Ambassador at Hickory Valley Golf Club
About
Hickory Valley Golf Club boasts two 18-hole, regulation-length courses, named the Ambassador and the Presidential. The Ambassador Course is the shorter of the two at 6,450 yards but it still offers a fair test. The classic layout is routed through towering hardwoods forests that stretch to over 70 feet high. The tall hickory trees loom over the fairways. The small greens are sloped back to front, presenting a challenge for even the most seasoned players. Water hazards come into play on several holes and there are a few tricky doglegs to contend with. The bunkering is minimal but the abundant trees will be enough to keep you on your toes. The golf course has some challenging holes but it's not overly punishing for the high handicapper.

First time
Great day. Snack bar was closed and clubhouse is not easily accessible for food and drinks.
Good variety of course layout
I played a late Saturday afternoon round with good weather. Course wasn't busy and played alone most of the round. It was my second time at the course. I wanted to see if I enjoyed it more knowing the layout better.
Course conditions were average. Nothing to complain about, nor get excited about. The greens were slow and needed locals to do a better job fixing their divots. The sand was nicely raked, an indicator to me whether the club cares for the course and visited the beach twice this day. I've not played here often even though close to my home, mostly because it is a busy course (one of two they have here) and hard to get tee times sometimes.
The course was a good mix of open and woods, straight and dogwoods in both directions. Some required placing shots, others you could let if go. The course isn't very hilly, but does move with the landscape. What's odd for me is that I like holes that vary which this one has, but both times I played I came away feeling ho-hum about the round and I can't put my finger on why.
Staff was friendly and accommodating, and the locals I saw hanging around the club house this visit and my first seemed to really be enjoying themselves. The club house isn't large, but has room to hang out and watch TV or eat some grub. I didn't do either.
So overall it was a nice day of golf. Nice enough course. It doesn't stand out in my mind, but it is a fairly good course overall. Worth trying out.
Thank you so much Steve for taking the time to leave such a detailed review. We appreciate you taking the time to give us your feedback! We hope that you will come back and play again, maybe get a better feel for the courses one more time. Thank you again for the review!
Great course for the price
The course was great at a good price. We did have some very slow people in front of us, but the starter made their way out to the course a couple times to help sped things up.
Iceman - thank you for taking the time to review our course! We're glad to hear that the starter came out to speed things up! We hope to see you out again soon!
Excellent Conditions
I played the Ambassador course for the first time. Without local knowledge, I was at a bit of a disadvantage... particularly distances to hazards.
The Ambassador course is not very long, with many if the par 4 holes being in the 330 to 365 yard range. However, with dog legs, there were holes where you could not hit driver. The Ambassador has very few sand traps, but it has creeks and a pond or two so there are hazards. Additionally, there are many tree lined holes.
The course was in beautiful shape. The tees and greens were as good as I've played in the Berks/Montgomery County area. Employees were working on the course, specifically trimming low hanging tree branches on mature oaks.
Although I played as a single, playing time was still 4 hours, from 11 AM to 3 PM. I played the first 2 holes with no one in front, but from then on I had to wait to hit each shot thereafter. I would have enjoyed the round a little more had I played at a faster rate. They must have been busy earlier in the morning. I will say that I noticed senior players hitting from the forward tees.
Paved cart paths were the norm for the length of every hole. Lines were painted on each cart path to denote distance to the green. 90 degree rule was in effect.
The value using Golf Now was very good.
Tguers - what a detailed review! Thank you so much! This will benefit many golfers and hopefully convince them to give us a try! We appreciate the feedback and hope to see you back out on the course soon!
My Go Twos
I've probably played both of these courses combined close to 100 times considering I played high school golf here and I have been consistently coming back ever since. I know the courses very well but they still challenge me every time. I have to say this year the courses conditions were the best I've ever played and they really picked it up on the ambassador. I love the front nine on the Presidential and the back of the ambassador, some of my favorite holes in the area. I travel a lot to top notch courses and I always consider these courses to be among my favorites. Thanks for keeping the place beautiful and challenging. MUST PLAY!!!
Thank you Tmando for the amazing review! We're so happy to hear that you keep coming back, year after year! We're also very proud of the conditions and are glad you noticed! We look forward to having you play many more rounds with us!
Wow!!! What a nice little gem.
Having played the Presidential before, we decided to try the Ambassador. This course is in beautiful condition from tee boxes, fairways, traps and greens. It does help to play with someone familiar with the layout because there are some creeks and landing areas that you need to be aware of. I have nothing bad to say about either course at Hickory Valley. Just come out and play.
Wow Hacker! Thank you so much for the 5-star review! The course is in amazing shape! We're glad you noticed and enjoyed! We look forward to having you back again!
Hickory Valley Presidential
Very nice conditions. Greens were in excellent shape. First time playing so we (three of 3) didn't know optimum line to hit ball off some of the tees.
One golfer had Hole in One on 5th hole.
Congrats on the hole in one!!! That is amazing! WE're glad to hear you enjoyed the conditions! We hope to see you back soon!
Good course for the $$
We got a really good deal and my son and I played for a total of $24 on the Ambassador Course. The fairways were well maintained. The greens were ok but very slow. Overall the course is very tight and numerous tee boxes are right next to the previous green. We were almost hit three times. One ball struck our cart. With that being said, for the right price, the course is a good value. We played the round in just under 4 hours.
Bill - thanks for taking the time to review our course. We appreciate your feedback and hope we see you and your son back out on the course. Maybe test out the Presidential course next time?
Great Course
Absolutely beautiful. Highly recommend playing here.
