The 14th - a nice short par 3 with a tricky green. Photo submitted by GolferJake78 on 03/01/2019

This Course Is a Gem
The course designer, Ed Ault, has designed many municipal courses like this one but this layout is special. This parkland course features well-kept fairways, mature trees, moderate rough and sand bunkers. At par 71 and 6200 yards the course is not long but the greens are small and extremely challenging to read. If you love to drive the ball, this course is for you. If you miss the fairway, you will be penalized by trees and other obstacles but you will usually have a shot out of trouble, instead of a lost ball. Because of the small greens accurate approach shots are a must and to score you must hit your approach shots to the right part of the greens. In a perfect world, the course should be lengthened to 6600 yards and there are a few places in which the architect intended sand bunkers that are grass which should be converted to sand as originally intended by Ault.
Fallen leaves
My wife and I had an enjoyable time at the Herndon Centnenial Golf Course. But there were too much fallen leaves on the fairway.
Fun day, a bit windy, but course in great shape!
Had a 2 pm tee time, and had a great round! Very open tee sheet so we took our time getting ready before heading out. Chipped a bit and putted a bit on the putting green because these greens can be deceptively fast! Played as a 3-some in less than 4 hours, and we weren't really rushing. No problems with pace of play whatsoever. Course was in great shape! Fairways were lush, and even the rough wasn't too terrible. It played fair; if you missed your drive then you were certainly going to be penalized in the rough. Greens rolled true, but had some unprepared ball marks (customary for most Northern VA courses). Overall, course was in fantastic shape, and I will definitely be back! Played from the blues and it was very manageable. Good course run by the city of Herndon!
Great public course!
Nice layout with good conditions. Greens we're in excellent shape and you could trust your read. I will return.
Good calue
Course was in pretty good shape. The rain has definitely helped with that this summer, and they have dint a good job keeping the fairways and greens trimmed. Bunkers were a bit compact, but that is not a huge deal. Course does not play particularly long, but still poses a good challenge. For a Sunday afternoon, the pace of play was pretty quick. Played as a 4-some in less than 4 hours and did not have to wait anywhere. Rangers were making their way around the course, and were available to help and nice guys! Will be back.
One of my go-to courses
Like playing this course a lot. Forgiving if you miss a fairway here and there. Greens are will maintained. Bev cart and clubhouse/grill on the turn is a plus. Friendly staff.
Nice course!
Short course but some nice holes. Tee boxes, fairways and greens all in great shape. Rough can be thick, but that's why they call it rough!
Nice course
One of the very best municipal golf courses in the Washington metropolitan area. Top of the line grounds keeper always has the course in great shape within the context of the area's weather. With the high volume of golfers that regularly play the course it is nothing short of amazing it is in such superb condition. The greens are cut a bit long and therefore are a bit slow. My guess is this is due to the high volume of foot traffic. Played today as a twosome in 3.5 hours. The pace of play will not be that quick on the weekends. Rough was longer than usual today. Very likely due to the recent wet weather impacting the mowing schedule. Highly recommend you give this fine facility a try.
Great Shape
Course is always in great shape. Greens, fairways and bunkers are well maintained. The thick rough is the only way to protect this short course…it will probably cost you a stroke if you’re not in the fairway. I’ve played this course a few times over the past 20 years and have never had an unpleasant round…staff is always considerate.
The course layout is good, a walkable course also .
I've played the course a few times and this was the best shape I've seen it in. My only comment , not complaint was the greens were recently aerated and extremely slow . The entire course was lush and green!
Great Course
I play this course a few times a year and it never fails to amaze me with the course conditions. The fairways, bunkers and greens are always what you would expect in a course. The greens were moderate fast and rolled true. The course is short but most pins were perfectly placed to keep from going low! Will play again.
Always Fun
It may not be very long or exceedingly challenging, but this classic lay out is fun for golfers of all levels. The conditions of the fairways and greens are consistently impressive and better than many courses that are much more expensive and "renown."
Good course nestled in Herndon
Had never played here before, and had just recently heard of this course. Was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the course. For late December, the course was in great shape. There had been rain in the last couple days and so it was cart path only (most courses this time of year will be cart path only anyway), but the fairways were still in great shape. The greens still rolled pretty well and were a challenge. You had to hit your shots onto the correct level or you had a challenging putt coming up! This course had a good variety of holes, and made it challenging. The wind was pretty tricky to deal with, and so that made the short par 3s tough! Overall, we had a great time on the course, and it was pretty empty so we finished our round pretty fast (didn't officially keep time, but it was way less than 4 hours). I don't know if I'd pay the full price again, and will be looking for hot deals on GolfNow if I am to play this course again. Heard the clubhouse has great BBQ, but did not try it...will try it next time I am here!
Excellent condition
With all the rain lately the course was in excellent shape. The greens were very good and rolled nicely. Price is a little steep on a weekend morning but overall I was very happy with the conditions. Just need to take bunkers in morning if the charge is 67 with a cart
Herndon...ok
The greens had been aerified recently but the course was still in good shape other than that. The only true negative is that the tee boxes could use some work, it was tough going finding a flat lie sometimes. But the fairways were nice and the rough was fair, in that they were trimmed down enough it wasn't like an Open. I am excited to play this track again when the greens in their best shape.
Great all-around course to play again and again.
A very good run of the mill municipal golf course. Played here for the first time a couple days ago. The weather very cooperating and very good pace of play. We did our round as relatively new beginners in 3:40 while letting one or two smaller groups pass. The course is well-maintained and fairways were wide enough for a beginner like me. Never felt rush and concessions were available easily around the course. Very good value for practice and to work on skills and very forgiving to a beginner.
