disappointing
The course was in good shape. The staff was very friendly. Waited about 45 min to get carts 'cuz they did not have enough carts. Long line to tee off hole #1. No starter present to keep things going. I'm not a fan of being pushed from behind or pushing those ahead of us, but we waited on every single hole for at least the group ahead of us and most of the time two groups ahead of us. Nothing done to speed up play. We were there 6 hours and played 15 holes. Gave up because we did not pack a lunch and we were starved. Will not play again at this course.
Great course. Great experience
Since the courses were all closed in Chicago, my younger son & I drove up to play the course. I've played several Foulis designed courses in the Chicago area, and was interested to see how Nippersink compared to some of them, ( Itasca CC. Bonnie Brook).. The front nine was good, but the back really showcased this 1922 Foulis gem. For April the course was in exceptional shape. We played in 4hrs walking (Played thru a 4some on #10).
On #18 we caught another 4some. While waiting for them to clear, I noticed a totem pole behind the tee box & went over to take a look. As I was standing there one of the grounds crew pulled up on his mower, shut it off & gave me a fascinating history of the course and the general area. THAT was impressive.
Good routing. Great green/bunker complexes, interesting greens, memorable holes, Great natural setting & overall land plan, exceptional, friendly staff.
Very Impressed.
Great atmosphere
Great course, very friendly staff! And did I mention spotted cow!
All around a good course to spend a day playing at.
Very Pleasant Straightforward Old Schooler
Nippersink was a very nice surprise. In very decent shape and the traps have a good amount of sand in them! Very obvious the new owners have made significant improvements. Found the course overall to be very well maintained.
The clubhouse is really cool old school with nicely updated bar area. Played the 5700 short tees and glad we did....it allowed the course more fun as the greens while smaller in size than what you're used to are just large enough to be pleasant.....the 6300 yd white tees would be far too much exacting for the longer approach shots required.
Most of the holes are pretty much straightaway but unlike many other courses built in this era (1922) there's more than plenty of room to bomb away off the tees....trees frame this pretty parkland course versus encroach. The smallish Foulis punch up greens were really a joy....had a few Foulis foolers and a couple green sites that were almost Donald Ross like. These greens are about 1.5 to 2 times the size of nearby Twin Lakes CC and roll with a decent speed...very fair very old school. Sand traps are fairly placed and reiterate are in good shape (provided folks rake them) which is very unusual these days. 10th and 18th are burly par 4 challenges.
Very quiet and out of the way. We teed off a little after 8 and finished before 11am....very few players....good for us but they definitely deserve some more business....a really enjoyable surprising experience all around.
Recommend. 3.5 stars...gave it 4 stars above because of my surprise.... it "almost" deserved the 4 star because of the maintenance and framing versus typical overgrown trees in the way... a tad too many straightaways.. I will look forward to returning to Nippersink when I'm in the Twin Lakes area again.
Nice place to learn the game
Played Nippersink off of a Greatgolf.com deal. Clubhouse is nicely redone they seem to be trying to fix things and make things better as a gentleman mowing stopped and asked me if more trees need to be trimmed back. Course is in ok shape mostly straight forward and back and forth holes. Thought greens in better shape than expected. Besides the back and forth the 7 and 16th par 3s were really good. Had good character and good visuals. Course is a good place to learn the game. Nice place tucked back away in the woods with good service.
Better course to play in area
If you are looking for a round that isn't professional conditions, this is a great place to play. Staff will treat you good for your first time and if you are a usual customer. Big slower greens will stick a shot unlike some courses in the area.
