The Hollows Golf Club - Lake/Road
About
Hollows Golf Club is situated in historic Hanover County, birthplace of Patrick Henry. The club boasts 27 holes of championship golf that are considered the best value in the area since the greens fess are good for the whole day, allowing you to try every hole if you wanted to. The holes are divided into three nines: Cottage, Lake, and Road, that are played in three different 18-hole combinations. The unique layouts of all three offer enough variety to appeal to players of all skill levels. The Lake/Road combination naturally features plenty of water on the front nine. The Lake nine is routed around a large lake as well as a few small ponds. The back nine, Road, is the longest of the three nines, but only by about 100 yards. There is no water but there are some tricky doglegs and strategically placed bunkers.

Great Day
The weather warmed up nicely and the course is getting into shape. Greens were just aerated so slow , sandy and bumpy. Should be ready in a couple of weeks .
Good For the Money
It’s winter so fairways were thin, greens were rolling good for the time of year. For the price the golf course was a good deal.
Wet
Rain and snow has taken it's toll on the road course. Even the cart paths are a solid mud bog. The greens and fairways are 85% but they have lost the ruffs and paths. They'll get it back in spring but I would not recommend the course now.
greens rough
even being the off season greens resembled tee box patches missing, rough worse than being ariiated fairways were in great condition and course over all qas great but had tee times backed up ontop of eachother and wouldn't move people to diffrent starting holes . overall a decent experience but qas constantly waiting to take a shot could get no flow to round
Down hill
Hardly any yardage markers; not hard to put a stake in the ground. Cart paths are like the Oregon trail. Tarps on some of the lake greens. Recently took the porta Johns off the course; might be using the savings to buy some gravel.
P.S. The men’s association think they own the place
Could be better
The course itself looked pretty nice but it was not well marked and even starting tees were not well marked. Several holes had rough areas or were damaged . Pace of play was slow.
What Hurricane
Course was wet of course after a few inches of rain but Cottage was mostly still 90 degree with the cart. Greens in good shape and true , but as more rain fell it got a bit tricky.Always a fast round here and able to practice some shots .
Nice course
We had a great weather day. The course is in pretty good shape. Some greens had a few rough spots but they were all very playable. Tees some good some not so good. They were very thin on grass. Fairways were very nice. Overall the layout is fair and forgiving. Not real long from the white tees with lots of 300-350 yard par 4's. Staff was friendly and helpful. We will return.
Great Day as usual
Love that I can play quickly. Sometimes run into some slow players but they will let you play through or you can play out in front.
Greens were wet from all the rain plus watering, so soft landing.
Staff and other players are always friendly!
Strange
The course had red pin flags in back of of greens and blue ping flags in the front of the greens. (Supposed to be the opposite.) From a distance you can not tell so go with flag color. A number of tee boxes completely closed for re-turfing so only Gold tee boxes available. (Why not close 1/2 of each box at one time??) A par 4 under repair was turned into a par 3 indicated by notices printed on regular paper and weathered. The tee box was a golf range matt, not an actual substitute tee off area. Wish it was just a well managed course with no surprises.
MUGGY
Muggy day, but most of the course was in good shape, even with the HOT summer so far here. Not very crowded, which adds to the enjoyment.
Nice layout, tuff shape
Nice course, but greens and tees are beaten up. Fun layout, quick pace of play. Worth the money (I paid $21).
Okay as long as it stays cheap.
Conditions were hit or miss. Some tee boxes were actually bare dirt with a little crab grass. Most of the greens were in good shape. Play on the front 9 was too slow and we never saw a ranger. The back 9 was deserted and we were able to salvage a sub 5-hour round with quick play. Would play again as long as the price is cheap. Full price would not be a good value with current conditions and pace of play.
Who cuts the grass?
First of all we showed up never played here before. Went inside paid our money and nobody directed us anywhere. We had to figure out where to go and what courses we were playing as they had three. Once we got on the correct course finally we quickly realized the course was not maintained very well. Fairways were y’all and rough was even taller. Greens were in excellent shape but everywhere else looked like grass you would find in somebody’s back yard. It’s a shame when you know exactly where your ball landed and you still must search for 5 minutes to find out. Course layout is excellent just wish the grounds crew kept the place nice.
Course discriminates against Golf Now members – just 2nd Class Citizens to them
Unbelievable Pro Shop Experience - Upon arriving for my Tee Time I was told, since I signed up through Golf Now as a single, and the remaining 3 golfers for the tee time had brought a 4th person, they were moving my tee time. Oh really? Further, to what time was unknown and I was told they were trying to work me in with another group. The emphasis was that I signed up through ** Golf Now **. Ah, so what? They accept reservations through Golf Now, that’s their policy – not mine?? It got disgustingly worse. Arriving that the 1st tee, looking for a Starter Marshall to find out when is my new tee time, I discover there isn’t one. Back to club house, ask where is the Starter Marshall and I’m told there isn’t one. I ask so when is my tee time? Other person working, Lee is his name, states “there is time before that tee time, why don’t you just go ahead of them as a single?” I reply I’d prefer to play with a group (I wasn’t hitting the ball that well so some help is great to have; also consider golf more social then a competitive sport.). Lee’s reply is “What? I’ve never heard of someone who doesn’t want to play by their selves.” In a condescending tone. (Being he is abrasive and confrontational (this was not the only time found him to make abrasive comments) it clear to see why he’d have that disposition.) The other gentleman behind the counter states, “I’d prefer to play with a group too”. Lee was so abrasive this time that I responded, “you know, have some balls saying that to a customer, I don’t believe you just said that.”. His response? He repeats the statement! Some people just do not learn. IMHO, Lee is a detriment to the image, I’m fairly certain, the ownership desires the staff to maintain or improve upon when it comes to the customer experience. Maybe that is why he was released from the prior club he worked at.
After all that, did I feel like playing golf there? No, not hardly, but I did. I ending up joining another group scheduled not too long from my tee time reservation. What was startling was since I signed up via Golf Now, they felt they had the right to ignore the reservation that they had accepted and confirmed. No one should be discriminated against, especially a paying customer but if you’re a customer via Golf Now – your fair game? Furthermore, the staff not respect their customers and one in particular takes any opportunity to be combative with its patrons. Neither are acceptable and I won’t be playing there again for a long time. Proceed at your own risk is the best way I can close this review.
Worth It
First time playing this course. Very tight and if you get your ball in play, you can score well. Greens were rolling very well considering other courses in the area didn’t have as good of luck with the rough winter. I will be back. Pro-shop guy took the time to explain the course layout and he moved me around where I didn’t have to wait on a single hole even though there were league players playing. Overall good experience!
Mud bogging
Well with record setting rains in May it’s to be expected. This course doesn’t drain well but overall course good condition. Greens were consistent most fairways that weren’t underwater good. One complaint was tee boxes. Sorry I like a grassy tee, something I can step onto with little cushion and good footing. Here the tees are dirt with little grass spots here and there. Constantly moving to find good footing and launch position. For those that haven’t played here it’s a three course layout. Road easy open to me the less appeallling . Cottage little shorter tighter but more interesting. Like the tee box they set up here on 2 nd hole. Was a short wedge 9 iron across little pond but awhile back they placed tee across the path to give you about 190-200 and makes for a good challenge . Lake course probably there signature 9. Really not that much water comes into play but second hole here has water all up the left side and then have little ditch runs through fairway not far from green. It’s a short par 4 and the ditch is reachable so use a hybrid or long iron to set up short iron onto tough green . Very small driving range and really only good for mid irons and wedge warm up . Has good comfortable rural feel and is easy course .
