great scenery and elevation change
i really like this course. rarely an even lie (by design hah), lots of interesting tee and approach shots. gives you plenty of opportunity to choose how to play a hole, risk/reward tee shot on six is great from the elevated tee. tricky greens that roll well enough for this bogey-ish golfer.
pace of play can be an issue, but that's hardly unique to this place for better or worse.
Average Day
The pace of play was very slow. There was no on course management or field Marshall.
The fairways were solid and the greens were too.
The tee boxes need a little TLC
Very slow but nice course
First I should say I play here frequently so although the course has issues it's one of the nicer courses close to where I live. Pros - I love the layout, very challenging for a high handicap player and the good sticks as well. It's also very scenic. You can usually get good deals here between $35-$55.
Cons - the pace of play, be prepared for a 5-6 hour round. They just always pack to many players on the course. Bring your own food. There is no food on the turn, there is occasionally a beer cart and when there is you will likely only see it once. The restaurant has crappy food that's overpriced and they are super slow.
Great staff! Course did have some drainage issues but we did have a lot of rain.
Doubt I will ever come back unless they demolish the place and rebuild
Hate to write reviews like this, but...first off, the parking lot is ridiculously small. Had to park a long ways away, past a gate off the main road. Maybe it was built during a time when it was more common to ride your horse to the course. Second, the clubhouse...I couldn’t find it at first, all I saw was what looked like a large shed...oh wait, that shed is the clubhouse?? I’m not expecting something you’d see at a TPC course everywhere I go, but I think it’s a bad sign when the clubhouse looks like where they might be hosing down carts. Third, the first tee box is about the size of a walk-in closet, and it’s right by the main entrance road, where there’s a steady rotation of cars coming in and...looking for parking. A bit distracting, just a tiny bit. Fourth, seemed like every group ahead was painfully slow. Waited 30+ minutes to tee off, and i Believe there was exactly two holes the rest of the way where we did not have to wait more than 5 minutes. Took 3 hours to play the front 9. Overall it was kind of a surreal experience, and I don’t mean that in a good way.
Positives...course doesn’t have many flat areas, good if you like having a variety of lies. It had been raining quite a bit, course was soft, but still in decent shape. Price was cheap, but...see above. You get what you pay for,
Getting better
Have played this course many times and have, in the past, been very disappointed in course conditions. Today’s experience left me hopeful that there is a new commitment to maintenance. Staffing was a bit of an issue this time but one thing at a time, I suppose.
Nice layout
Crystal golf course offers an interesting layout in few holes. Green were in good condition.
Good challenging course but stay away when wet
I really like Crystal Springs course. It's challenging but also a joy to play and conquer... except after rains when the course becomes soggy and it becomes a "cart path only" experience.
Walking greatly slows down the pace of play on this long and hilly course.
Nevertheless, there is never a bad day for golf, right?
Could improve pace of play
I have always enjoyed Crystal Springs- the vistas are beautiful and the layout has a variety of holes and shots. Its overall condition is that of a municipal course, but its a trade-off.
It doesn't matter when I play there though, early - late in the day , winter, spring , summer, or fall - it is always SLOW. It is rare that a round is less than 5 hours, and its a shame.
The fairways are wide , and the targets reasonable - so I don't think its course difficulty...it doesn't seem that out-of-bounds or lost balls are the problem.
I can only believe the course aligns one too many slots per hour and does nothing to the monitor pace of play .
Why I came back....
Well, I tried it again, and again...It got the best of me! =D Some day, I'll get a respectable score...until next time!
All was good except
Tee time spacing needs serious improvement. We played on Saturday. It took us 4 hours to play 11 holes. There were groups on every tee box, fairway and green
Great deal
It was a rainy day so the course was pretty empty. The course was in great shape and the staff was very helpful and friendly
Great greens and fairways
The course if in great shape. There fairways and greens are in fantastic shape. There is also a first cut of ruff.
