouble to contend with.
9 is the first mountain hole. A short par 4 that plays steeply up a hill and slopes right to left. The green is really wide. But not very deep. And a creek fronts the left half of the green.
10 is an awesome mountain par 5. Slightly downhill tee shot to a fairway that slopes really hard right to left. You may need to hit your ball up the mound on the right and let it feed back down to the fairway. Bc hitting the middle of the fairway sometimes kicks it in the left rough. Then a downhill layup shot that gets tight at about 100 yards out. Then a steep uphill approach to a deep but very narrow green. After your tee shot, left is absolute death in this hole.
11 is mid length par 3. Tee shot is over a small valley to a huge green. There is a huge different in a front and back pin here.
12 is a shot dogleg left par 4. Downhill tee shot with less than driver. You want to hit it about 200 yards. The dogleg is sharp and late. So you can get blocked out by the left trees if you’re not far enough.
13 is a slight dogleg left par 4. Aim over the last bunker on the left. You can’t go right. And the approach plays downhill. Do not go long.
14 is a medium length par 4. It is one of the most open holes on the course. It is another huge green. With a lot of slope. And a back right hole location is really hard to get to.
15 is a shorter par 4 and a layup of the tee for most. There is a bunker on the left and a small creek in front of the green. Hit about a 200 yard shot out to the right and you’ll have a good look at one the flatter greens in the course.
16 is another longer par 3. You must carry a natural area. A big green with bunkers left and right. Like most par 3s here. It’s a longer shot and a tough par.
17 is a longer par 5. Slightly uphill at the end. The green is narrow and slopes from back to front.
18 is a longer par 4. Slightly downhill tee shot and back uphill to the green. A longer tougher finishing hole. It seems tight off the tee box. But it opens up once you get out of the chute of trees.
One of my favorites
Still one of my favorites layouts. Still in great shape. The greens have came around from earlier this spring and are now smooth and fast. A fun layout with beautiful scenery. A very friendly staff. Just one of my favorites courses anywhere. I’d be a member if I lived there. You need to know going in. It’s going to be busy. And pace of play is going to be an issue. Especially on weekends. Don’t expect 4 hours. Also, like every course the prices have increased over the last 3 years are so. And it’s now right at 100 a round during the high season. However, the good far outweighs the bad. And I’d go back tomorrow if I could.
Love this place
This is one of my favorite courses that I get the chance to play. If I lived closer I’d play it ever week. It’s still early in the season so the greens are not in great shape yet. They are still slow. Sandy and bumpy. The rest of the course is in good shape for the most part. 2 fairway. 3 approach and a small part of 10 fairway sustained some flood damage from Hurricane Helene that has not healed up yet. Other than that the tees and fairways were in good shape. The pace of play on a weekday morning was fantastic. But it can be really slow on the weekends. Right now it’s $75 a round during the week. Which is a bit high in my opinion. But it’s the only public golf option around. The staff is outstanding. Very friendly. And the grounds staff was working hard. The layout and scenery around the course is outstanding and the over all feel of the course is awesome. It’s worth paying a few extra bucks.
One of the best
Boone Golf Club is one of my favorite rounds every time I play. I have managed to play there 4 times this season. And I could play it daily and still really enjoy myself. It’s a great player friendly layout with challenging par 3s. Challenging greens and mostly open holes. The course is in really good shape. And the staff is wonderful. We did have one snafu that’s never happened before. We were the last morning tee time (double tee). And due to the snack bar being backed up at the turn they sent two groups from the afternoon dog fight off of 10 in front of us which caused us to get backed up. It was no huge deal in the long run and it was still a great round.
Excellent Public Golf
Boone Golf Club is about the only game in town when it comes to public golf in the area. But it is very good public golf. The course is always in really good shape especially for the amount of play it gets. The layout is outstanding. And the staff is friendly. The course simply never disappoints. I will say that the weekends are very busy. They double tee. And unless you get an early tee time. You should expect 4.5 hour round or slightly more. That pace of play is not for everyone. But it is what it is. It’s a fun course. And won’t beat you up too bad if you’re not hitting it great. Overall, it’s a great play despite the rising rates over the years. And I’d play it more often if I lived closer.
Early Season Round
I get up to Boone a couple of times each year. The layout and course are one of my favorites. Just a great feel to it. A fun challenging but not overly penal course. This was the earliest in the golf season I have ever gone. The tees, fairway, and rough were in really good shape. Just like they are later in the year. The greens were not as good as the usually are. I guess they had not had time to grow in. And they were much slower and bumpier than normal later in the season. The bunkers were also still covered and not in play. All in all still a great round. And if you give it a month those greens will be much smoother and faster. Can’t wait to go back in June!
Fair at best
The only reason I did not put one star is due to the condition of the course. It is absolutely beautiful, however management ruins it. The management main tactic is to print money here. This means expect sometimes 5 hour rounds of golf and lots of waiting. We got started on #10 and finished the back nine in 1 hour and 45 minutes. We made the turn and saw 5 groups waiting to tee off. Mix this with 30% of the players walking and you have a recipe for disaster. Having 3 foursomes eliminate the thought of a bunch of Patrick Cantlays out there. If you have lots of time and love slow paced golf, this is for you.
