Great Time
I’ve played the babe 3 times very challenging but yet less expensive about $20 less.. ike is easier no doubt but has its challenges.. deff more open and less hill sides on the front 9.. I loved the layout and since I went during the winter fairways were thin etc conditions which was expected.. no doubt when spring rolls around everything will be grown out and beautiful! The course is well maintained under the weather circumstances and I can’t wait to return the begging of spring
Challenging Round
Greens were fast and in good condition. The course was in descent shape but the course is long and difficult.
Front 9 is terrible, muddy. Back 9 is good
Front 9 has many areas near the green fringes that are extremely muddy that you have to go 10 yards to find a decent non-muddy lie. The course has added sand on the greens but they ought to do the same with those fringe areas to control the moisture.
The back 9 is in much better shape.
But most of the tee boxes are really trashed on the whole course.
The fairways are shaggy and really hard to hit off when the dormant grass grabs your club and then the mud under also kills your shots during the winter months.
Somehow we got stuck in a traffic jam on 13, when a lady group had a player carrying her bag!!! They were barely teeing off, and there was another group waiting behind them. Everybody started moaning and groaning as did the group who caught up to us, and they were 2 holes behind!
Course under repair
Greens sand dressed without letting golfers know.
Fairways appear to be under repair and perhaps about to be relaid. Again golfers were not made aware of the current state of the course. If expecting the normal great condition of the course I’d wait until ground works have been finished.
Just know what you’re getting...
First let me say on the positive... the greens on Ike were phenomenal. By far the best (or worst) part of the course depending on how you look at it. I’ve been told that $50 is a steal for this course but, personally I felt like the one being robbed. You can tell by the layout and certainly the greens (slope and conditions) that this was once a wonderful course but, no more.
During Covid there are lots of baked in excuses and many are valid but, if you can’t manage and maintain even the little stuff- tee boxes, trash (literally debris and garbage) and your carts (not charged, functional) then you shouldn’t be charging even $40 a round. I understand that fairways go dormant but, these were borderline dead.
My suggestion if you’re considering this course? Pay more and drive further from the city or pay considerably less and drive to your muni course up the street. Either way you’ll be happier- whether with value or with quality. This isn’t worth $50 and I don’t believe Covid has much to do with it at all.
Oh... it does have some wonderful views but, I’ve only been in the area for a year or so and many courses have similar or better scenery- that are either cheaper or if not a much better track.
I like Ike
I played the Eisenhower course for the first time since I was a teenager 39 years ago. The greens are still tough and fair as ever. The course however is not the sparkling jewel it once was because of the California draught of the past few decades. Staff was first rate and friendly. Still a lovely course and challenge.
Greens great, rest of course was shockingly poor
The greens are great. Lets get that straight. However, I think the back 9 greens are smoother and cleaner than the front 9. Must have been done at different times.
The rest of course.... just fair. The fairways are about what you would expect with the dormant Bermuda grass. But what is shockingly poor are the rough, which is totally hit or miss and patchy and boggy and muddy and hard pan etc - you name it, you’ll get it all. Which is really bad, because they had only recently re-did the whole place only a few years ago. So sure, they’re paying attention to the greens, but the rest of the course has a lot to be desired - do the head greenskeeper not care or does he not know how to maintain it all?
The tee boxes are thrashed on a lot of them. If anything they ought to use the same Bermuda on the tee boxes so the maintenance would be minimal then, much easier. But because of the rye grass type they use on the tees and the rough, if it’s not looked after, it gets ripped to shreds and become very thin and patchy and muddy. Really not a very good look.
Oh the driving range...... seriously guys. Isn’t it about time you replaced those mats?? They are finished. There’s no top layer left on them. It’s been like that for probably 4 years!!! Unforgivable, really, for a place like this. Even the balls were bad now. They were dirty, scuffed, and clearly have not been replaced in a couple years. The range, as everybody knows, is just a nightmare here, and if the club cares, they would at least renew the mats and balls and make it look good and fun to practice or warm up. I will never warm up on these mats again - screws me up for the round.
POP was fine, about 4:30. Though on the back, we waited on every shot as the group ahead of us totally slowed down.
Place had got a lot of work to do.
Great value and course
Played Ike and we had a great round. Very challenging course and green is also in great condition. Will be back playing here again.
Worse than muni conditions
With the increased revenue courses are getting with full play everyday from Covid, you’d expect better conditions. Dormant to dead brown fairways and big dirt patches everywhere. LA munis seem in better shape. Greens were better, running around 9-10. Pace was around 4:45.
Great course
I loved the course , worst part is trying to get on it .
But wont stop me from trying again and again and again ....
Played at the IKE course for a practice round for the farmers insurance pre qualifier. I am a +1 handicapper and took almost 6 hours to finish. Just insane. Group in front of us would hit couple balls off the tee and they can barely hit 100 yards with the driver like come on. I respect them for playing the sport of golf but if you are playing at a resort especially from the blue/black tees, i expect something more. Anyhow, the conditions of the course was very dry. Fairways had brown spots and I do not remember fairways being rock solid. Not sure if this is what the course's intent. Greens were rolling fairly nice. Overall, very nice weather but delays were horrible due to group ahead. I would come back hoping round would be faster.
Yeah, this course is like this during the winter. It doesn’t shut down to overseed nor does it do any real maintenance during these cold months, other than maintain the greens. If it rains a lot like it did last year, then the course turns into a mud pile as it doesn’t drain very well with the undergrowth that holds the water. If it’s just dry and cold like this, then the mostly-Bermuda fairways gets dormant and without the water it can play firm.
Sounds like a typical 6 hour round? It’s a “resort course” but it also doesn’t charge very much, so a lot of wannabe golf hackers go here to play just because it’s an interesting layout with all the slopes. The course ought to charge $100 per geeen fee and use that money to shut down for a couple weeks to overseed but it won’t. It gets a lot of play because of the lower rates compared to similar courses with this kind of tournament layout. It’s one of our local pet peeves that the Qs are always held here because it’s the home of the PGA locally.
It shouldn’t even be on the rotation because it’s not walkable in the time they want people to play.
Just wait till the qualifier - it’ll take just as long because of the weather and because everybody’s playing too seriously. Last year’s Q took just under 6 hours so be ready!
Wow. That bad huh? Thanks for your review. I was about to book a time but decided against it after checking reviews on here. It’s usually pretty nasty around this time of year,. If it gets too much water the course doesn’t drain properly and turns into a mud pile. It also doesn’t overseed like other courses by shutting down so this semi-dormant look is expected for this type of public course with a cheap green fee that doesn’t spend the money to do any maintenance like shutting down during the winter months.
