The Battleground at Deer Park
About
Created as a tribute to Texas' battle for independence, The Battleground is more of a links-style course that is burdened by the wind and tricky because of the abundance of water (14 holes). Despite its links flavor, the fairways are narrow, and they're lined by thick rough.
Providing sort of a golf experience/history lesson combined into one day, each hole is named after some significant person, item, or event in the Texas fight for independence. For example, one hole is named Sam Houston, while another is named after a pair of twin cannons: Twin Sisters.
No. 8 is one of the signature holes, a 175-yard poke over the water to a green that is shared with the par 5 No. 1. A waterfall accents the edge of the lake, providing a unique aesthetic.
On the back, the finishing hole is fun because you can play aggressively off the tee, free of major hazards in the landing area that is framed by mounding. The approach must carry water, and you'll need to take an extra club because the green is elevated.
Getting there : From Houston, take Hwy. 610 and loop around the city to Hwy. 225 east. Take the first Deer Park exit and turn right onto Georgia St. Next, drive 1 mile to the course, and look for the entrance on the right side of the street.

Give it some time?
Liked the course a lot, just in pretty rough shape. Guess it was a lot worse after the freeze. Front 9 greens are near unplayable sand traps. Back 9 is in much better shape. Not worth the full priced fees. Look forward to going back once it’s in good shape. Or if they adjust green fees temporarily. Staff were helpful and nice.
Good course
The front nine the greens are not the best. The back nine greens are much better. There is minimal food like chips or crackers because of a fire they have no pro shop or club house.
Battle Ground
The front 9 w greens were being sanded and plugged with most of the greens being dead and un- puttable .
There were no water kegs on the course the day I went . Most of the holes had temp tee boxes for white and Blue, the club house / Bar was closed. If I had been notified of all this I would not have played there.
Bad shape
The clubhouse burned down so the amenities were lacking. But, that’s understandable. The greens were freshly punched and sanded. The fairways were dry and hard as cement, there were plenty of ground under repair areas. No repaired divots anywhere. Everything was just in horrible shape yet you still pay 50 bucks a round. One positive I will add is that the bunkers were actually redone and raked for once.
Course is in terrible condition.
Have played this course many times. They have had green issues before but generally the course is in fairly good condition. Unfortunately the whole course is not in good condition at all. From the tee boxes all the way to the greens, the course needs a lot of work. Some fairways were not even mowed and very few greens did not have dead spots. I love the layout but will not return to this course until I see better reviews.
Greens in terrible shape
Greens are covered in that patchy, bumpy grass and it’s all of a sudden. Played a few times with no issues but most holes are unputtable.
Worst in town
I used to be a member there about 3 years ago but cancelled because of the conditions of the course. Started going downhill. I played yesterday to give it a chance, and I shouldn’t have gone out there. When you putt, it’s like playing PLINKO. Course is just in bad shape and city needs to do something about it. Play somewhere else if you can!
It was a hot deal so I played for 15 bucks
Still not really worth it. A tournament was going on so pace of play was horrible. 3 sets of foursomes backed up at hole 5 . The course has gotten a little better so I gave it 2 stars.
Course conditions
I’ve always loved this course but over these pass few years in has gone down hill. Most of the tee boxes are dirt and the greens are horrible. We played Sunday and there was frost on the greens so we had a delayed start which isn’t a big deal but when there is 15 other groups waiting to play they should do a split start. Start some on the first tee box and then start some on the tenth tee box. That way we aren’t waiting 45 minutes to tee off. We are going to wait a few months before we play here again.
Course
Im starting with the greens they need a lot of work on every hole they have I heard someone else call it crab grass but it’s on every hole. There are also on most holes and even the practice green in the front random dry spots like 2 foot by 2 foot so dry it’s dirt or something killed it. So greens need major work and aeration. I believe they may rely on rain also could use a water truck. The fairway are a little better but again they need aeration. Tee boxes need work. In the end course need a new course superintendent to keep it nice 24/7 idk maybe charge 5$ more a round for everyone and put that 5 extra straight to lawn care
Greens just horrible!!!
To me, this place needs some major TLC. Greens have sprouts all over. A 7’ putt shouldn’t zigzag to the hole on nearly every hole. The only hole admirable was 16. The fringes were dried up and covered w weeds. Fairways were very thin and damaged. Tee boxes barely had grass on them. It’s like there’s no irrigation out grounds crew working here.
needs a new greens keeper and superintendent
This course needs a total redo of aeration and grass. there was no where on the course where it wasn't like hitting off of cement (ok, to be fair, the bunker sand was actually very good).
I know greens were redone on the front years ago, but one could not tell, please, either spend money to make the greens better, or give up on them and make the fairways playable.
Or maybe the tee boxes, our group played off of yellow and white, and most of the time, I needed a hammer to put my tee in the ground. seriously, awful. and most of the white tee boxes were just 2 stakes stuck in the middle of fairway. and then, what is up with the red tees, why are they all 150 yards from every hole except par 3s?
Greens were better on the back nine, however I don't think the holes have ever been changed, its like their hole cutter got lost at the beginning of the pandemic. The edges were worn out on some holes to like 6 inches.
Bottom line is not worth the $35 we paid. Sad because the layout could make for a very fun course.
Poor Condition of the Course
Too many greens with crab grass and sand. Too many tee boxes that were hard as a rock and completely sand.
