The 14th - a nice short par 3 with a tricky green. Photo submitted by GolferJake78 on 03/01/2019

The 17th - probably my favorite hole on the course. Photo submitted by GolferJake78 on 03/01/2019
Herndon GC
The course is in great shape... greens were rolling excellent! Thanks HGC!
Really Good Municipal Course
I played Herndon Centennial on a cold February day as a respite from this brutal Iowa winter. I was fortunate enough to be in the area for business, and met up with Virginia Golf Advisor Ben Grehan for a round at this course near Dulles Airport.
Herndon Centennial is a great value, at only $30 to walk in the offseason. I paid an additional $5 to rent a pull cart. I would love to see them update their offering to add push carts, as I learned that it is much harder to pull than push.
I really enjoyed my round of golf. I found the course to have a nice variety of short and mid length par 4s, borderline reachable par 5s and tricky par 3s. The greens were especially tricky, yet very nice for February.
The Good:
The overall course condition was great for February 27th. I was surprised how smooth and fast the greens were. They have some slope, so with a little speed, putts can get away from you. Unfortunately, I learned this on the first couple of holes, but then adjusted.
The layout was terrific too. The course does a nice job mixing up par 3s, 4s and 5s, and frequently changing direction so you're rarely playing two holes in a row in the same direction.
Finally, the green complexes are very interesting, in a good way. Most green complexes are well bunkered, but also have open areas with different slopes to allow a variety of short game shots.
The Average:
While I said the layout was terrific, I do think Herndon Centennial could benefit from some tree management. There were a few spots where they were removing trees, but I think more tree removal is needed. Holes 11-13 and 15 felt a little claustrophobic, and could benefit from just a little bit more width.
The Not So Good:
Geese! As you can see from my photo of the 17th hole, there is a flock of geese living on the course. This means goose droppings everywhere. I'm not sure if this is a year around problem, or just specific to this time of year. Geese are a problem that plague many golf courses, and where I think golf courses could benefit from allowing dogs.
Overall, there are a lot of positives with Herndon Centennial. I highly recommend it if you're in the Dulles Airport area for a fun, quick 18 hole round.
back at Herndon
Glad to be able to play golf finally after a lot of bad weather. Golf course fine except that every goose in the universe must have been on the course.
Annual Father-Son New Years Round
Each year my oldest son and I play on New Years day at a local course, we try to play a different course, and preferably a new course each time.
This year we choose Herndon Centennial. The weather was warmer than the last several years, but with all of the rain the last week or so, the course was very wet, however I could tell that the course layout is great, and have added it to a list of courses I want to play when the weather is better. The fairways are wide, and the course is not incredibly long, so for a high handicap player like myself it was a forgiving and rewarding round.
a friendly golf course
The weather was cold, but we had a round early in the morning because of the cheap price.
The staff kept checking the weather conditions and telling us. So we could play not colder than we thought.
The round ended quickly because there were no people.
The grass was very good.
We'll be back on that course.
Solid round after some heavy rain
Heavy rain the night before, but course was still in good shape. Course was obviously soft but still played well. Cart path only today and so no surprises there. Didn’t use the range but always enjoy getting to the course early to use the putting green from which you can also chip. Restaurant has some good food options and craft beers, but can be slow at times. Played the round in about 4 hours and that was with a decent stop at the turn to get food and let a group of 2 play through. Fun course and I enjoy coming out here. Fairways are in good condition but lots of leaves! Greens were also in good shape. Will be back again as long as the weather cooperates this fall/winter!
Fall vacation golf
In the middle of autumn it was wonderful to play golf far from home. Especially playing golf in a beautiful golf club with good weather, reasonable rates, friendly staff and more. Many thanks to Golfnow for the great information every time.
fun course
$7 dollar hotdogs? beer a little pricey too. finally got off the cart path after all this rain.
Eh
Not good. Not bad , just there. Very crowded. Staff does a good job on the greens, people don’t.
Nice Course
I've played this course numerous times. It is extremely forgiving, staff is friendly and the course is always in good condition. Excellent value as well.
