The Grizzly Golf & Social Lodge - Grizzly Course
About
The Grizzly Course is a collaboration between Jack Nicklaus and Desmond Muirhead. Since opening in 1972, this challenging layout has been host to numerous PGA, LPGA, and Senior PGA events. The golf course features long, curvy fairways lined with towering trees and there are strategically placed bunkers throughout. The three final holes feature water hazards, which are also accompanied by a difficult array of bunkers. It offers a fair amount of difficult holes but overall the course is playable for a range of skill levels, which is why it is an appealing layout for tournaments. In addition to the two courses, the Golf Center also boasts an 11,000-square foot putting green and an Academy Course with four championship holes.
Also known as The City of Mason Golf Center - Grizzly Course.

stacked up on fairway! #Grizzly Photo submitted by todski26 on 11/12/2012
Very Slow 2nd 9 holes
First nine great. Threesome played in 1 hour 40 minutes. Second nine extremely slow. When we made the turn 3 foursomes were teeing off their first nine in front of us. Second nine close to 3 hours. If you're going to start on both nines you need better tee time planning!
Good to Excellent Condition !!
This course is much improved! When we played it late last summer it was in average condition at best. Now nine months later it is in good to excellent condition! We'll play it again, maybe as son as this week!
Great tones in Ohio
Very good course, well worth the money. Layout is great for everyday golfer. Check out the Snack Shack and say Hi to Abbey. Looking forward to playing there again on next trip.
Great Value
I played this course a few weeks ago early in the morning and really enjoyed it. The course was a little wet from rain the previous night but there was no standing water and the greens were still somewhat firm for the amount of rain they received. The course is challenging from all tee boxes and will provide a fun round as for any level of golfer.
Grizzly review
The course was in excellent condition, except for some patches of grass on the green that makes the speed inconsistent.
Needs a good mowing
This would be a great course if it were well maintained. But it isn't. I understand it has rained a lot lately, but that's no excuse for letting the bunkers go and letting the tee boxes grow as deep as the rough on some courses. The rough was more than ankle deep in most places, and the greens were shaggy and slow too. I find the layout with 6 each of par threes, fours, and fives interesting. If Jack Nicklaus could see it now, he'd make them take his name off it.
I re-played it today and found it to be in super shape. Recommended.
Great early season conditions
Fun course. This was my first time and I found the layout to be somewhere between an easy, open course and a challenging, tighter course. Good use of hazards. Excellent course for players of all ability levels.
More value than money!
$29 to play 18 and ride? On a nice course? I'll be back. A lot.
Good course layout, greens in good shape
This is a nice course with an excellent layout. Greens are decent, not too fast. Some of the course maintenance was less than stellar, but overall a good golf experience.
Slow play
There was a 45 min frost delay not told to us by the proshop, until we went to the tees the starter informed us we were about three groups back. After we tee off there was a ten minute wait on every tee. Then we made the turn and a twosome jumped in front of us (as if it wasn't slow enough) they said they were just playing nine, the front was backed up so they decided to get in our way. After that it seemed like once again at least a ten minute wait every hole. No marshals and a five hour and fifteen minute round, frustrating
Poor pace of play just too much
I have played this course 30+ times. In the last year pace of play has gotten unbearable. Yesterday we left after 10 holes, and 3:45. Sadly won't be returning any time soon. Course is really decent, great staff, and a good value, but pace of play offsets all of that.
Not bad for price.
Got great deal for 2 on week day. Greens have been recently aerated as another review states. Course conditions were as usual not horrible but not amazing at this course. Staff very friendly. No rangers on course though. Played behind group that was very very slow on front 9. Never let us play through. They were playing a scramble and hitting multiple shots each taking forever. Lucky to pass them at the turn. I'm not a scratch by any means but a lot of hacks and jerks that are way to slow seem to always be out at this course. Everyone I've ever played with including myself enjoys the layout. Staff is friendly. Not bad if you get a decent deal but be prepared wait a lot on tees any day.
nice track no aerification alert
tee time on golf now.no aerification alert on posting.Greens were terrible.Would never of played if we knew that. The saving of $2 made a bad day.ALWAYS CALL BECAUSE THE WON'T POST aerification alert!!!!!!I was embarrassed when me and my clients got to the 1st green after telling them how good the greens roll.
Be good...be very good
I hit in the low 90s. My friends hit in the low 90s. If you hit above 85, you shouldn't be playing the Grizzly.
The good stuff.. the course is immaculate. From tee to green it was in fantastic shape for the amount of rain we received the night before.
The bad stuff... there are houses and condos EVERYWHERE. Who lives in a house 200 yards from a tee box? How can you enjoy your million dollar home KNOWING you could be hit at any time. I usually hit my driver well with maybe 1 or 2 drives missing the fairway. I switched to a hybrid off the tee which made for a long day on this course. Did I say there were houses everywhere? If you play the North course, it's a lot more forgiving with the real estate.
The staff was really, really nice. Super nice. We had a group of three and they put a single with us. No problem. He was a nice guy who said he hit in the low 80s, but was probably playing poorly because he was playing us. Sorry about that. OTHER players on the course... pompous is a good word to use. We had three guys playing behind us that kept hitting into us. At one point they hit a ball 8 feet from me on a fly. No FORE... nothing. I turned around and yelled FORE! I got the "get off my course" motion. The funny thing is there was a Par 3 on the next hole and we had decided to let them play through. Until then.
Two valuable lessons I learned... until I hit in the 70s, don't play any courses with houses lining every hole. And, for all golfers... if you want golf to endure, grow and prosper, don't act like a pompous elitist to other golfers.
If you don't hit in the 70s or low 80s, don't play this course. It's not for you.
Had a great time!
Played as a single but was paired up with another. A super nice young man who could drive it 300+. We hit it off from the start and just a had great time playing together on a hot breezy morning/afternoon. With his drives and my short game we'd make one heck of a player! Pace of play was a little slow as we had a couple foursomes in front of us, but they left suddenly after hole 12 and the pace pickup to perfect. The course was in good shape for as hot as it's been. We cleaned way too many of other's ball marks on the greens, but the greens rolled true.
Very disappointed in jack Nicklaus course
Course was washed out and looked as if some parking from tennis and volleyball tournaments previous week didn't help. The staff in the pro shop was rude, or trying to be funny and it didn't work. The green are so best up making a tap in would require the right bounce off an old ball mark!! Worst jack Nicklaus design course I have ever played and see why all the tours have went away from this place!! Do not play here until it gets in better condition!!
Jack is no longer affiliated with this course. He took his name off of it years ago.
Griizzly Revisted
I have not played the course in a couple of years. I always enjoyed it but in the past the pace of play was slow as they used the double wave and it to forever. We played a two some on a Friday afternoon and the pace on play was around 4 hours which was great. A few of the greens were beat up but overall the course was in good shape. They had a gentleman in a cart bringing ice water to the players which was great as it was over 90 degrees out. A great deal for the golf now price!
Great staff
Booked online. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Started on time, Starter gave us who was ahead of us and in front of them. Hot day. Saw a ranger twice on each 9 and offered water to us. Busy Sunday afternoon but we still finished in 4 hours.
This course is very green
I realy liked the whole course. The fairways were cut very short when your ball was in the fairway it was like being on a tee plus they were still very green, the bunkers were absolutely beautiful nice soft sand the rough was pretty generous not real tall also nice and green. The greens were pretty descent need golfers to start fixing there divots other then that overall great time definitely will be back.
Play oakmont and tell me which one is better.
