#1 tee looking straight down fairway to the green Photo submitted by BigJimSportSlam on 07/08/2013
Unique layout
Love the layout with ups & downs everywhere. Greens & fairways in good shape. Tee boxes in terrible shape. Some cart paths need big time attention. Parking lots also need some work. Not a good course for beginners.
On Tilt
This is an unusual course and be ready for some unusual bounces. It is a fun course with a good mix of holes, and the first course I've played with 6 (!) par 5s.
While there are trees on the course if you do an adequate job controlling your tee shots they are out of the way. But you can stripe a drive down the middle and either roll out into the rough with steeply titled fairways, or be in the middle with the ball well above or below your feet. It's like the built the course on rock outcroppings.
The greens were in good shape but inconsistent with some fast and others slow. Not sure why since they all looked similar. And some tee boxes are in terrible shape, but that's typical for this time of year except at very expensive courses.
Overall, it's an excellent value and worth playing simply for the experience.
Nice layout
Tee boxes need a lot of work Greens & fairways great.
Fun day!
Galen Hall will humble you while amusing you. Rolling and tumbling from hole one through 18, you may be laughing or crying, but never yawning. A very tough demanding course which you will never forget! I love it!!!
Disappointed
This is one of several courses that I have played, this year. It is, by far, in the worst condition of any. I have played here, before, and have loved this course, but was truly disappointed, this time. The tee boxes are in very poor condition, with a lot of mud and bare spots. The fairways have much of the same, in many areas. I have played.much better maintained courses, with lower greens fees. This course was not worth the weekend rate that I played at. I won’t be playing here, again, this season. Hopefully, next season it is in better condition.
5-somes?
Not sure why they would allow 2 groups of 5 out on a Saturday morning.....
Also, $50 for aerated greens is a bit steep. I understand that weather has hit the course hard and they've done what they can to maintain it, but the price is too much for the shape the course is in.
tougher than rating
Quick greens, which is OK. Holes cut on sidehills makes it very difficult. Putted off one green. 200 yard straight drive and the ball is above your feet, downhill, uphill, below your feet. All fun , but way harder than course rating. Fairways and greens nice.
Same as before
Played here2 years ago for the first time. Had to look at my review to try to remember something other then the first 2holes and the moat hole. My review will be the same as before, it’s just ok.
I live almost an hour and a half from GH. Got a deal before and got another for today. Booked as a single player, paired up with 2 guys named mark, or Marc, not sure. It was easy for me to remember. We played on a Saturday just before noon and finished at 3:45. Even waiting a few times, we came in under 4 hours.
The course has some wear on it. It’s been hot and we had some rain overnight. Elevation changes and some views are cool, but other then the moat, nothing really stands out for me. A lot of holes remind me of a lot of other holes I’ve played in my area. I played the white tees at around 5900, tips are just under 6300. It’s a playable course that if I lived local, I’d be ok with playing a couple times a year. I will not say I’ll never go back, but the deal would have to be perfect for me
One last thing, from a previous review, the 7th green is small, but I believe the 9th at Loch Narin is the smallest green I’ve EVER seen.
When you HOT, you HOT, but these ladies were not
Course in FABULOUS shape...everything super except whoevee put the cup placement in on #1 failed to do it correctly. The one side of cup level was about 1/8 " deep while on other side of cup was like 3" deep which made it impossible to get the ball into the hole from certain spots.Everyone complained. Also a supposed regular 4 some of women held up the course hacking all over and running back forgetting clubs, etc. Need someone to monitor these old bags and foreigners and tell them to let people through. This course is too hard for hacks, especially in 95 degree weather.
The Galen Hall
Still fun to play the tough old Mt.
Started here in the 1970's and still love playing here!
Okay play on a hot day
Overall a fun day but very hot. Course is quite hilly .
Old school charm
Great golf course. Tons of character. Few tee boxes need some TLC but greens and fairways were great. Tillinghast on a budget. Drove 75 minutes and will do it again in a few weeks. Old school charm, great layout. Fun. How golf should be.
Hidden PA Gem
This was my first time playing this course. What an absolute gem. Each hole has such unique character. There are a few odd holes, like #2 which definitely takes some local knowledge. The course was practically empty. Our foursome played in about 3.5 hours. The tee boxes and bunkers are a little rough. Fairways were great and the greens were very good. Greens are kind of small (#7 might be the smallest green I’ve ever seen). Lots of slope on the greens. This is very fun golf course. Our group will definitely be back.
Lacks amenities and poor management
They were obviously catering to their members at our expense on the day we played this course. Told us there were 10 groups of team play behind us and we had better keep moving before we got started. They should have mentioned this when the tee time was reserved. We played the round in 4 hours and were feeling pushed at every tee. The reason was the group behind us either teed from the red tees or the beginning of the fairway the entire round. I have been playing golf for 40 years and never experienced anything like this. No ball washers, few trash receptacles and no portable toilets on the entire course and the 10th hole is nowhere near the club house. The course is in need of a lot of maintenance that should have been done years ago. Will definitely not play this course again..
As I have said before, everything here is great, except most players are hacks (least when I was there)...course is a challenge and beautiful layout except the pace of play is way too slow. Why do duffers have to take 3 practice swings and take 15 minutes to putt for their 8's and 9's?
Good course, way overbooked
The course was well kept and provided a great challenge. However, the staff at GH overbooked WAY too much on the tee times today. They should be ashamed at how slow the play was due to how many people they booked tee times for. We would get to a tee box and have to wait up to 10 minutes before we could play through. Eventually there would three groups at one tee box waiting to tee off. This was extremely frustrating. Won’t play here again because of this.
Amazing mountain golf
You'll come for the moat hole but will remember everything else. Not saying the moat under delivers but more that the rest of the place over delivers. Front has a ton of elevation changes and small greens, back is more punitive. Great place.
