The Club at Shannondell, formerly known as George Washington Golf Course, has been ranked by Golf Digest as one of the "25 Best Golf Courses in Pennsylvania" and it's also on their list of "Best Places to Play." From the back tees, the course is just over 6,100 yards. Put away your driver because there won't be many chances to grip it and rip it on this course. It's a seemingly mild layout with wide, gently rolling fairways that appear forgiving, but the strategically placed hazards along the pitched greens demand well placed shots. The cut of the rough is also higher and there are several doglegs, placing even further emphasis on accuracy. Proper club selection is also very important on this golf course. The Club at Shannondell is a fun but fair test for players of all skill levels.

First Time Played

Rough was thick and lost multiple balls that were just off fairway causing group to play much slower that anticipated. Course layout had parallel holes creating confusion to first timers knowing which green they were playing off the tee. Very patchy fairways in spots. Greens putted fairly true but had many ball marks that had not been fixed by previous golfers.

Slicers dream.

Many dogleg rights for the right handed slicer. Plenty of par 5s and a couple long 4s. Very enjoyable.,

Good value

I like older style courses where there is limited distance from the green to the next tee....and this course is that style. Some fairways are close but overall the playability is very good. Fairway and greens in good shape. I shoot in the 80s and will return to The Club.

Just don't hit the bunkers!

This course has a nice layout. It's challenging but fun at the same time. Here are my pros/cons:

PROS:

+ Not that long (even from the blue tees)

+ WOOF WOOF (doglegs....everywhere!)

+ Challenging but fun (allows you to take risks or play strategically)

+ Greens are soft on landing (allows you to attack the pin if you're into that)

+ Greens are fairly easy to read

+ Good price for a round of golf

CONS:

- Bunkers...they could use a little help (especially fairway bunkers)

- Greens are soft but the speed is deceiving and variable (you may be short on some holes and long on others)

- Divots everywhere

- Carts don't have a sand bag to repair fairway divots

- No driving range (this would be SOOO helpful for many players that need a warmup routine)

- Cart paths could use a bit of repair here and there (some cracks along the way)

OVERALL: 4.0

Great course, definitely recommend. Just wish the bunkers were a bit better and there was a practice facility. Otherwise...fantastic course

The difference between a 5 hr round and a 3hr round. Thank you to the group of 2 foursomes that let us through we finished in 3 hours otherwise it would of be 5. Greens have nice roll but alot of ball marks and cleat marks on all the greens.

Pleasant Round

Just moved to this area. Played as a single. Hooked up with two nice friendly players. Starter got me out earlier than booked. Pleasant round with good pace. Will play here again. Only negative is cart paths are in need of resurfacing. Understandable this year with economics and situation facing courses. Good mix of holes and large well maintained challenging greens.

Where to begin...

To start off, I just moved to the area and I am looking for an average course where I can play at a decent price 1-2 times a week. I didn’t have high expectations.

I want to mention the layout of the course is very poor, it might be the most unpractical course design I have ever seen. This was my first time here and I’m playing by myself, and there were many holes where I didn’t know what was going on. On tee box 5, you are literally sharing the same tee box (different areas) with tee box 10, and there is very little distinction on which hole is going where, both holes could share an initial fairway and dog leg into separate directions. Very weird. Lot of the course has holes that are next to each other and going in the same direction, so that could get confusing too. Holes are narrow, And compact, so you hear a lot of people yelling fore (some don’t...) . It’s also an extremely short course, a golfer handicap from scratch to 20 probably truly only need their driver 4-5 times the entire round. If you’re looking to challenge your long game, it’s not going to happen here.

Next is the condition. Tee boxes weren’t horrible, some were, but my biggest fret are the greens. These greens are terrible, just littered with divots and ball marks. It’s as if they have a rule against repairing your divot. I almost felt silly trying to find my divot because I would end up fixing 2-3 along the way each hole. It makes putting impossible. Each putt has multiple obstacles.

One of play to begin was alright. I tee off on one and I’m behind a slower foursome. They very nicely and kindly asked if I wanted to play through and it 3 and I appreciated it. I made it through my front nine, trailing a nice twosome, keeping average pace so I didn’t mind. When I finish up at 9 and go to 10, there is a foursome out of no where teeing off. Very slow, didn’t ask if I wanted to play through, after spending 80 minutes on 10, 11, and waiting for 12 tee box I turned around and left, course wasn’t worth the wait due to the reason listed above.

I paid 36 bucks to tee off at 5 on a weekday, I’m not expecting a lot but I expected a lot more than what I got. Probably not coming back, only thing going for it is it’s very conveniently located between my job and home.

Side note: only positive thing about my experience was when I turned at 9 and saw the two some I was behind teeing off and a new four some pulling up behind them, cutting me off, I went to their bar/restaurant for a pick-me-up to take to the tee box and the place was very busy (for covid standards) and staff was nice and professional. Coming from a former bartender, when Bartender gave a suggestion about the drink I ordered I was impressed and delighted. Seriously, the only reason I might come back is because of this bar/restaurant
