DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND $
PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY PLAYING HERE!!! I doubt that I would play here now even if it were only $20.
I am a lifetime area resident and have played here many times, but those were all at least 10 years ago. The course has never been one of the nicest ones in the Roanoke Valley, but it has a decent layout, can be fun when it is in acceptable condition, and was beginner friendly.
Sadly, that is no more. Nowadays, they are not even doing the bare minimum to keep the course in playable condition. The teeboxes are all thick crabgrass, the rough would make the US Open blush, and the “places you putt” do not deserve the term green. Unless you saw exactly where your ball landed in the rough, it is gone. Hit a shot into the “green” and it may bounce >10 feet in the air.
Playing here was a mistake...
Played Ole Monterey for the first time today and it will be my last. This course is in such poor condition that the owners should be ashamed to charge what they do to play.
The greens are pathetic and pretty much a waste to try and putt on. And the rough is simply impossible. The grass is so tall that if you land in the rough you ball is basically gone. I lost 11 balls while playing 18 holes!
And the bunkers...words fail me on how crappy they are. Sand traps? No, they are weed infested pits with little to no sand in them. I hit one ball into the overgrowth of one bunker, saw exactly where it landed...and couldn't find it!
I think this would be an awesome course if it was maintained, but as of right now it seems as if the management has given up on it. Unless improvements are made, I will never play it again.
Terrible conditions
Have used your company multiple times on vacations. Every green was in unplayable condition and the tee boxes were barely mowed. There was crabgrass everywhere and very difficult to hit balls that were even sitting in the fairway. We felt like it was a total waste of our time and money. It was in such bad shape that it appeared the club is ready to close down. It is hard to believe you sponsor such a course in such horrendous condition.
down.
Forgotten History
Great layout but course is in terrible unplayable condition. The GolfNow condition assessment is false. Do not play here
Past its prime
Great layout but the course is so unkept it is almost unplayable. The only green with grass is no 18. The other greens are fungus covered and full of holes. The fairways are a mix of weeds and crabgrass. The first cut is over 4 inches deep and the rough is more than a foot deep. We were so disappointed I the condition of the course.
Former Great Course
This course is in such poor condition that it is almost unplayable. Fairways are a mix of crabgrass and weeds. Greens are bare with fungus everywhere
Rough is nearly a foot (yes 12 inches) and unkept
This could be a great course but needs a tremendous amount of work
TRASH!!!!
This is by far the worst condition I have EVER seen any golf course!! There isn’t even a close second. The tea boxes were horrible, the fairways worse than that, and the greens unplayable. There was literally more grass in the sand traps than on the greens. On Labor Day, I had the option to play there for free. I chose to pay $60 at Blue Hills.
Run down
The course is pretty bad, greens so dry they are cracking. No mowing in weeks. It's a shame for beautiful area.
terrible course
Worse course I've played in 20 years. No maintenance done, greens are in horrible shape. I paid for 18 and played 9 because I would rather do something else than endure another 2 hours at this course. Save yourself, go someplace else.
Course has Potential
Seems like it used to be a nice course..but unfortunately it is not that way anymore.
From the tee box to the greens, it is all very poorly maintained. The greens are probably some of the worse I have ever seen and the sand traps were more like over grown sandboxs.
The rate of play was nice and relaxed, but for $52 to play, I expected a better course to play on, from start to finish, just a very poorly maintained course.
No longer A Golf Course
I have played this course for 30 years but i can't go back.
Always liked the layout but the conditions have gotten so bad it's basically unplayable. 17 greens are dead, with dirt spots and crab grass, like putting on a pinball machine. Any ball that missed the fairway was gone in the deep grass. Lost a ball in a fairway bunker, needed a weed eater to look for it. This course has had it rough days over the years, but this is a new level. I am gonna really miss playing out there. I hope someone buys it and makes it a golf course again one day.
First and last time
Not the worst course I have played, but right there with it.
Amenities and carts are good. Cart paths are rough. The fairways are just long grass( 4inches). You will spend more time looking for balls than swinging. Greens arent the worst I've seen. It has much more potential. For the money, not a horrible value, but id rather spend an extra 10-15 and play a better course.
It’s difficult to review this course…
The people are great, they’re doing the best with what they have. The pace of play was great, there was no one within a hour of me when I teed off on a Saturday mid-morning. That would be a great thing but you’ll read why it isn’t. The course layout is intriguing and could really be something special.
I said could be.
The course is in complete shambles. Again, not the staff’s fault, they’re awesome. The greens are lost with crabgrass and dead spots. The mowing that has been done has left dead grass clippings everywhere. There is more mowing that needs to be done than I’m sure the staff has the budget to do. Bunkers? What bunkers? They’re concrete hard or void of sand altogether.
Who owns this course? Either invest money and make it better or sell it to someone that will. Pick a lane, this one isn’t going anywhere.
Back in Great Condition
Got to play nine holes again this weekend. Weather was great making for a very pleasant outing with friends. I have to say that David and the rest of the staff are some of the friendliest and polite people I have had the opportunity to associate with at any golf course over the past 30 years.
I saw some of the new equipment in use which had been awhile. The fairways and rough are mowed to great conditions. The new greens mower did a great job. If you want an affordable round of golf, come back to Ole Monterey.
Cow pasture
Basically a mown cow pasture. Greens were weedy. Weeds in the sand traps. Not maintained very well
Mr. Fred
I haven't played the course in about a year. Now it's the only local course on Golf Now. I could tell the staff is hard at work in getting it ready for play. I will play it again soon.
