Top 5 public course in Alabama
Worth the drive! One of the best courses in Alabama!
Great Course
First time to Limestone, loved the course!! Beautiful layout in the mountains, part of a very nice planned community. Jerry Pate carved out a spectacular course, with lots of rolling hills, elevated tee boxes along with numerous lakes and mountain streams. Course conditions outstanding in general. Fairways like carpet, greens were fast and rolled true. There were several small areas around lots of greens that were missing grass from the winter kill, common problem in this region from the cold winter.
Overall, great experience and super golf course, would play this one again.
A keeper near Birmingham
Admittedly, this review will be sparse on information. I last played Limestone Springs on a media bus tour through Alabama. We only had time for nine holes, but that loop left me wanting more. That trip opened my eyes to the beauty of Alabama's rolling hills. (My previous Alabama golf experiences were at Magnolia Grove and Muscle Shoals, two of the flatter courses along the RTJ Trail). I hope to make it back to finish my tour and get a better appreciation of what is consistently ranked one of the top public courses in the state.
Good course
Very good, fast greens, receptive on approach shots. Tee boxes and fairways good. At $94 regular for green fee and cart is over priced. After 2:00 it's $59 which is where it should be.
Good course
Tee boxes and fairways are good, greens were excellent, super fast and receptive to approach shots. Scenic holes. At $94 green fee and cart, it's overpriced, twilight starts at 2:00 and rate drops to $59, which is about right.
Solid, but didn't live up to the hype...
Positives - Good experience, and some of the most scenic golf I've played. Great layout, great greens, friendly staff, solid manicuring.
Negatives - for the prices/rates I expect a tight ship and a first class golf experience. Tee times don't exist I guess...as the same time we were supposed to tee off, a 5-some was at the box at the same time. The practice area is sub par (chopped up turf, small putting green, chipping area was a long way away and not maintained). Empty water coolers on the course. Lots of unrepaired divots on the greens.
My overall advice would be to play a twilight rate or grab a cheap Golfnow tee time. Don't want my review to scare people away, but to lower the hype of it being one of the top public tracks in the state. It's worth a play if you're nearby, but def not worth the $94 regular rate.
Perfect
Very fun course to play. Greens were nearly flawless and were fast and smooth. Beautiful piece of property I wish was closer to civilization. Staff was quick and helpful getting us out. Will definitely plan a return trip.
Wonderful course and surroundings....not quite what it used to be.
Everyone should try Limestone Springs. The course layout and the surroundings can't be beat. Although, I must say after having not played the course since 2010, I was sad to admit the course isn't as pristine as it once was. Several greens have burns around the edges, along with multiple patch jobs on greens and throughout. From tee, to fairway, to green, the course is still quite nice. Let's put it this way, I'd happily play there every day - but it's a fact the course appears to be diminishing.
Beautiful course that's seen better days and needs some updating of fairly simple things
There are almost no distance markers on the course. We spent most of our time trying to assess how far we were from various points. The course is overpriced for its current state and needs some improvements to warrant the cost. Still one of the most beautiful and fun venues around.
Great course! Great condition!
Challenging course that is very fun to play. Played it a few times and greens have always been challenging and pretty quick. The staff seems to work hard to keep course in good condition. Also located in a peaceful, serene setting. Highly recommended!
Hidden gem worth the (considerable) drive from B'ham
Grab breakfast @ Jack's on 79 'cuz ain't nothing out near course. Depending where you're coming from in B'ham, solid hour drive & no real town thereabouts.
That said, well worth drive still. Arrived hour early & course nearly deserted. Played by myself in 3 hrs. w/ out any pushing save getting out of coming rain. Few people encountered on course were retirees from surrounding real estate development & quite pleasant.
Course is great test, but conditions of greens - in particular - exceptional. Several different back tee combos make holes interesting for any distance hitter. Jerry Pate design & lad did himself proud. No gimmicks here, but not cookie-cutter either. Tricky false front long par 3 on front, nice touch. Ball must be worked both ways throughout & run-up approach shots needed to some front pin placements.
Only minor complaints: Ball washers didn't work on 3 holes & yardage markers scarce [Bring your device].
Didn't use, but looked over practice facilities - absolutely gorgeous. Flat range w/ grass & full short game area in back.
Will go back w/ clients. Just don't expect a logo shirt if you're XXL.
hidden gem
This is the second time I've played the course. The first was about 2 years ago and I remembered it being awesome. Went back when I got back to the area last week and it was even better than I remembered.
Beautiful and scenic
Limestone is one of the prettiest courses around. There is a lot of elevation change. The greens were receptive and very fast. (they were hosting a college tournament that same weekend) I definitely recommend this to anyone that has never been.
