Heron Lakes Golf Club - Greenback Course
About
Heron Lakes Golf Club is home to two championship courses designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, the Great Blue Course and the Greenback Course. Both utilize the rugged natural terrain in different ways, offering challenges that will appeal to both low and high handicappers. The Greenback Course is a versatile parkland layout that is gentle enough for beginners to approach with confidence. It is a less demanding design than the Great Blue but it still has plenty of challenges in store. There are 86 bunkers framing the elevated greens and six ponds come into play throughout however the mature trees present the most prominent threat. The par 3s on this golf course can be especially tough. The more challenging elements are nicely balanced by large, inviting greens and generous landing areas.

Spring round
The greens have healed nicely from the aeration this spring and were rolling nice. The fairways were firm for this time of year. I found myself in a couple of fairway bunkers and there wasn't much sand. I think the Greenback could really benefit from leveling a lot of the tees. The tees are a nice size and provide plenty of room to move the markers around, but they were placed in some pretty unlevel positions today which basically forced all the golfers to one side if they wanted a level lie for their tee shots.
heron lakes green back
Great course for the money. It really favors the right handed slicer. Greens are in pretty good condition.
First time in Years
We played on Monday and the weather was great, played in shirt sleeves in February!! The course had dried out nicely, had been mowed and were currently mowing that day. The greens were in pretty good shape considering this is late February. The pin placements were fair, not punitive, but the Tee boxes were a little rough, although certainly not bad. This course definitely plays different from Blue tees, which is why I played the White tees on the back nine.
Overall condition was good and a very good value. I will come back and play again this spring.
Our go to for a fun round of golf!
We love Heron lakes, it is inexpensive and always fun. It is not the most challenging course, however we do tend to lose a ball everytime. Easy to get to from downtown, barely ever have to wait for people, and a good range of distances. I always recommend Heron Lakes, as it is my first choice for a fun, inexpensive, round of golf in the Portland area.
GOOD GOLF, BAD CLUB DOUBLE WIDE
ITS TWO GREAT LAYOUTS TO PLAY GOLF @ AND A GREAT $$. BUTTTT...THE CONDITION OF THE GOLF COURSE WAS VERY WET AND SOFT MANY PLUGGED LIES WHICH IN THE NW IS PAR FOR A COURSE. BUT ITS TIME TO PUT AN DESENT CLUB HOUSE @ THIS FACILITY. A DELAPADATED DOUBLE WIDE TRAILER IS NO WAY TO TREAT TWO ROBERT TRENT JONES JR GOLF COURSES. JUST IMAGINE HOW GREAT THIS PLACE COULD BE. THANKS
winter golf
Soggy, Soggy, Soggy. Bring your mudders. They need about a week without rain until this course firms up a bit. Every shot in the fairways plugged and there is allot of standing water. Besides this, the greens were in great shape.
Was a good walking course
Course is pretty good even with a lot of water holes to watch out for.
Heron Lakes Greenback
Course is in pretty good shape for wintertime in Portland. There is some mud out there but the course is playable. Greens are a bit on the slow side but they roll pretty true.
Course conditions poor
It saddens me to give a poor review to one of my favorite courses. I've played this course for over two decades and it's in the worst shape ever. Fairways were baked out and greens were pock marked with areas of disease, different sand(textures) in bunkers.
New management company comes in raises fees and spends little money on maintenance. This course has never had a decent clubhouse facility(promised for years) so food and beverage quality is unknown.
Just disappointing.
Excellent value
Excellent value. The course is pretty forgiving and some good risk reward holes.
Hit'em straight
Pushy rangers and starter.
Great golf now price and pro shop staff. Practice green also nice.
Good Value
For the money Heron is a really good course, both the Blue & Greenback, worth the drive from Beaverton. You do have to be okay with sand as there is lots on both courses but very nice course designs, interesting layouts.
Great time
This course packs a ton of value. It's an old style course with a ton if character to it. Trees, lakes and birds a plenty. Very much enjoyed my round yesterday which is why I'm posting this review!
Great course
Great course for the price. Little less difficult than the blues. Ample time to grip it and rip it.
Love the course, Hate the men's club !
We played in a 4some. Leaving 15 minutes after the last men's club group had tee'd off. We waited on 17 of 18 holes. The men's club was playing some best ball tournament and each guy thought he was Watson or Woods or Michelson, plumb bobbing 3 footers and shanking it left and and shanking it right. It took 5 hours to get around behind these guys and the Marshal kept telling them to speed up ! The better we played and the faster we went through holes, the slower the men's group did.
My advice if you get put behind the men's group, get a raincheck !
British open day!
The course was hard and fast; greens were super speedy and rock hard. Most everything ran over the greens. Shot my worst round of the year with 8 three putts.
Green back 18
We played the easier of the 2 18's and it was tough enough! The staff were all super friendly and helpful. Their priority is clearly on the course, not the pro shop or good and beverage facility. But the food was fine and well priced.
We'll be back!
enjoyable course
The staff is friendly and helpful. We used a cart b/ c it was our first time playing there. It will be an easy course to walk. The mgt really stresses pace of play in documentation on cards and cart. However we found it to be pretty slow and ended up not finishing b/c it was just taking too long ( we were a twosome playing behind foursomes). We were given a $10 rain check so that was nice. Will definitely go back.
Have Played it for years.
This course gets a lot of play and at times can show it. The greens were in good shape, like they usually are, but the fairways have gone down hill somewhat over the last 5 - 7 years. I have played this course early mornings for the last 14 years. It has seen better days. It is still a good deal for 18, but a little pricey for 9 holes. It can get slow on weekends and later in the day. Generally a good deal if you can get on.
