Delay notification
I had a 9:20 tee time. When I arrived the clubhouse was closed and no staff member except for the cook.
Clubhouse was finally opened around 10 and that’s when we were notified of the delay till 11am. The staff was friendly but there should have been a notification on the website letting those with tee time of the delay in advance of just finding out on the day of play.
Staff Friendliest
I normally give an overall rating of 5 stars for all aspects of the course and club. However today was an exception. The temperature this morning caused the course to delay open which in turn caused those of us with early tee times to cancel. Prior to driving from Arlington, I called plenty of times to check on the course status. Nobody answered. I drove to Reston National and upon arriving at 8:30 for my 9:10 tee time , nobody was on site. After trying both doors to the club house, I walked away dejected. Prior to reaching my car, a staff person came out and notified me that the course wouldn’t open until the temperature was above 36 degrees. This information would’ve been helpful if posted to the website or if someone could’ve answered the phone from inside the clubhouse.
COVID overplay
The course is a great layout and I really enjoy playing here. Nearly every course in the mid-Atlantic has suffered from COVID overplay and a rough summer. Played here in April 2020 and the course was pristine then. The fairways were in really good shape. The greens were a little inconsistent in speed and bumpy...likely due to poa in the greens. Some greens had some damage from weather burnout as well as improperly replaced cups. Overall...ok.. The tee boxes were mostly sand and in a few cases, barren of any grass. We played from the black tees and there wasn't much option for moving the tees forward or back...the entire box was in rough shape. Practice facility is excellent with many options for targets and short game practice. No course was exempt from the year to be forgotten. Some did manage better than others. Will definitely return in the future. I do expect further recovery and better conditions the next round. Overall grade: B-
Conditions and Speed were great
Course conditions were really good for early December and played after overnight rain. Overall I thought the quality of the course was fantastic but only criticism is the course design. Other than the par 3's, this course is just driver and doesn't really make you thing off the tees too much. Most greens protected by bunkers adding some challenge (I managed to get in more than a few). Greens were adequate after the rain and have decent undulations making you work a bit for your putts. Would recommend and would probably play again.
Change to your tee tkme
The title to my review matches the subject line I received from the course about the frost delay. If I’m told there is a 2 hour frost delay I am going to show up 2 hours later. If you want me to still show up for my original tee time then include that in the email. The starter wasn’t happy with me but I was far more disappointed in him as I told him the clubhouse gladly accepted my money without telling me anything. His response of “we can always give you your money back” almost elicited a foul mouth response had he not run inside so quickly. Thankfully the manager came out and took one glance at the tee sheet and saw that the entire 4 some due up next had not shown and I was able to walk straight to the first tee!
Challenging Course; Great Staff
I always enjoy playing at Reston National. The staff is friendly and helpful and the course is challenging. The course had been in a little rough shape a couple of months ago, but it has come back nicely. Always an enjoyable round!
Great day
The course seems to have recovered from the beating it took over the summer. With the better temperatures now, anyone who plays here will have a great and challenging time.
