Unbelievable
If you get the privilege of being invited to play this jewel, congratulations.
This place is 5 star top to bottom. It has been hot something terrible & the staff out there has this course in tip top. This means keeping the course wet and there are spots that were soaked causing tee balls to plug. Was not expecting that considering the lack of rain. Greens rolling great all things considered.
Olivia, the mobile bartender, is amazing. She was around every few holes to keep us hydrated in every way.
Really a treat to be able to get out there.
Even better the second time around!
I played this course about 18 months ago and was excited to be invited back to play. The course is in great shape - the greens probably need just one more week to fully heal but are rolling fairly smoothly. There were a couple questionable hole locations (on slopes) but otherwise the course played fairly and beautifully. The fairways are some of the best quality I've ever seen; very lush and smooth with enough firmness to get a decent roll. I particularly enjoyed the aprons/shaved areas around the greens that allow you to play different types of shots, but getting close to the pin still isn't easy.
The staff is super friendly and the food was delicious (highly recommend the grilled chicken club). Overall it's an excellent golfing experience. Maybe for my third round I'll actually get to play in sunshine!
Excellent Layout
Only reason I did not give it a 5 was due to greens aeration which is what happens in April. I can only imagine what the greens will be like in May. This course is challenging but fair. Even with all the rain the fairways & bunkers were in excellent shape. And the views of Smith Mountain Lake on some of the holes were spectacular. Also the staff could not have been nicer to all of us. Truly a great experience. I can't wait to play it again.
Best Lakeside Course I’ve Ever Played
Water’s Edge CC features a unique, lakeside layout and fantastic conditions to make it worth your drive. If you are fortunate enough to be a member or to be invited by one, you’ll appreciate this hidden gem in SWVA.
With a peninsula-green par-3 and several great views of Smith Mountain Lake, this course delivers in terms of scenery and setting. The diverse layout is challenging enough to make it worth playing again and again without being too frustrating. As a private course it benefits from excellent playing conditions and unrivaled pace-of-play.
There are a few holes that run together but overall the layout here is excellent and takes advantage of its proximity to the lake. Greens are pretty receptive and not difficult to read but skill is required to get up and down here. You’ll use every club in your bag as well and several different clubs of the tee.
This was just my second experience at a private course and I really enjoyed it. It’s a long drive from home but I’ll definitely be back again!
