#9 green, right in front of the clubhouse was by far the best conditioned of the day! Photo submitted by u547358672 on 03/15/2023

Poor Sand some bumpy greens
Don't hit it in the sand traps, they are all horrible. Not raked and the sand is like beach sand, too soft to hit out of. Some of the greens need to be sanded again after they arified, especially the edges of the greens, if they could put a little more attention to the greens and bunkers the track would be in excellent shape. Greens are really fast and firm
Great afternoon
I played at 4pm with a buddy for a quick, last minute round. Course looked great and staff was friendly.
Great time
Grey Rock was a great course to play for a day. The greens were a little fast on some of the holes, but once you adjusted for them it was great. It would be great if we had more water b/c the few holes with water it is basically out of play, but it was still very fun. It's a little too pricey to play everyday, but it was fun for a special treat.
Surprisingly Nice
Nice course in good condition. Great range to warm up on and starters and rangers kept things ontime and moving. Played in four hours on a crowded Saturday. The greens roll really nice and are very firm.
Good layout amongst beautiful oaks.
$45 off of Golfnow which should be the very most ever paid to play here. Not sure what normal green fees are but more than $45 and you can find a better deal elsewhere. Great sand in the bunkers, fairways are playable but not great. Greens are slow but true. It's a nice parkland style course. Pro shop had some interesting golf things you normally wouldn't see which was cool. My only complain would have been the beverage girl. She was begging me to purchase beer at 9:30 in the morning. Cart path route is a little bizarre but it works. $45 course and nothing more.
Good Track - Poor Condition
I'd really like to give this place a 4-5 star rating, but the condition of the greens and pace of play just don't warrant that. This was the 5th time I've played Grey Rock. I really like the layout, it has a couple easy holes, some challenging ones, and you end up using a number of different shots and clubs.
The staff is very professional and friendly, although they should seriously consider a marshal or two roaming the course to help with pace of play. It took us 3:00 to play the first 11 holes, and then only 1:00 to play the last 7, once we finally got the foursome in front to let us play through. We didn't catch the group in front of them until 17 - and this was midday on a Thusday!
The greens were beat - at a time of year that most courses around here are in their best shape. I mean, these looked like an elephant wearing baseball cleats tap-danced on them. Really disappointing, and it doesn't look like they'll be coming back any time soon.
This was a great deal, wish they would post these type of deals at great courses more often. Too many course fees are too high for the average player.
Would definitely play this course again. More great courses should have great deals like this.
Still waiting for all 18.
Getting tied of playing 17 holes. Home of the 4 hour round? How long will it take when all 18 are open? It's a great course. Staff is friendly and helpful but I will not recommend until all renovations are completed. Also, I think the value is diminished when required to hit warm up balls off the matt.
Still the best value in Austin
Grey Rock remains my favorite daily fee course in Austin. Unfortunately I only got to play 17/18's of the course. Hole #2 is under construction. No mention at check in. No mention by the starter. Totally unacceptable. Also the greens were punched about a month ago and are still a bit sandy.
the course was was not in very good condition. Having played there in previous years, I was dispppointed with the conditions.
The course was not in ready for play conditions. It looked like that no watering had been done on the course.
the number 2 hole was closed as new sand traps were being added to the hole.
The tee boxes required extensive power to get the tee into the ground.
I would not play there again until after I had been to the course and seen what had occurred
They don't care if you have a good experience or not!
Nice layout, but course was in terrible condition and hole number 4 was closed. My thought is that if you make a tee time they should inform you of an entire hole being closed. This along with their "I don't care" attitude about it really irritated me. I won't be back.
Average Experience
Has a nice clubhouse and good practice facilities. When I played the course, it was a little beat up and dry. Hole layouts were foregiving but nothing too exciting.
I played this course because of 50% off green fees. I think that still might have been too much.
Good course but greens not good
Needs to be maintained and the fact the fifth hole was closed due to repair. They still charged price and dint let you know that it was closed
Tight course, unforgiving OB, petite greens
Windy on day that we played making tee shots challenging, glad I had plenty of balls as OB is left natural with limestone outcroppings. Hole #5 was closed, so par was the score! Had a fivesome in front of us that loved to linger around greens, causing our round to get close to the 5 hr mark. I had not played this course in awhile, probably not again any time soon! Greens were small overall, good speed but tough to hold (hard).
This is a great course but in poor condition.
Grey Rock is one of my favorite courses and I was looking forward to playing it, as was the others in our foursome. We were very disappointed in the condition of the course. The fairways were like cow pastures with weeds as high as 4 inches, nothing was green and most lies on the fairways were tight. The greens were overseeded(I called and asked about the course condition before booking and they said it was in great shape).
There was a tournament that just finished as we started and there were 3 groups of 2 from the tournament wanting to play again and as we teed off. after several holes we let the first 2some play through then the marshal asked us to let 2 St Edwards girls who were practicing play through. Needless to say both groups started to hold us up. This threw us out of rhythm then the marshal asked us to let another St Eds 2some play through and another 2some from the tournament taking a replay. We normally play a round in about 4 hours but because the marshal kept asking us to let 2somes play through we spent over 5 hours.
We usually play Forest Creek, Avery Ranch and Terra Vista because Grey Rock is almost an hour drive. Even though $44 dollars is not dirt cheap it was enough of a discount to get us to make the drive to what had been one of our favorite courses we don't get to play often. It's sad that things turned out as they did.
I have to wonder if the course is under new management. We noticed that even small things such as towels in the carts were no longer there.
Nice course no drink coolers
I like the course but am tired of them not having coolers for drinks or beer. Not a good place to entertain customers.
Golf course was in poor condition after sanding. Was not told that they had just sanded greens. Greens just aweful
I would not have paid $70 each for us to play this course if I had known they had just sanded the greens. Not even $35. I would have played somewhere else. The course is very nice, other than our terrible experience for the money because of sanding the greens. They should have charged only $20 to play.
What Happened?
Grey Rock used to be one of my favorite courses, but I was extremely disappointed on my last outing. Not only was the course in awful shape, but there were no marshals in sight to control pace of play with 2 drunk yahoos playing a couple groups ahead of us. I heard they were re-sanding all the bunkers, but it looked more like a construction zone on a few of the holes. If you're considering playing this course, I would recommend you call ahead. Disappointing.
Feels like family
I come here every other year while visiting family in town. During that time I come here on 4-5 occasions in a two week span. Everyone is very friendly and staff even remember me after being gone a year.
I would recommend this course everyday and I look forward to playing here again.
poor quality, expensive
Overall, this is a great course. However, for the money they want people to play there, it's ridiculous. $75 on a Sunday morning and they don't even tell you they just aerated the greens. Not only that, some of the sand traps were awful. The fairways looked really poor too. Obviously not watered enough even coming out of the late winter months. If you get a deal, you may consider playing here as it is picturesque but at full price, you're better playing somewhere else.
