Monte Cristo Golf & Country Club
About
Until the new Los Lagos club opened recently, Monte Cristo, previously known as Palacio, was the only 18-hole course in Edinburg. The name of the game here is dealing with the wind, which seems to always blow from the Gulf and makes the course much more difficult.
Getting there : Exit Monte Cristo off 281 south, then turn left and drive 2.5 miles to the course.

Saturday Twilight
Was lucky to play after a tournament finished up. Played by myself in just 2 hours and 25 minutes. Nobody in front or behind me. It was $27 for twilight with a cart. Front 9 is surrounded by homes but not overly tight. Back 9 has some good challenges up front but opens up down the stretch. Greens were dormant but in good condition. Fairways in pretty good condition as well. Look forward to my next round here.
Fun
Fun place to place. Course is perfect for our golf game. People are friendly. Pace of play is usually great. Fairways require planning and some strategic shots. Greens are fair and smooth. Fairways are dry in places but it is February. Love the grass bunkers, so much easier to play out out. Shorter holes makes for better scores. Residents are friendly too, as is the staff. The new carts are great. Have played I think, ten times and have booked more.
Ball washers
There is only one functional ball washer on the entire course. Two water stations at the only toilet stations are not enough when the temperature is above 75.
south Texas Golf
One of the better courses in the Rio Grande Valley!
Great course
Its challenging and yet fun good courze to improve your golf skills water hazards are a great challenge ill be back
Great Value
The course was in great condition and the staff very helpful. Will go back.
Play
Geat course. Best course I have played in the Valley
Fun Round.
Interesting layout for flat terrain with few trees and relatively wide open fairways but some of the holes have utilized trees strategically and some have water hazards that do sneak up on you. Green though with their winter brown were very fast and smooth and were fair to putt. Rough and fairways were very short and all traps on course are grass traps. The back nine is 4 par 3's, 2 par 4's and 3 par 5's which is different but interesting. I am going to play the course again for sure.
Monte Cristo Golf & CC
The course was very laid back. No starter. The fairways and green were in pretty good shape. No ball washers at the tee blocks. No beverage cart out on the course. It was a good value for what we payed through Golf Now. Just under $20 for 18 holes with cart. We probably would play it again that that price.
Fun course
Generous fairways, unique layout on back nine with 3 par 3's in 4 holes and ending with 2 par 5's. Senior tee boxes make for short iron or wedges into greens.
No club rentals
Staff was unfriendly and uncooperative, said he couldn't find my reservation and then miraculously found it once the confirmation email was shown to him. As I'm checking in with two friends a colleague says we're going to need to rent clubs this same staff member gave a blank stare and didn't respond. After, which I requested the same and he stated with a dumbfounded look " we don't rent clubs" Seriously, is this the only golf course in america that doesn't rent clubs. Icing on the cake is when I called golf now the supervisor denied a refund! WOW
MCCGC review
Excellent golf course, challenged with trees water and distance.
Great course
Always a go to place for male bonding
Good
Good golf course green are excellent golf course a little narrow a lot of out bounce
long grass
Greens were really consistent and well kept. Old sand traps are just grass now. Rough and fringe were really long with tons of native grass. Fairways were straight, course not too challenging. Good for a confidence building round of golf. Take extra balls. I had to drop balls in the fairway because the grass was long in areas and couldnt see ball when hitting. Good luck finding ur ball in the rough, it is way too long. Just drop a new one.
Under water!
The good:
Greens were in amazing A+ shape and the tee boxes were dry. An employee was in the pro shop at 7:00am for our 7:15 tee time.
The bad:
After recent heavy rains, several holes were under water and in reality they should've closed the golf course for a couple of days while they dried it out. Fairways are not in great shape but I've seen much, much worse. The mosquitoes were the thickest I've ever seen anywhere.
Review:
The course is an easier type of South Texas setup although a couple of the holes have trees directly in the middle of the fairway a little short of the landing area. It's very flat which I guess explains their drainage problems and most holes are straight ahead with very wide fairways. There were several maintenance guys running around so that's a positive. At their usual $38 green fee I don't think it would be worth a round at all. This is more like a $20-25 course.
Bad course
The course was not that great. Fairways didn't look like fairways. Grass was way to tall. Lost pretty much any ball on the fairway. There are no bunkers with sand they are covered with grass. Mosquitos are all over the course. Got eaten up throughout the course especially on hole 12-14. Greens were ok not the best but smooth enough.
Also had a tee time at 7am and nobody was there to work. The grounds workers said they come in at 8 so if you plan on catching a round early you may be waiting for awhile.
Great Time
I took advantage of a special price early in the morning on a week day. There were only a few golfers out this early although it began to fill up later. Pace of play was easy and relaxing. Weather here in South Texas is wonderful. It is early December and although it was a bit overcast the temperature was in the low seventies and not too humid. The course was in very good shape. Iron shots were easy to hit off of thick, smooth fairways, and the greens were smooth and well paced. It was an enjoyable experience for me and my playing partner. Staff was friendly and quick to get us out on the course.
