Heron Lakes Golf Club - Greenback Course
About
Heron Lakes Golf Club is home to two championship courses designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, the Great Blue Course and the Greenback Course. Both utilize the rugged natural terrain in different ways, offering challenges that will appeal to both low and high handicappers. The Greenback Course is a versatile parkland layout that is gentle enough for beginners to approach with confidence. It is a less demanding design than the Great Blue but it still has plenty of challenges in store. There are 86 bunkers framing the elevated greens and six ponds come into play throughout however the mature trees present the most prominent threat. The par 3s on this golf course can be especially tough. The more challenging elements are nicely balanced by large, inviting greens and generous landing areas.

Herron Lakes, Greenback Course
I love playing this golf course. I should have called to find out the course conditions before I booked my round. The course was very, very wet due to heavy rainfall. The greens were still in great shape, but fairways and the roughs were soggy and water logged.
To early in the year
Too early in the season to play this course too wet too much goose droppings too many lost balls do to plug in not a good value for this time of year other courses charging half as much i will not play this course again until conditions change
Favorite Course
Great day for golf. I am a regular at Heron Lakes, golfing on a regular basis. Course was not busy, finished in 3 hr 45 min, in a twosome. The course has always been in great shape, but discovered some kind of a fungus in the fairways. However, the greens were in excellent shape, rolled true and fair. They will be plugging and sanding the greens soon, so I will take a couple of weeks off. The course is run very professional, and the staff is very friendly.
good value
The greenback course is the little brother to the great blue course at heron lakes. It is a good layout and in great shape. The greens are top notch both in design and in condition. Not difficult off the tee but plenty of character nonetheless!
Nice layout, Poorly maintained
I've played here a lot and the greens are particularly bad this summer. There are large dirt patches on the 7th, 8th and 9th greens. It's been a abnormally dry summer but this is more fungus or disease than just dormant grass.
Chewed up
I have played this course numerous times in the last 20 years it's never in perfect shape, but I've never seen as bad as our round yesterday. Many of the green are flat out embarrassing. They are burned out, bumpy and barely playable. The decent greens have ball marks all over them that are never repaired. The tee boxes and fairways are totally chewed up. There were sand traps under repair and the rest were in terrible shape. The Greenback course is a very poor value based on the conditions provided.
ball marks
There are more ball marks on the greens of this course than on Elton John's chin. A couple of the greens are in dire need of repair.
Burnt greens
Fun course but a few of the greens are burnt/dead. Also, no hard alcohol on the "cart" which translates to no Bloody Mary's.
Room for improvement
I do enjoy playing this course, but…too many players do not repair ball marks on greens(and many of those who do are making a messy repair), and too many players do not rake bunkers. Considering tees two factors, the course still plays pretty well, and is fun to play.
While we're young...
Apparently they are unaware of the recent ad campaign to speed up the pace of play. Absolutely dreadful. Lame excuses from the marshall about a foursome that was walking (no evidence of any groups walking), people stopping to get something to eat at the turn (really?) bah, blah, blah. Bottom line is, if you are going to have a marshall, get one that will do his job and encourage people to play at a decent pace before you send them out to play.
This is simply a very nice course to play.
This is simply a very comfortable course to play - with many wide fairways and accessible greens -- and with just enough obstacles to keep it interesting. I would definitely play this course again.
Heron Lakes
This was my first time playing the Heron Lakes course & I was impressed with the condition of the course. I played the Greenback course and it was a very walkable round and a challenging course. I had a great time.
Spring round
The greens have healed nicely from the aeration this spring and were rolling nice. The fairways were firm for this time of year. I found myself in a couple of fairway bunkers and there wasn't much sand. I think the Greenback could really benefit from leveling a lot of the tees. The tees are a nice size and provide plenty of room to move the markers around, but they were placed in some pretty unlevel positions today which basically forced all the golfers to one side if they wanted a level lie for their tee shots.
heron lakes green back
Great course for the money. It really favors the right handed slicer. Greens are in pretty good condition.
First time in Years
We played on Monday and the weather was great, played in shirt sleeves in February!! The course had dried out nicely, had been mowed and were currently mowing that day. The greens were in pretty good shape considering this is late February. The pin placements were fair, not punitive, but the Tee boxes were a little rough, although certainly not bad. This course definitely plays different from Blue tees, which is why I played the White tees on the back nine.
Overall condition was good and a very good value. I will come back and play again this spring.
Our go to for a fun round of golf!
We love Heron lakes, it is inexpensive and always fun. It is not the most challenging course, however we do tend to lose a ball everytime. Easy to get to from downtown, barely ever have to wait for people, and a good range of distances. I always recommend Heron Lakes, as it is my first choice for a fun, inexpensive, round of golf in the Portland area.
GOOD GOLF, BAD CLUB DOUBLE WIDE
ITS TWO GREAT LAYOUTS TO PLAY GOLF @ AND A GREAT $$. BUTTTT...THE CONDITION OF THE GOLF COURSE WAS VERY WET AND SOFT MANY PLUGGED LIES WHICH IN THE NW IS PAR FOR A COURSE. BUT ITS TIME TO PUT AN DESENT CLUB HOUSE @ THIS FACILITY. A DELAPADATED DOUBLE WIDE TRAILER IS NO WAY TO TREAT TWO ROBERT TRENT JONES JR GOLF COURSES. JUST IMAGINE HOW GREAT THIS PLACE COULD BE. THANKS
winter golf
Soggy, Soggy, Soggy. Bring your mudders. They need about a week without rain until this course firms up a bit. Every shot in the fairways plugged and there is allot of standing water. Besides this, the greens were in great shape.
