The Battleground at Deer Park
About
Created as a tribute to Texas' battle for independence, The Battleground is more of a links-style course that is burdened by the wind and tricky because of the abundance of water (14 holes). Despite its links flavor, the fairways are narrow, and they're lined by thick rough.
Providing sort of a golf experience/history lesson combined into one day, each hole is named after some significant person, item, or event in the Texas fight for independence. For example, one hole is named Sam Houston, while another is named after a pair of twin cannons: Twin Sisters.
No. 8 is one of the signature holes, a 175-yard poke over the water to a green that is shared with the par 5 No. 1. A waterfall accents the edge of the lake, providing a unique aesthetic.
On the back, the finishing hole is fun because you can play aggressively off the tee, free of major hazards in the landing area that is framed by mounding. The approach must carry water, and you'll need to take an extra club because the green is elevated.
Getting there : From Houston, take Hwy. 610 and loop around the city to Hwy. 225 east. Take the first Deer Park exit and turn right onto Georgia St. Next, drive 1 mile to the course, and look for the entrance on the right side of the street.

Battleground/Deer Park
Always liked this course . Can be a difficult place to play, if you’re not consistent off the tee. Really fun course otherwise. Overall the course was in good shape. Would definitely recommend this course. Thanks.
Battling the Elements
Hadn't played at Battleground G.C. in about 6-9 months and decided to try it again on my day off. Early on, I realized that the course's layout was very challenging. I suppose, I could have noticed it before but previiously I was focused on just playing. In any case, the course is in relatively good shape for fall, almost winter conditions down south. The greens were recently sanded and were very fast, more than I remember last time. The grass was weathered on some holes indluding the fringe of the greens but the fairways were in good shape. Overall, I 'd recommend the course. By the way, it has at least 5 tee boxes for varying skill levels.
Good course for price
Course was in better sahpe then my last round there.
What a shame
It’s been awhile since I’ve played here but it’s not hard to remember why I quit coming. This place is a poster child for what happens when a city course is leased to a corporate group. The only good, golf carts are fairly new.
Course needs major maintenance. Greens are coming back but never back to what they were when city ran the course. They are cutting them so much smaller because they can’t grow grass! The “memory trees” planted all over the course are beautiful oaks but need major trimming by a trained arborist. Fairways have grass but need to be cut. Putting green comes with “mud traps”. That’s a first for me.
They have maintenance guys running around in John Deere carts burning gas and watching golfers instead of cutting grass. We saw these “clowns” trim around 3 trees and then take a smoke break by the practice facilities restroom. Then they headed back to the compound racing to get there.
Overall course maintenance needs to tackle one hole at time and cut grass, clean and trim trees. Maybe within a month you could have the course looking decent. Don’t be surprised you’ll have enough branches and limbs for a bomb fire! What a shame.
Oh and cut down the cypress “guarding” number 5 green. It wasn’t originally designed to be there. That was a good risk / reward hole before.
Rough and friendly
Using Google maps plus Lexus navigation I still had trouble homing in on the golf course. Navigating on the course I again found myself lost, not intending on teeing off on #10 but that said met some very fine people and played nine in a fun foursome. The clubhouse is top notch as is the helpful and friendly staff. We did have trouble with the bumpy and slow greens.. I liked the historical touches complete with a replica of one of the twin sisters cannons from the Texas Revolution and the steel truss bridge shipped from Iowa and crossing the water to the 18th green. It was an hour driving time and add a half hour driving back thru rush hour traffic so not sure when II return but I will.
Getting better
Glad they are improving the greens. Good marshall and other staff.
One complaint: They still need to use flag color to indicate approx. hole locations especially on the deeper greens. Either that or placement charts would help as well.
Could be a great course
Course layout is spectacular, however, the turf management does not match. Very thick rough in spots with a lot of weeds. The greens were inconsistent and slow. Lots of uneven tee boxes. I think it was 15, temporary green was just a part of the fairway. I would definitely play again but a little more TLC is needed, especially when it come to the most important part, the greens. As a former golf course superintendent, I am probably more critical than most, in the courses defense. Look forward to playing it again though as I loved the layout. Tough but fair
BumpyGround
Course was in rough shape. Greens were like carpet in a crack house, tore up, weeds growing around the fringes, burns, and a few cockroaches. Fairways were beat up, lots of ground under repair, a whole green under repair…. The rough, well good luck finding your ball.
Really it’s a shame, the course layout is fantastic, but the course is run down. Spend your money elsewhere, I will be.
$30 course at most that charges $55 to play usually
There are nice greens as on this course as well but I can assure you the second par 3 you encounter on the first 9 is just trashed and has been since at least 2020-2021. It’s just dirt. It’s not a green. It’s brown. The back 9 are a bit better. The course is nice but I think the green fees are high considering there’s better courses that charge around the same. Gus Wortham for example, pearland golf club, southwyck. All courses that charge around the same and are well kept.
Excellent staff. Course maintenance is almost non-existent. Carts prior to starting were in great condition. No left over trash and sand bottles were filled. Price to play compared to the condition of the course was not worth it.
Having fun, but.
Course was fine but got rained out. Texas summer weather off the Gulf.
