The Club at Shannondell
About
The Club at Shannondell, formerly known as George Washington Golf Course, has been ranked by Golf Digest as one of the "25 Best Golf Courses in Pennsylvania" and it's also on their list of "Best Places to Play." From the back tees, the course is just over 6,100 yards. Put away your driver because there won't be many chances to grip it and rip it on this course. It's a seemingly mild layout with wide, gently rolling fairways that appear forgiving, but the strategically placed hazards along the pitched greens demand well placed shots. The cut of the rough is also higher and there are several doglegs, placing even further emphasis on accuracy. Proper club selection is also very important on this golf course. The Club at Shannondell is a fun but fair test for players of all skill levels.

Pleasure to play
The Club at Shannondale has always been a pleasure to play. I did not score well but I had a great time as always.
A little TLC Needed - Rates 2-1/2 Stars
Starter was very friendly and accommodating, though the person cleaning and lining up the carts was not very organized/attentive. We were given a cart that was not cleaned (may not have been sanitized either). After the 4th hole, we want back to get another cart. Even those that were sanitized had pencils and tees left in them.
Most of the bunkers were not filled and had weeds in them. Tee boxes had a lot of discarded tees in them and there were a few places where trash needed to be picked up.
The fairways/greens were in fair to good shape.
There were a ton of wayward shots by others that had people playing out of our fairway as we attempted to tee off.
Pace of play was better than expected. We were told it would take 4-1/2 hours, but took 4.
Hopefully, the course can be cleaned up a bit in the future.
Today’s Round
Fairways and greens were in great shape although bunkers needed some work (sand). convenient putting green would help.
Overall a very good experience....the layout maximizes the space for sure. Too many tee boxes and greens next to each other. There were some confusing times as to which flag goes to which hole...waiting for tee box 15 feet away to go..or the box another 20 feet over from that one. Besides that...was a very good time and would definitely go back again.
For old people
I would never imagine a midday round on a Wednesday would take 5 hours. There was a foursome of gentlemen that took their good old time and stopped to talk at every hole. 3 groups that Tee’s off after them had to pass them and there was till 2-3 holes in front of them towards the end. When calling the golf shop they said they would send a ranger out and never did. When bringing up once we got back, the starter said sorry that’s shannondell. We get a lot of old people all the time from across the street.
Great course
We play after work. The pace of play is great;however, if you use a cart they do ask that you return the cart by. 8:15 pm (sunset well after 8:30). We tend to walk because of this rule. In addition, stay out of the rough. The ball will disappear.
Hard Hats Required
For the most part, course is in good shape. Greens were a little shaggy but not bad. Bunkers, on the other hand, were either under water, full of rocks, or grown over with grass- terrible.
Course itself puts a premium on shot and club selection- this is not a grip-and-rip course...several tee shots where driver puts you in trouble, several dog legs and TIGHT fairways, and LOTS of trees limiting your line.
That said, the only folks who should play here are low handicappers- as soon as I drove into the course, my car was hit by an errant approach shot. Line drive past our heads in the kill zone waiting to tee off on #3 (4 greens within 30 yards of each other), and several groups playing out of other fairways all day. The kicker is the Callaway tattoo I now have on my thigh from getting pasted on the fly by the drive FROM THE GROUP IN FRONT OF US! Seriously- the group IN FRONT of us hit us on the fly. This course crammed 18 holes into a space better suited to 9- keep your head on a swivel.
Nice layout
Course is in very good condition. Would definitely play here again.
Nice Round
Fairways and greens are in very good shape although bunkers need some work. Course plays longer than appears
Could be Better
The "club" is a very tight course that attracts a lot of first time golfers or HIGH handicappers as it is a shorter course that is easy to get to. The greens were in very good shape and are small so accuracy is needed. The course is very tight with a tee box or green only feet apart. The sand traps were HORRENDOUS if you could call the hollowed out pits sand traps. There were many fairway TRAPS that were more like fox holes than sand trap- no sand to be found. The green side bunkers did have some sand in them, but were neglected. I have played this course twice in the last year and do like the doglegs as they create a challenge, rather than the usual straight 320/340 yrd holes of most courses. It was a busy Thursday afternoon when we played before the holiday weekend so it was crowded, but the pace of play was very good as we did not have to wait for the group in front of us very often. NOT having a cart girl or snack stand was disappointing as I was unable to wait the 15 minutes for a hot dog at the turn. The restaurant is nice and the more important than the golfers that are there to play and get a quick snack.
Course needs some help
Course was not in great shape. Maybe it was after the storms but it wasn’t in top shape. Fun to play though.
Dogleg C.C. - Short But Sweet
This was my "home" course in the early part of this century, before all the changes.
Beyond that, the fairways are still tighter than a lot of tracks and the greens are smaller.
Reasonably priced and in great condition (provided you stay in the fairway), and *only* 6,000 yds, it's a course for everyone.
Too many bad golfers
Nice course. Nice staff but too many people. Tight layout. Balls flying everywhere. Extremely slow play.
