Course is coming back
Course is coming back. Fairways aren't burnt up. They still need to do something about the teeboxes, though. The white teeboxes are the most used tee boxes and they just look like bunkers. We've gone beyond sad and have arrived at pathetic. There's really no valid excuse for this lack of maintenance. Any staff worth their salt knows that, even if you don't want to move the teeboxes around for all the tees like you should, you HAVE to move around the most used teebox or it's going to get just destroyed in a few weeks. Reston National is unable to grasp this very basic concept and, for that reason alone, the general manager should lose his job. He stands convicted of his own actions. Not one word needs to be said for or against him. Just go to every teebox and green and decide after 18, if you haven't made the call by then, if this guy deserves to keep his job or not. Speaking of greens, they're not as bad as they were a few weeks ago, but that's strictly due to the change in weather. It's obvious that they are not being cared for either. The fairways did not seem as torn up as they were a few weeks to a month ago, which is likely almost entirely due to getting some water from the recent rains.
Aside from that, staff is nice, but I'm starting to accept that this is entirely dependent on who happens to be working, as some of them just shouldn't be in customer facing positions. That said, the vast majority of the staff are not just polite but they are actually nice and trying to make sure that you enjoy your day.
The bottom line for this course, in my opinion, is that based on the prices that other courses are charging, this is probably the best value in the area. I would say there are only two courses that would challenge the value here and I would say that one of them isn't in the same category, so it's not a fair comparison. The two courses that would challenge Reston National for best value are Stonewall(of course) and Herndon Centennial(ok, I know, but hear me out). Herndon Centennial is a well maintained course that, because of it's simplicity and lack of length, is a really good course to build your confidence or to break whatever score you've been trying to break. You want to break 100 from the whites or blues? Go to Centennial. It's like playing from the reds at Reston or Stonewall. So, the only "big boy" course that I would say could challenge Reston for value would be Stonewall. Stonewall is just a massive upgrade all the way around and so there's no point in breaking it down, point by point.
Worst Shape Ever
Fairways are not healthy with bare spots on almost ever hole. Rough hadn’t been cut in so long the grass laid over and no ball could be found unless you were standing directly over it. Charged $40 for a cart!
Great layout, condition is poor
I have been playing this course for about 25 years, on and off. It used to be in fantastic shape, but the pace of play was typically around 5 hours. Especially if you teed off after 10am. Pace had improved, but the conditions have suffered.
Tee boxes and fairways were in very poor condition. Rough was so long, you could lose a ball right under your feet. I found 12 balls within 15 feet of the fairway. Greens were mostly in good shape, but rolled very slow, unlike the practice green which was great. Driving range is great, but price of alls was higher than most places and the balls are pretty beat up.
The walking rate was only 59 so at least it was a reasonable price.
Food and drinks are good and also reasonably priced.
Good shape
Course is in pretty good shape, greens and fairways nice
Might as well light your greens fee on fire
This course has become an embarrassment to the game. Conditions are nearly unplayable. Every time I’ve played here the last 5 years I hope it’s gonna be different. Every time it has gotten worse and worse. I will never play this course again. The owners of this course are stealing your money, do not play here.
Just stay home
This is the worst golf course I’ve played in my entire life
Going downhill
Place just keeps getting worse. Poor pace, of course, but staff is getting less friendly/professional. The women in the pro shop keep walking away from the pro shop to hang out in the concession area, or whatever they're doing. Even if nobodys in the pro shop, you should still answer the phone. You should also be there when customers come in, so they don't have to go looking for you. Course maintenance is non existent, based on how fast the course is deteriorating. Just in the last couple of months, its gone from pretty nice to completely burned up. They're not moving the tee boxes, so the whites are basically just dirt, at this point
Course had a lot of dead areas
Wouldn’t play again till areas are repaired or given time to regrow for price charged
Great round!
Lovely course, never disappoints. A bit dry here and there but you have to expect that in August. Otherwise, very nice course w nice staff!
Good course, poor pace
Pretty much the same. Generally speaking, staff is friendly. Not Westfields, South Riding, or Stonewall friendly, but still more friendly than average, like Centennial. Course is still in good shape, greens were excellent. Had a bit of bad luck and got stuck behind a slow foursome. It happens. Last time I was there at the same time, 940am, on a Saturday we finished in three and a half hours. Course is very gettable and fun.
Course is in terrible shape
I’ve played Reston national quite a few times and the conditions are worse every time. They barely mow anything, so the course tee to green is very thick and slow. Can’t remember the last time I actually saw a mower out there when I was playing.. Bunkers are not maintained at all with barely any sand and not raked. Greens are in terrible shape and are probably the worse part of the course. Most have large patches that should be considered ground under repair and a ton of unrepaired pitch marks. Combine the frequent bumps with no mowing/rolling and nearly every putt rolls incredibly slow.
No ranger either so usually pace of play is usually slow + no beverage cart even in the middle of summer
Only good aspects of this course are the layout and friendly staff. It is only worth playing on a hot deal < $50 with the expectation that you will encounter some very rough areas condition wise
Not bad but too $ for the value like most courses these days
First time playing here. Pins were in tough positions often on a hill or close to the fringe. There were a number of large holes/dirt mounds on some greens from burrowing bugs it looked like.
This was not the courses fault but nobody fixed their divots too. I tried to fix at least 2-3 per hole even if they weren't mine but too many left still. Somewhat tough course despite no water, number of bunkers surrounding the holes usually. Some tight fairways but overall not bad. Often the putting was the most challenging part. I'd say try to get a cheaper deal other than the weekend $75 with a cart price and try it out.