Rbott - thank you for the wonderful 5-star review! We appreciate you taking the time to review our course! Come back to play us again soon!
one of the better publics in this area
Hickory Valley was a little spongy on 9/11 after the big rain the day before.. The tees and fairways were in fine shape. The greens were a bit mushy and iron shots made big marks in the green. All in all for late in the season Hickory Valley was in better shape than 90% of the publics in the area. The back 9 at Hickory Presedential boasts 4 of the hardest holes in the area..The par 4 10th, requires a really accurate and long tee shot as the fairway is slanted on an angle and trees will block you on your 2nd shot should you go right of the fairway.. The 13th hole plays like a par 5 despite being a par 4. For even a very long hitter, its a driver and 3 wood to reach. Holes 16 and 17 are long, narrow and tree lined and you score can be easily ruined on these 2 brutes.. Golf Now gave me a 17 dollar rate which really made me smile..
Thanks Bradco for the extremely detailed, great review! We did have quite a bit of rain which does affect the conditions but it sounds like you still enjoyed your round! We look forward to having you back again!
loved it
Loved the course.back nine is challenging and long.Very friendly staff.
Thank you so much for the 5-star review! We're happy to hear you loved the course and our stellar staff! We hope to see you back soon!
challenging but nice
The staff was pretty friendly and accomodating and we played on Labor Day Monday on the Presidential course. We had tee times at 8:40 and I don't know if we lucked out but it seemed we were playing at a country club. No one behind us and no one in front of us. Our foursome finished in less than 4 hours. Had an enjoyable time, and we had a high handicapper in our foursome but he said it was the best day of golf he had. The course is pretty challenging with its sand, water and long par 4's that seem to always dog leg right! (lol I naturally draw my ball so it started to annoy me haha) All in all we had a great day and definitely will come back. Thanks hickory valley!!
Thank RonDac for the amazing 5-star review! We're so pleased to hear that you had a great day of golf with us! We hope to see all 4 of you back out again soon! Thanks again for the review!
Great Course
Third time playing here and I will return very soon. I'm a 18 handicap played from the white tees and enjoyed the round. The course is in very good condition and a bargain when booked through GolfNow.
John - thank you for taking the time to review our course! We're so happy that you've returned! We look forward to seeing you back out on the courses again!
I will be back for more!
It was my first time playing there and loved it! Hickory Valley has two great courses in it's 36 hole layout. I will be back to play more. I wish I had learned about this course sooner.
TKramer - we're so happy to hear you had such a great first experience! We obviously wish you had found us sooner as well but at least you found us now! We look forward to seeing you out on the courses often!
Tight, tight , tight!
I enjoyed the course, Some of the holes were extremely tight, with lots of trees and playing from the back tees you have to hit out of several chutes. But the greens, fairways and tees were all nicely manicured and though it's not a long course all the trees make it challenging. I would definitely play again.
Shagbby - thank you so much for taking the time to give us a great review! We're glad you enjoyed your round with us and we hope to see you back again soon!
Great Course
Worth the money. Course is in great shape. Large greens
Thanks Admreish for the great review! We hope to see you back sooner than later!
How much is it ?!?!?!?!?!?!???????????
First I must say that this place is nice, If you like to give money away.. 2 courses to choose from, 1 course no better then the other,
The money you pay is a little steep, But it`s Sunday,, it`s golf , what are you gonna do. But for the price you pay, they should have better carts, the carts they have are GARBAGE!!! Even the guys ( starters ) say so, But what really got me was , At the turn I went into the clubhouse for a drink , I grabbed a Arnold Palmer ice tea , The can is marked big red numbers 99 cents, When I went to pay for it , It was $2.50, What the heck, A 1 hundred and fifty percent markup ( with that kind of markup they should buy carts ), When I asked the lady , she said that's the price, nothing I can do,,,,,, Is this a loud by law?? This place really has a market on the I don`t care about the CUSTOMER kind of thing, they charge a lot of money to play, They should give the player a small bucket of balls to hit to warm up, but they don`t according to the starters they told me the big boss just wants he money, Well I don`t think I`m telling my friends about this place, Sorry Hickory Valley YOUR JUST NOT WORTH IT!!!!!!
SpikeJr - we're sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your round with us. We do care about our customers and strive for excellent customer service. Unfortunately, in the case of the beverage, she has to charge the amount she is told. We hope you give us another chance! Thank you for your review.
nice course, but poorly marked
nice course, but poorly marked - very hard to find distances - distances are on sprinkler heads, but it was hard to find them
Thank you BSeidal for taking the time to let us know how you feel about the distances. We appreciate your feedback and will pass these concerns along to the appropriate people. Thank you again!
good condition but oh those greens
We found the condition to be good but the greens were monsters. We did not have one level put on 18 holes.I can see some challenging pin positions but all of them?
SMarkacs - we're sorry to hear you found all of our pin positions challenging. We really appreciate your feedback and will pass this along to the appropriate parties. We do hope to see you back on the course sometime and thank you for your review.
Great Value for nice course.
Played in afternoon, probably not a good idea from the start. This course must get so much traffic, by the time I went off, could not get a clear putting line without multiple clearly defined footprints. Took a lot of luck to make any putts. Pace was horrible. The waiting started on the first tee. Course has a 4.5 hr round expectation so management doesn't project the urgency to help out the faster playing groups. Literally had 3 groups who were playing behind us leave the course after 14 holes because the constant waiting was just not fun. Will go back but probably not too often..
AC - thank you for taking the time to review our course. Weekends are our busiest times, hands down, so we realize pace of play is always going to be an issue. We really appreciate your feedback and letting us know about your experience. We will pass this information along and we hope to see you back eventually. Thanks again.
