Get out there early
Played is course probably a dozen times, its a good track with a lot of variety. Course is always kept up well and greens can be challenging. Only thing I recommend is to get out early in the morning because I've played this course in 3.5 hrs but also in 5.5hrs in the afternoon because it gets slow when its crowded which it usually is.
Course was in good shape but a few foursomes hurt the experience.
The Good: The course was in great shape. Many greens had been recently sanded but I don't fault the course for maintaining the conditions. The traps had recently been refilled and were in much better condition than the time I'd played there two weeks earlier. Overall, given the location and the course conditions, the $50 GN price of was worth it.
The Bad: Played on a pretty early tee time to get done in time for work. Unfortunately, two foursomes in front of our twosome decided it was the US Open and took 5 minutes over every putt. They were so slow that we caught up to the second foursome by the 9th hole even though they teed off almost an hour before us. Nobody was interested in letting anybody play through. The big complaint here is that there was no Ranger keeping tabs on the pace of play. We ended up skipping two holes just to drive past the two foursomes and finish our round in a reasonable amount of time.
Not a bad track, just a bit pricey to play.
Played on father's day weekend and had an enjoyable round. Took 5 hrs. not bad on holiday weekend. Condition were pretty good but at 90 a little steep for RN. More probably due to location than worth.
Super Expensive!
Nice course, just in an expensive area! Wherever you play around NOVA will be expensive. $89 for Reston is a bit steep! Look for the hot deals. Fun course though
Love the course but very, very slow play.
Up until last Friday 14 June 2013 Reston National was my favorite course in the area to play. Unfortunately, last Friday, I had the worst experience ever on a golf course while playing there and therefore will NEVER return. Although we had a 1:08 pm t-time we did not get out until 1:35pm because there was a tournament in the morning and the course was backed up. No real big deal; this happens. What happened next however was a nightmare. The foursome that played in front of us consisted of two older gentlemen and a father and his 12 year old son who kept taking mulligans and could only hit the ball 20 or 30 yards at a time. If there were not talking repeated shots they were looking for their balls in the woods. One time it took them 17 minutes to get half way down a par four. When our threesome asked if we could play through they said no because the people in front of them were playing slow. Not true in that the foursome in front of them were very good golfers. The four elderly women in front of this foursome however were also horrible hitting only 20 or 30 yards at a time. The bottom line it took us almost 4 hours to play nine holes and 7 1/2 hours to play 18 holes. This is totally ridiculous and UNACCEPTABLE. To make matters worse on the front nine we never saw an official and had to ask the refreshment girl to find someone to talk to them. It was not until the beginning of the second nine holes did an official (a woman and then a young man) talk to the foursome in front of us not one but three I REPEAT three separate times throughout the day I did everything in my power to control my anger and went straight to my car afterwards so that I did not confront them. An Absolute horrible day and I will NEVER play there again. .
There are better options
I moved to Reston last year and was hoping to make Restion National my home course. But it didn't take many rounds there for me to start looking elsewhere.
The staff is friendly and the facilities are nice but there's not much value you're getting with your $45+ round (unless you find a good GN deal). Everyone complains about slow pace of play, but here it is consistently so. You'll rarely if ever see a course ranger around to speed up play and 3 and 4 group log-jams are not uncommon.
Slow play of course can be overcome with quality environment but while this course features a variety of holes, they are not as well-maintained as other courses in the area. Fairways have bare spots, the rough is clumpy, and the greens are frequently and harshly aerated--nearly unplayable for two full weeks after each treatment.
You might get lucky and find the course uncrowded and in good condition for your round, but there are better and less expensive options in the area, most notably Herndon Centennial, which remains my home course.
Good experience
Our tee-time was delayed about 20 minutes while two foursomes from a morning tournament finished their final hole but it was otherwise a good experience at Reston. The course was in excellent shape which I guess should be expected this time of year. The greens were very well kept, sometimes hard to get a good read on, and fast. We had a good day and I would say this course is definitely one of those Northern Virginia courses everyone ought to play.
Just your average course.
Not that interesting of a course, a couple good holes but most were straight and unimaginative. I got the tee time for 25% off so I wasn't too upset, I would have been if I paid full price. Apparently the course is on the verge of going under and the conditions reflect that.
This course is one of the best I've played since moving to NVA!
I had a great time. Second time visit was even more enjoyable than the first one. Hole layouts make you think about every shot. I like courses that force me to use every club in my bag and this place does exactly that. Love the greens! Very true with a fair amount of subtle twists and turns to keep it interesting. Good test of skills all around. The added bonus is the friendly staff. From the pro shop, to the starter, and all the way to the lovely drinks cart goddess, first class all the way. Looking forward to my next visit.
Greens great but fast
The greens are in great condition, firm and fast - present a real putting test, however the fairways are a little beaten up and need some attention, and the rough is a little long
Reston National - Good course, good price, tough greens
Great price for 18 holes and cart and the course was in very good condition. Greens were challenging following previous day's rain but overall a really fun course to play that requires good ball striking and decision making on the approach.
Great shape......sooooo slow
Course was in a good shape, great even for a heavily played public course. But the pace of play was terrible. Times are spaced 8 minutes apart, so you get backed up on 1. We went off 25 minutes after our tee time. Then you start your 5 hour round w/o any marshall. This course plays a lot of lip service to pace of play, but basically let a couple groups back up the entire course. 5.5 hours if you factor in our delay off 1, which I do.
Brutal Pace of Play This Time Out
A regular here at Reston and usually enjoy my round, but we were met with a 3 group backup on #2 and endured a 2 hour, 45 minute front 9. Opened up on the back and finished in 5 hours but pace of play was completely lost by then. Luckily it was a nice day.
Course is good shape, especially for this time of year and the greens rolled true with few ball marks.
Paid 55 through golf now for an 1:30 tee time, good value, but because of the slow play (which Reston has a little bit of reputation of) not as good as it could have been.
Still, due to the greens and the proximity to Arlington, I'll be back.
