It is fall, but the leaves were insane
2nd time I've played Reston this year. The first time the course was in pretty good shape. This time it was completely different, but I'll give it a few excuses. 1) the greens were really bad BUT they had just been aerated earlier in the week which didn't help. 2) the entire course was COVERED in leaves so I lost a TON of balls, even when I hit the fairway or just rolled off the green BUT I actually went off before the course was officially opened so I may have been any of the grounds keepers' efforts to blow the fairways and green areas.
Five groups on a par 4
I have played Reston many times and I knew the course conditions would be poor and was ok with that for half price green fee. We started on time. By hole 2 there were 4 groups on the hole. It never got better. On hole 4 the Marshall said he had sped up the group causing the delay. It just never improved. On the 10th hole there were 5 groups on the hole. I played 11 holes in 3 hours and 51 minutes. That is 21 minutes per hole. At that point I decided it wasn’t worth it. It would have been more than 6 hours for a round of golf and with Daylight Saving Time it would have been too dark to finish. Really not worth it considering pace of play but at least cheap enough I didn’t mind leaving.
What happened
Reston has never been that great of a course, but last weekend was by far the worst condition I’ve ever played. The greens were punched (which I knew about) but towards the back nine, it seemed that the greens keeper(s) didn’t know what they were doing. Also, I know it’s the fall season and leaves will be all over the course. But they only blew the leaves off the fairway and nothing towards the rough. It was very frustrating hitting the ball off the mark by a margin and end up losing it because of the leaves. Overall, paying $45 for the round seemed too high.
Seasonal issues to deal with
Couse was aerated last week, so the greens were not true. It has to be done, though, so I won't hold it against them. Oddly, after having little rain for the last 2 months, there were multiple areas on the course where it was a quagmire. Perhaps sprinkler maintenance? I love Reston National, and will be back.
Poorly managed golf course
There was. a teenager working as a starter and he had no clue what he was doing. He let many 3somes go while singles were waiting. Finally, there were too many so we were asked to play as a 5some! Go figure
Not bad for the money
The greens were recently aerated (sp?) so they were not in great shape. It would be nice if the staff could blow the leaves off the greens as they were pretty much a mess. Otherwise, the tee boxes and fairways were surprisingly good for this time of year (Nov 1). Come prepared with bright colored balls as anything that isn't down the middle of the fairway is difficult to find among all the leaves that have fallen.
Goat Ranch
Reston National continues to struggle. Until a solid owner takes over and runs this course properly it will continue to be a “Goat Ranch.”
• No rain in the region for 27 days and parts of the course were flooded
• Tee boxes were grassless
• Was told after I paid and heading to the range (that I also had to pay for) that the font nine was being aerated and had to play the back twice.
gone downhill
we used to play this a lot. Played it mid-Oct. Course was in pretty bad shape. We knew it wouldn't be great, but tons of areas needed work. It's been neglected for some time now. Not sure how they can charge as much as they do.
Deceptive Pricing
I booked this course for the rate advertised by TeeOff.com. However, I was charged additional $20+ as cart fee. If I had known this beforehand, I wouldn’t have played this course. Disappointed bigly.
Fairways airated!
Finally cut grass. Fairways were airated but playable. Person who checked me in was honest about course shape.
Horrible
Reston National should be ashamed of the condition of the course. Fairways are not good and they have not cut the rough so hard to find your ball. Where they did cut the rough they left heavy glass clippings. Again, horrible!
Riduculous Rough
The course layout was fine but the fairways were like rough and the rough was so overgrown that any ball not in the fairway wasn't almost impossible to find. We spent more time looking for our balls than playing.
No mowing
Rough was 10” thick, fairways were as long as the rough. Seems as though they haven’t mowed in 3 weeks. Normally a great course and great conditions. But to pay full price for a course where you lose your ball in the rough on almost every hole is silly.
Course condition
Feel like the grass has not been mowed for a few weeks - fairways are like rough in other courses, the grass on the rough are so tall that they all fall down side way (almost impossible to chip). We have trouble finding balls in the fairway let alone in the rough. We lost so many balls, and spent significant time looking for our balls. This slowed down the pace. Terrible conditions!
Very Disappointed
I live in the local area and I’ve played this course numerous times over the past 15 years. It always was one of my favorites in the area. Before I even got to the pro shop to check in, I heard people complaining about the conditions and they were all correct. This was the WORST I had ever seen not only at Reston but at any course I had ever played. You could not even tell the fairways from the rough. In some cases the roughs were 8-10 inches long. Even if you hit your ball in the middle of the fairway, you had to look for it because the grass was so long. Management should all be fired for allowing conditions like this to exist. I won’t be back anytime soon!
Worse Course in DMV
This is by far one of the WORST courses in the DMV area. I have played here twice and have NEVER made it past the 14th hole because of the incredibly slow pace of play. 2.5+ hours for 7 holes is ridiculous! I called the club house to inquire if there was a ranger and the answer was "no". Club house folks didn't really seem to care since they already had your green fee...which is 30-40% higher than what it really should be. The course is not challenging and it is in very fair shape at best. You are better off at another course that is prettier, properly maintained and managed and fosters an efficient pace of play
Awful course condition
Fairways were worse than rough! Grass had not been cut in most areas and on few holes that they had cut the farways's grass, they didn't bother to collect the moved grass! Couldn't find ball even on the Fairways on many holes! They charge $40 just for the cart ($20 per person). I played there 2 weeks ago there for the first time and course condition was average, so I figured this time it will be better, but it was much worse. Not going there anytime soon...