Still great
I reviewed this course not too long ago and not much has changed. Great course, great layout, great conditions, great staff. The price is a little high on the weekends. And it’s packed so the pace is never great on Saturday. But it’s one of the best public courses around. Well worth the 2 hour drive to get there a time or 2 a year
Still one of my favorites
I look forward to the chance to get to Boone and play at Boone Golf Club all spring. It is one of my favorite courses to play. The layout is very fun to play. It is pretty forgiving if you’re not hitting it straight. It’s really not a mountain course except for holes 10 and 11. The front especially is very flat. Every time I have played there the course has been in really good shape. Today was not the best, there were some weeds in 4 fairway and a couple tee boxes. But it was still really good. The greens are super. Very smooth and pretty quick. Pace of play can be an issue. There is not a lot of public golf in the area. So prices are high. And it’s packed on the weekends. Expect a 4,5-5 hour round. However, today was the first time I’d been there that wasn’t a Saturday and it wasn’t quiet as crowded. And the pace was just under 4 hours. You don’t want to be in a rush on this course anyway. Enjoy the beautiful conditions and views.
1 is a medium length par 4 with a downhill tee shot. Front the 2 back tee boxes it doglegs right around a group of small trees. A small stream fronts a very large green that slopes hard from back to front.
2 is a longer dogleg right par 4. Avoid the sand on the right of the fairway and right of the green
3 is a tough par 3. Longer than most you must hit over a natural wetlands area and hit the green.
4 is a dogleg right par 4. Cut off as much as you can for a much shorter 2nd shot. Any approach that misses right will bounce into a small creek
5 is a dogleg left par 4. Aim over the mound on the left. Huge green with a tough up and down.
6 is a long dogleg right par 5. You must lay up short of a large pond and then carry it. Big green slopes very steeply from back to front. You do not want to go long.
7 is a dogleg left par 4. This fairway is pretty tight. I hit it today. But usually do not. Approach to a green that slopes left to right.
8 is a long par 3. The tee box was moved up today and it was 170. But I’ve played it as long as 200 from the white tees. Not a lot of trouble. But a long shot.
9 is a short par 4 up the hill. The fairway slopes pretty hard from right to left. The green is pretty shallow. And there is a creek/ditch right in front of most of the green.
10 is a roller coaster par 5. The fairway slopes HARD right to left. Slightly downhill tee shot. Then layup further downhill. Then a steep uphill approach to a very narrow green.
11 is a medium length par 3 basically over a valley. Huge green depth wise. Make sure you know where the pin is.
12 is a shorter par 4 but it doglegs hard left about 100 yards from the green. Need a tee shot of about 200 yards.
13 is a fun par 4. Aim over the left hand fairway trap for best position. Approach downhill do not go over the green.
14 is a wide open par 4 with a downhill tee shot. Very open beautiful hole
15 is a short par 4 with a creek right in front of the green and a bunker that eats up half the fairway about 100 yards from the green.
16 is a medium length par 3. Over a natural wetland. Very similar to hole 3 but the angle is more to the right where as 3 the angle is left.
17 is a shorter par 4 with an uphill approach. Reachable in 2. But very narrow green to hit.
18 is a beautiful hole. Long par 4. Downhill tee shot. Back uphill to the green with a pond on the left.
All in all a really fun place to play. I highly recommend it.
Fall Break
Getting to the end of the season and course is showing a bit of wear and tear. Greens still excellent, quick as always, but tees had just been plugged and fairways were shaggy. We live in the middle of the state and try to make a day trip up to Boone 3-4 times a year for a meal, some quick shopping and a round of golf. The biggest problem with Boone GC is they try to get too many players on the course, and with minimal effort to use a ranger to keep things moving, you are almost always guaranteed a 4:30 - 5 hour round. Definitely detracts from the experience of playing a fun course. Players have been complaining about slow play here for years so I don’t think they really care, but it would be nice if speed of play could be improved. I guess nothing will happen unless people stay away.
A great course with exceptional staff
Course can be busy at peak demand times, but the staff is excellent at getting players through the holes. Frost can create delays for early starts. Pace is faster as day moves on- I recommend later tee times to compensate.
Boone in Oct
Great shape, flags well marked, challenging holes. Fun course to play on beautiful sunny fall day. Hope I can come back to NC to play it again. Pace was slow due to two groups ahead of us.
Oct Mountain Golf Gem
Fantastic course and perfect time of year in the mountains of NC
Fun course
Conditions were excellent. Greens were smooth and fast. It is a fun layout with fairly challenging greens. Put the ball in the wrong spot on the green and you will have to earn that two putt. I would definitely recommend playing the course if you are in the Boone area.
Slow, slow, slow
Do not expect a 4 hour round at this course. They allow walking the course and we took 4:55 for 18 holes. What was really, really annoying is being on the tee box of #12 with three groups ahead of you on that hole and the GPS computer warns you that you are 25 minutes behind and if you don’t speed up, you’ll be asked to skip a hole to get back in position. Too many warnings and advisories kept coming up on the very over programmed computer including a speed warning of doing 4 mph in a 10 mph zone. Very, very frustrating to say the least. Also, cart shut down three times in areas with no cart signs in place. Yardages from GPS were very helpful and could speed up play except for slow walkers in front of riding carts holding everything up. Please, please have rangers work on slow groups that fall out of position and reprogram the computers to reduce all the distractions.
