Cold Water Canyon Golf Course in the Wisconsin Dells has a layout that dates back to the 1920s, making it one of the oldest golf courses in the state. Originally a nine-hole course, it was expanded to a full 18 holes but the original layout was carefully preserved as the front nine. The back nine offers a completely different round with a Scottish-links design, however it manages to blend seamlessly with the classic layout of the first nine. Water hazards come into play on a few holes and there are strategically placed bunkers to contend with as well. The second half of Cold Water Canyon Golf Course is more challenging than the front but both are equally scenic. The golf course and the adjoining Chula Vista Resort are tucked away amidst thick forests of mature trees.

Good value

Shot makers course, excellent, fast greens. Didn’t hit driver but twice. Carts were first class with good GPS. Played black tees just a shade under 6100, but still challenging. Sand is good consistency and course conditions were very good.

Disappointed

We arrived for a 10;50 time. I asked where the range was but as told it was closed just now for mowing. First time I ever saw a driving range mowed mid morning rather than first thing in the day or end of the day,

Hole 2 was being mowed so i waited for the mower to finish coming in my direction. Rather than go off to side and wait he turned around and went back up the right side of the fairway.

Greens were for the most part incredibly slow.

A number of signs for the next hole were pointing in the wrong direction.

Rough was very high for the average golfer. I am experienced and an 18 handicap and would say the rough was incredible challenging for a resort type course.

Not fun to play.

A tale of two nines

We used Cold Water Canyon as the starting point of a buddies trip in early June. This being many of the guys first time playing courses near the Wisconsin Dells and we thought it would be a nice start to the trip. We figured the conditions would be decent and allow us to get a feel for the rest of the trip and we were not disappointed.

We had an odd number in our group this and on the second hole the Pro came out to say as long as no one was behind us we could play in a five some. This was perfect as we had a few guys still introducing themselves to the rest of the group. We teed off at 2 on a Wednesday and didn't see a single group behind us the entire day, pace of play was perfect.

With the course on the shorter side we played the back tees but what a few guys didn't know was how tight the front can be, and how penal the fescue grass and mounds call be on the back. Don't yet the yardage fool you, the course still has plenty of teeth. The greens were in great shape with such little play for the COVID restrictions and allowed us to get a feel for the resort greens we would be playing on all weekend.

The front nine winds through the woods while the back nine takes on a "links" sort of look. The course overall puts a premium on tees shots and if in a decent position off the tee the front can be taken advantage of, if not you will get some punch out practice. While the back nine we tired to avoid the fescue at all costs.

We had a few guys that had been going to the area for years and never played it and when we finished up they mentioned how they didn't know how they missed it, but would slot this in the rotation of courses to play.

There were plenty of pros on the day, clubhouse, staff, food, cold drinks and not sure if anyone in the group had a negative thing to say, not sure what higher praise you could ask for.

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!!!

My buddies and I dropped in for a Sunday morning round on our way home from a Friday-Saturday of golf in central Wisconsin. The staff was incredibly welcoming upon arrival with plenty of course information. The course itself was in very good condition. The front and back nine are two different courses which made for a nice round of variety. While there was no bev cart on the course, the bar and food on the turn hit the spot. Long story short, Cold Water Canyon nicely capped off a great weekend of golf.

Great conditions, exceeded expectations

Played "Coldwater Canyon" this week for the first time in about 10 years. I was pleasantly surprised with the course conditions--tees, fairways and greens were all in excellent shape. They have obviously continued to invest in the course and work hard to maintain it.

The original 9 holes was built in the 1920's and is short and tight with smaller greens. You'll need to choose your clubs carefully and keep the ball in play to score well. The back nine is a high quality links style course, comparable to the best courses in the Dells area only much more affordable.

The "tavern" at the clubhouse offers excellent food and they seem capable of accommodating any size outing. They also offer many affordable stay and play options which include the benefits of the water park and restaurant facilities on site.

If you are able to visit Wisconsin Dells, this course is well worth a try!

Cart attendant wasn't seen until the 9th hole. The front 9 is nothing special, but the back nine is challenging and fun. Friendly staff once they started coming around.

Short but Extremely Challenging

This is the tale of two sides, very different sides. The front was created in something like 1927 and is tree lined and a lot of "position golf". Greens are great, traps in "okay" shape on the front. The back becomes more of a links style course and is 300 yards longer from the tips. The yardage won't scare you, 6100 from the tips, but the length is strategically placed and you will be challenged all day. Back side traps are excellent though I suppose if you stayed out of them it wouldn't matter! LOL Staff is excellent and Chula Vista is one of the best resorts in the Dells

Nice golf course.

I've played 22 different golf courses in Wisconsin at the $30 - $50 range. CWC is as nice as any of them. I booked a hot deal so I didn't have to pay full price. I would not pay that much to golf there. For a beginner like me, a well mowed, wider style golf course would be ideal. This one has some narrow spots. Lost some balls. I'll golf there again.

Wisconson November golf

Staff was very, very friendly; greens were well kept. Fairways were cut short and rough was okay.

Nice carts, included in the price--weather was in 70's (yes in November). A couple of sweet dog legs, and short par threes.

No service carts were there--but I only saw four other groups of gofers.

Challenging Course but Not Long

Okay, "not long", but it is sneaky long because of the dog legs, rough and tough greens. The two nines are very different. First nine is more carved through trees, tight'ish, and tiny greens. Ball placement is critical both off the tee to give you the proper angles into the green and because the greens are so small on the front you have to be accurate.

The back side then is a total change. Much more wide open and more true links style. Plenty of room off the tee but if you waiver from the fairway be ready for those large fescue hills that will swallow up your ball. Large greens and undulating. Fun course though and greens were in great shape.
