Heron Lakes Golf Club - Greenback Course
About
Heron Lakes Golf Club is home to two championship courses designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, the Great Blue Course and the Greenback Course. Both utilize the rugged natural terrain in different ways, offering challenges that will appeal to both low and high handicappers. The Greenback Course is a versatile parkland layout that is gentle enough for beginners to approach with confidence. It is a less demanding design than the Great Blue but it still has plenty of challenges in store. There are 86 bunkers framing the elevated greens and six ponds come into play throughout however the mature trees present the most prominent threat. The par 3s on this golf course can be especially tough. The more challenging elements are nicely balanced by large, inviting greens and generous landing areas.

Fun . Classic Parkland Layout
Showed up as a single. Pared with a fun group of regulars. Couse is interesting . Recommend
Sand on the par 3's
The pars threes are in very poor shape with out any sand.
#7 is probably the worst par 3 I have seen in the area
Greenback Heron Lakes
Greens were in great condition, there were a number of areas near the edge of fairways that needed some attention. (thin to no grass and not watered) Overall probably the best value in Portland. Pace of play was good, 4 hours on the dot, but I have seen it slower at times. Once again, the greens are great for a city owned course, smooth, and decent speed.
One Groundskeeper Made the Day HORRIBLE!!!
Great layout great, pace of play slow, course conditions - needs work, Staff - Check- In Great, Starter Great, but one Groundskeeper was very RUDE, Inconsiderate and RUINED the day!
Slow Pace
The pace of play was about 5:30 which is slow. Too many people on the course with no marshal.
Great course. Young staff needs help
Love both courses! Young gals that work in clubhouse at food are typically on their phones and lack customer service. If I was their boss cell phones would not be allowed
No geese poop
Finally not too much goose poop on the course!
Maybe some time they will fill in the par 3 mine fields!
Greens and fairways
Greens were in good shape EXCEPT full of unfixed ball marks. Fairways spotty with too many scalped parts
I like this link style layout. It’s not as long as other courses, only 4-5 miles if walking which about 50% do.
Needs help
Greens poor, bunkers poor, fairways spotty. Has not been any rain recently, but what greens watering that has happened runs off to bunkers making muddy mess.
The course needs help!
The greens keepers have got to do a better job! I know we have not had any rain lately but it looks like all the watering has ruined the bunkers. Mud and washed out sand, even some standing water in them. Nobody even bothers to rake them. The course is turning into a second rate muni. Not the gem it used to be. I've asked Kemper many many times to put more effort into course maintenance....EXCUSES EXCUSES EXCUSES. Won't be playing it again anytime soon.
Slow
Slowest course ever. Expect to play 4:30+
12/13 is a death trap (fairways/landing areas very close) so keep your head up! Or down?
Still the best public course close in pdx!
No break Heron Lake!
