The Battleground at Deer Park
About
Created as a tribute to Texas' battle for independence, The Battleground is more of a links-style course that is burdened by the wind and tricky because of the abundance of water (14 holes). Despite its links flavor, the fairways are narrow, and they're lined by thick rough.
Providing sort of a golf experience/history lesson combined into one day, each hole is named after some significant person, item, or event in the Texas fight for independence. For example, one hole is named Sam Houston, while another is named after a pair of twin cannons: Twin Sisters.
No. 8 is one of the signature holes, a 175-yard poke over the water to a green that is shared with the par 5 No. 1. A waterfall accents the edge of the lake, providing a unique aesthetic.
On the back, the finishing hole is fun because you can play aggressively off the tee, free of major hazards in the landing area that is framed by mounding. The approach must carry water, and you'll need to take an extra club because the green is elevated.
Getting there : From Houston, take Hwy. 610 and loop around the city to Hwy. 225 east. Take the first Deer Park exit and turn right onto Georgia St. Next, drive 1 mile to the course, and look for the entrance on the right side of the street.

Could be a great course
Course layout is spectacular, however, the turf management does not match. Very thick rough in spots with a lot of weeds. The greens were inconsistent and slow. Lots of uneven tee boxes. I think it was 15, temporary green was just a part of the fairway. I would definitely play again but a little more TLC is needed, especially when it come to the most important part, the greens. As a former golf course superintendent, I am probably more critical than most, in the courses defense. Look forward to playing it again though as I loved the layout. Tough but fair
BumpyGround
Course was in rough shape. Greens were like carpet in a crack house, tore up, weeds growing around the fringes, burns, and a few cockroaches. Fairways were beat up, lots of ground under repair, a whole green under repair…. The rough, well good luck finding your ball.
Really it’s a shame, the course layout is fantastic, but the course is run down. Spend your money elsewhere, I will be.
$30 course at most that charges $55 to play usually
There are nice greens as on this course as well but I can assure you the second par 3 you encounter on the first 9 is just trashed and has been since at least 2020-2021. It’s just dirt. It’s not a green. It’s brown. The back 9 are a bit better. The course is nice but I think the green fees are high considering there’s better courses that charge around the same. Gus Wortham for example, pearland golf club, southwyck. All courses that charge around the same and are well kept.
Excellent staff. Course maintenance is almost non-existent. Carts prior to starting were in great condition. No left over trash and sand bottles were filled. Price to play compared to the condition of the course was not worth it.
Having fun, but.
Course was fine but got rained out. Texas summer weather off the Gulf.
Slow regulars
Pace of play was great on front nine. Caught up with several groups of regulars at the start of the back nine. The groups would not allow anyone to play through and I am a fast prayer. Three greens are in need of fungus repair. Other than that it was a good day.
Really Poor Condition
I’m a resident of Deer Park and live walking distance to the course. I’ve played this course many times over the years. It used to be my go to, but I moved on once the conditions deteriorated so badly several years ago. Got tired of hearing all the excuses about why the course was in such bad shape… It’s really too bad, because the course design and layout are fantastic. I decided to give it a try once again last Friday, paying full price ($50 plus). Absolutely not worth the money. Greens are STILL just terrible. Newly redone bunkers not being taken care of. Course not manicured very well at all. Seems minimal maintenance performed daily. Don’t even think about the driving range… Can’t believe this one time gem of a golf course and practice facility stays in such poor condition.
Front 9
The front 9 was ok the back 9 had some very unplayable greens .I had to move my ball a couple times to make it where I could putt. The fairways were in good shape .I wish the Marshall was better at keeping pace of play we had a traffic jam the whole back 9
Terrible greens. Do not worth the price
The greens are in terrible conditions, specially the front 9.
Course in general are also not recovered from the winter storm. I the actual condition it doesn’t worth the price.
Nice layout though.
Affordable and fun, but two greens need to be repaired
Had an outstanding time playing this course. Was very affordable for a Saturday morning tee time, the staff was friendly, and the course was fun. The only issue was 2 greens were in rough condition. It’s the only thing keeping me from giving this a 5 star ranking. One par 3 in particular But for a casual golfer this was a great place to play. It was challenging enough for my friends who are more experienced players, but not hard enough that I couldn’t enjoy it as well. I will be back.
