Bad Shape and Rude Staff
The course greens were in bad shape for the cost of playing, particularly at a State Park. The fairways were in decent condition but still not up to par with other area courses where the cost is comparable. Lastly, the young man working the desk in pro shop was rude about our time completing the round and ultimately prevented us from completing the last hole. It was not dark, and we were allowed to book a tee time for 18 holes. More importantly, we were never cautioned about our time or given any warning before this young man drove a utility vehicle down the cart path toward our group like he was a police officer responding to a crime and just wasn’t very nice about it.
Worse shape of any course I have ever played
I must say, I grew up playing this course, moved away and was in area for first time in 20 years. The course used to be one of the best State Parks courses in country. But my, how time has changed. Greens were horrible, looks like they were over watered and then burnt to about 65% playable. Fairways were green, but crabgrass looks great from a distance. Rough was mostly clover and I lost 4 balls that were hit down middle and hard pack fairways took them to over patches and not worth spending 15 minutes to find a ball. Sure State provides no funding but needs closed.
Very Enjoyable Round
The pro shop staff is exceptional, the grounds keeping team is very friendly and a pleasure to talk to. We started early on a Monday in the rain. The rain kept the grounds crew off the course until it eased up. Once they hit the course in full stride, they had it fully recovered from the weekend's play. The course is a mix of wide open fairways, blind dog legs, and beautiful views of the Bluestone Gorge. We most definitely will be back for more rounds!
Didn’t play
There was a tournament going on that I didn’t know about, and it started thunderstorming as I was waiting for a cart to become free, so we didn’t get to play. I would like to either get a refund, or be able to reschedule our tee time. Pipe stem golf course employee said I would have to do this through GolfNow. Can you help me reschedule?
Nice State park
Good layout, nice fairways and greens.
Everyone should enjoy this course.
Nice courae
A special place that I will visit again LORD willing
Hot….
For $51 dollars well worth the play. Greens in great shape just a little slow which I expect. Only problem….bring bug spray. Gnats are everywhere. Bought bug spray at the turn back nine was much better.
Course plays long especially after number six. Felt like the full 6700 and then some from the back. I’m a 3 handicap and shot 77
Always Great
Course is my favorite. Played the year it opened in late 60’s when I was in high school. Staff alway friendly and helpful all way down to the grounds crew.
Mountain course with some challenges.
Some long holes and some short. Full size golf course. Def won’t feel cramped or on top of each other. I’m always worn out by the time I finish the uphill 18th. Nice course
Mountain golf
We were staying at Pipestem State Park lodge. Yes it is dated however the staff was very friendly and professional. Had heard the course is a good mountain style layout with great views. Indeed, it is. The fairway and green conditions are still winter as I was reminded with some sparse areas yet to grow in and cold temps. The course architect, Geoffrey Cornish, seemed to favor false fronts and elevated greens. Not good for someone with poor depth perception. I would play again. It is open to the public so golf course etiquette is suspect at times.
Cheers!
Great course, but range and insects need addressed
Love this course, but the range is so chewed up you’re hitting in divots the whole time. Also they need to spray for the gnats. They were REALLY bad. Fairways and greens in great condition.
once again stellar
my favorite wv course. i usually get to play there once a year. on Friday morning i teed off first as the sun rose to a gorgeous fairway drive. the course is really in wonderful shape and the greens rolled true at a medium pace. nice change from many courses that just want to see how fast the greens can go sometimes. shot an 82 from the yellows. take two extra clubs on 18 approach...don't make my mistake...that was my only double.
Surprising
Very well maintained for a state park course. I was very pleased with the course and the value for they money.
Hidden Gem
Played Pipestem for the first time, it's a hidden gem.
This was my first course in West Virginia giving me 32 States I've played in.
I'd love to play it in summer when it's at peak conditions.
