The Battleground at Deer Park
About
Created as a tribute to Texas' battle for independence, The Battleground is more of a links-style course that is burdened by the wind and tricky because of the abundance of water (14 holes). Despite its links flavor, the fairways are narrow, and they're lined by thick rough.
Providing sort of a golf experience/history lesson combined into one day, each hole is named after some significant person, item, or event in the Texas fight for independence. For example, one hole is named Sam Houston, while another is named after a pair of twin cannons: Twin Sisters.
No. 8 is one of the signature holes, a 175-yard poke over the water to a green that is shared with the par 5 No. 1. A waterfall accents the edge of the lake, providing a unique aesthetic.
On the back, the finishing hole is fun because you can play aggressively off the tee, free of major hazards in the landing area that is framed by mounding. The approach must carry water, and you'll need to take an extra club because the green is elevated.
Getting there : From Houston, take Hwy. 610 and loop around the city to Hwy. 225 east. Take the first Deer Park exit and turn right onto Georgia St. Next, drive 1 mile to the course, and look for the entrance on the right side of the street.

Worst condition I’ve seen in Houston
This course was once a beautiful course and well worth the free fee to play. I don’t know what has happened but it’s not just drought causing course conditions. 15 of the 18 greens are a joke. #3, a par 3 should just be shut down. The green has holes and full of actual sand traps and burnt patches on about 80% of the green. Legit sand traps on greens is inexcusable. Clearly at this point management no longer cares and simply collects green fees to collect them.
The clubhouse is closed. No pro shop. No cart girl. No coolers anymore on the golf carts. All this is in conditions of 100 degree play. Marshall wasn’t even around to control pace of play or groups teeing off at wrong times causing huge backups on the first hole!
I usually play this course about 10 times a year but this will be my last time until I hear course conditions have improved.
Take your money anywhere but here.
Still in bad shape
4 of the 18 greens are in really good shape. The other 14 have various levels of dead spots on them. Most of them have dead spots on the fringe and don't really impact putts. About 5 or 6 greens have dead spots all over them and make them basically unplayable.
Concrete
Tee boxes like concrete, couldn't put tee in ground most times.
Greens in bad shape, 2 out of 18 in good shape
Greens need improvement
Greens have improved a lot since last time I have played but still have a ways to go. Some of the tee boxes are very hard but in heat like this, that is expected. Overall for what I paid I think it’s a good deal.
Disappointed
This course has a great layout. However, the course conditions were the worst I have ever played. The greens were dead with patches on multiple greens. The fairways were not maintained at all. I didn’t see one grounds keeper all day. Save your money and heartache
CCs review
There is no friendlier staff in the entire Houston area. I wish the course was in better shape especially the greens. I still play there a lot especially the 4 pm $20 special. It is a good deal and again the staff out there makes it a pleasure to play. Even when the high school students are there they are very accommodating and let you go threw or around them. So for me when I am off and get a Hotdeal I think it’s way worth the money to play there.
Please let it rain
Course is like so many in Houston area, desperately in need of rain.
Greens, tee boxes and fairways suffering from lack of water and the heat. Fairways and some tee boxes chocked up with thick weeds but it's either that or hard dirt due to drought like conditions.
A few fairways and some greens very playable just not enough to want to go back until conditions improve with some rain and weed killer.
Positives: Pace of play was just over 3 hours for 18. Staff were nice and saw beverage cart multiple times during the round. Just need mother nature to pitch in some!
Poor Quality of the Greens
I have played this course once or twice a year for about 20 years, the last five years have just been poor quality. The course just isn't being kept up with enough for what it costs. The greens are bare and have terrible grass patches on them making some holes almost unplayable. I keep hoping Battleground will be a playable course again, but it continues to dissappoint.
Playing golf
The front nine was in bad shape, a lot of the greens was in bad condition!
The back nine was in a lot better condition maybe two greens were bad!
Enjoyable 18 Holes
Great value for money. Some of the greens were a bit rough round the edges but did not detract from a fun round of golf.
Would definitely play here again.
What once was now isn't
This course used to be a beautiful well mannered course. It was a highlight to play and after get a great lunch. Now this course reminds what would happen after an apocalypse. More weeds than grass, the greens should be called browns, no marshall and more cow pasture than golf course . There were very few people on the course but those who were there were a fivesome and a foursome of elderly walkers! We skipped 2 holes and just got tired of being on the course and left after bout 12 played holes. The mighty have fallen.
