Always a good time - liked the old trees on the front though
Always enjoy playing here and kiss the trees on the front nine visually and to orient certain shots. Drainage was tough that day as it has been very wet with melting snow and rain which is normal this time of year tondeal with these things if one can golf at all. It is gravy to be able to golf now here.
The greens need to be rolled and better cared for in the main season and the course needs better sand quality and quantity. For good value in golf and a relaxing and casual round, this is where I go!
customer service
My group played Sunset last month and had a great time. However, yesterday on the way there I got a call from guy in our group who said the course was closed due to flooding, and they had given him 2 weekday passes to account for our pre-paid Golfnow reservation. I told him there should be three. The pro-shop wanted me to prove that to get the 3rd pass. So, I drove there and showed them on the computer screen, then the manager walks in and ask what is going on. He says NO, we don't give passes, and to take it up with Golfnow. Fine, but thanks for having me drive out here.
Next, I informed him that recently Springwood was closed and they had called us to tell us the day before. Golfnow also called us, which is nice and great customer service. Today whilst getting my refund, Golfnow said they can only call if the course informs them. Sunset manager also said they will not call people on the tee-sheet. Poor customer service I told him. oh well, just have people drive over an hour round trip only to find the course closed.
The course I grew up on
I grew up playing Sunset so I have a certain soft spot for the course. The front 9 has recently gone through some big changes by having a majority of the trees taken out because of HIA. It gave it a new course feel while still feeling somewhat familiar. The front plays like more of a links style course now with almost no trees. The new views are incredible! Having lost my points of reference on many of the holes made it interesting. I definitely like the changes and playing it again will remove any doubts on where to hit. Conditions were pretty good for a municipal course. You could tell some of the changes were newer, but I think they'll be fine in a season or two. The greens were rolling true! If you haven't played Sunset or just haven't played it recently, I definitely recommend it. A fun experience!
5 1/2 hour tour
This was crazy. It was absolutely absurd. It took myself and my playing parnter 5 1/2 hours to play on a Thursday afternoon. It was so backed up. There was no ranger to keep pace of play. The 18th green was some sort of make shift circle in the fairway. After the round we went into the lounge to get a drink and the 3 employees on duty ignored us like we were invisible. Never ever go back!!
FAA forced renovation
Renovation coming along nicely. Don't miss some of those trees! Greens real nice, and fast.
Great views
Always enjoy playing at Sunset. Great views, beautiful course, challenging holes all make for a fun round of golf!
Nice course for the money
I would give the course a higher rating if it wasn't for the slow pace of play. We had a foursome with an extra cart two women and a dog causing play to back up several holes. They had no golf etiquette. They were shouting back and forth the whole time we were next to them. The staff allowed us to replay the front nine at the turn since they stopped for 15 minutes to eat lunch then proceeded to jump in front of us when we were ready to make the turn. Other than that it was a nice course
Renovated
A lot of the existing tree have been taken out on the front 9. At first I didn't like that, but now think that it may help the course in the long run.
Front 9 under heavy construction
Front 9 was under construction. Makeshift hole signs/markers. I could not even locate some of the tee boxes! Every hole had maintenance personnel around. Not just staff, but contractors who did not respect players. I expected some inconvenience, but the front 9 was not playable and should not have been advertised as such. Back 9 resembled a golf course.
Definitely NOT worth full price. I wouldn't go back even with a hot deal.
Construction
Great course in a beautiful setting- only drawback at this time is course renovation. Being so close to the Harrisburg Internationals Airport, the FAA made the course remove a great deal of mature trees from the course. Course is being seriously renovated as a result.
Interesting course
While under construction, this course still offers a challenge for any avid golfer.
Course under construction
I have always enjoyed playing at Sunset; however, due to construction conditions were not the best. This course will be awesome once the construction is completed!!
I would still recommend this course even under construction. The staff is friendly, I would just make certain to get a good deal to make it worth while.
Course under construction
Sunset is one of my favorite courses in south central PA. It has great character, and they keep it in good condition. Unfortunately, right now the course is having some renovations done. There are temporary tees, roped off construction areas, and areas of vehicle travel damage.
The greens, bunkers, and most of the fairways are still in very nice condition. But for now, without the Hot Deal I got from Golf Now, it would not have been a good value.
Work in progress
First let me say the greens are great. FAA required course to remove trees so front nine is a bit crazy but well worth it.
very scenic course
Very nice course ,has 3 temporary tee areas under construction. Still is worth it to play number 10 is very high up dog leg right a lot of fun to play.
terrible
Was not aware that the first nine was under major renovations. hundreds of trees down, temporary tees, piles of dirt. What a mess. Sign at clubhouse says reduced rates because of construction. paid $20 + golfnow. Not worth it!
govt. made them cut all the trees!!!!
hopefully, subset can figure out how to make a success out of the current situation. from what i was told the govt. made them cut all of the trees due to the airport. makes not sense to anyone that i spoke with about it. it looked like a tornado or bomb hit. some holes closed and the course was entirely unrecognizable. anyway, always loved the course and hope they can figure it out. perhaps, now a links style course.
Decent Course for a Decent Price
I played Sunset Golf Course for the first time on a 'Hot Deals' around noon on a very hot day. I was pair up with another single and twosome, who also booked on Golf Now.
The course was laid out in a pretty good fashion, subtle and sharp dog legs, long downhill par 3s and one short par 3 to an elevated green.
One hole had a 'temporary green' due to some work - in other words, the flag was in the middle of the fairway in front of the green on a Par 5. This was pretty frustrating, so we played that as long as you hit the flagstick 'holder' in the ground, you holed out.
Hole 10 as you begin the back nine is a 150 ft downhill tee shot to a sharp dogleg right. If you place your tee shot 200-220 straight out, you have a clear shot to a massive green. If you hit a shorter club, keep it on the left side of the fairway, and you can play a straight or slight fade into the green... or punch it out and have it roll on.
The course was pretty fun for the first time, but it's not on my 'favorites' list. I would play there again for the $10 Hot Deal though!
